Like a fine wine

My name is Dave and I like to party. Two years ago I was on the hunt for an S2000 to buy for secondary/play car. I had a budget in mind, but that didn't allow for many modifications for a clean, lower mileage car. A friend suggested that I should look at Miatas. And to be honest, I always thought of them as a gay hairdresser car. Hey, If you don't know you don't know. So, I stumbled upon this website, and was absolutely hooked at the potential of the car and the wealth of knowledge that contributed to this site.

I knew the car to buy would be a 94+ with the 1.8 and upgrades that comes with it. I looked on and off for awhile only to be let down with rusty cars with high mileage (Pennsylvania). Last year in April I did end up buying a nice project car. Two older gentleman owned the car before me and ironically enough, the 86 year old I bought it from fermented his own wine. This will be my first car to turbocharge and expand my knowledge.

First day I picked up the car, style bar and all (it's gone now don't worry).

Even though this car has low miles it wasn't exactly maintained like it should have been. So RS4s and new brakes all around to start.

Since I'm a bit of a detail guy who admires nice paint, the next project was correcting the paint.

I picked up a tombstone from a 97 on ebay and integrated the aftermarket tweeters into the oem ones. The Bluetooth is really nice I have to say.

I was itching to lower the car and stiffen up the steering, and this place led me in the right direction with the DIY Billies. So I made a shopping list and assembled the coilovers.

I went with new NB Billies from TireRack and 450F 300R spring rates, ISC top hat F&R, and accessories from Summit Racing. I used 949s Racings dual duty alignment specs after I put the car back together.
I'm pretty happy with this set up so far for mostly a street car, although over train tracks it sound like the car is going to explode. I'm just guessing that's most Miatas though.

HeavyD 07-05-2018 09:24 PM

I picked up a oil pressure sender and gauge from miatamecca via eBay and followed Sixshooters write up.

In anticipation for boost I wanted this car to run cool with the a/c cranking. Supermiata was the one stop shop. The install wasn't too bad, as I took my time. Removing the front PPF bolts, and jacking up the trans gave some more clearance. I don't think this was mentioned in the instructions as I read about it on the reroute thread. Also, I think the part about cutting the fan shroud by the water neck was left out as well. I put the whole thing back in the car only to take it back out since the hose wouldn't attach the inlet neck. It does look nice though I have to say. My temps stay right around 185-205ish with the 195 deg included thermostat.

Next up I bought a BNIB clutch from the classifieds (FM1). This was my first clutch job and it honestly wasn't too bad. The second time was even easier. Wait what? Yeah I thought I installed the new rear main seal good, but nooo. I started to notice some oil from the trans weep hole shortly after the first attempt. I ponied up and bought the FM rear main install tool this time. So anyone that's never replaced a clutch or rear main buy, burrow, or rent that tool if you can. It's just not worth doing thing twice.

I did replace the master and slave cylinder as well as having the stock flywheel resurfaced.

Thanks man! Getting ready for boost! I just installed an MS3X so I'm just getting used to the whole process. Kinda overwhelming to an extent, but it's drivable after using autotune.

Thank you, this site is one of a kind, truly. I've looked through so many threads and builds over last few years. Still have a lot to learn with tuning and the turbo stuff, but I'll get there!

MS3 is intimidating at first but there are so many write ups for everything that you can find in a 15 second google search. Learn what each function does and things will start to click! Looks like you will have no issues

Well done. That car was an excellent find, and everything you've done since is great. Really like the attention to detail, e.g. tunnel shielding and exhaust wrap on the reroute hose to protect it from the EGR pipe. I'm looking forward to keeping up with this build.

Good eye! And thank you a little patience goes along ways.

curly 07-07-2018 08:54 AM

Nice work, I appreciate the attention to detail. I did recently have one of these small, 5/16" coolant hoses fail on a "low mileage, never raced" '94, you may consider replacing all of them. And possibly deleting EGR.

It's the one under the exhaust pipe, with the clamp on it:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2f5699fc48.jpg

That one from the back of the head goes to the oil cooler, then there's one that goes from the oil cooler to the throttle body, then from the throttle body to the stock thermostat housing, and from there to the mixing manifold.

That’s a good idea for sure. I will be deleting the EGR when I put the turbo stuff on. I could do it now but I don’t think the manifold plug I have will fit the stock manifold though, but I didn’t pull off the heat sheild to verify. I’ll be draining the coolant anyway for the turbo water lines so it would be a good time to do it.

curly 07-08-2018 08:47 AM

For the NAs, I think you can take the EGR pipe off, cut ~1" from the end of the tube, smash it in a vice, then weld it shut. Although I may be thinking of the NB design, so take the header heat shield off and verify that's possible.

HeavyD 07-11-2018 09:18 PM

Got those new new wheels, Beryllium. The funny thing is I paid like ~$85 for one of those BBS center caps last year after I lost one. I'm hoping to get them mounted this weekend at my friends place who has a mounting and balancing machine. Also, next update will include Brains MS3X setup and current configuration . I'm trying to hit boost this weekend or next!

So I installed my Brain built MS3X and have been driving around for about a week now. I downloaded the software and followed his instructions as well as buying the full version of Tunerstudio/MLV. I was pretty nervous but I just followed the steps, carefully reading each section several times. Loaded the base map and she fired right up! I used a harbor freight timing light (don't recommend) to make sure my timing was correct after the car warmed up. The only thing I had a drive ability problem with was when I would slow down to a stop or rev the engine, it would either stall or hit really low rpms. I searched and saw that messing with the CAN-bus/idle valve test mode and mechanically turning the idle screw, while the idle valve was closed, solved most peoples issues. I did this very thing and that solved my issue. I do get bad heat soak since my IAT is just underneath the air filter in the stock airbox, but that's just temporary.

Beautiful! Welcome to the forum. I haunted and lurked for 3 years before putting in an MS and boosting (and still did it all wrong with a supercharger on a 1.6, but hey, the process went perfect and smooth thanks to everything I learned here!).

I am super envious of your 95m though. If I had a bigger budget I would pick one up and do whst you are for a perfect daily, but Xida GS instead of bilstines. Otherwise, probably the same. This car is gonna rip.

Also, if you end up needing any help, I am just over in NJ.

I never did like it when there wasn't a 100% cell for anything with a correction. I like to set WUE, dead time, idle voltage correction, all with a 100% in there somewhere, usually thermostat temp + a few degrees or ~14.4 volts Cause I dunno about you, but if my car is hanging out around 13 volts, I have a charging problem.

With the turbo set up I ended up going with a pieced together FM2 kit that I either got used, on sale, or new from FM. I sourced the S15 spec R turbo from the zilvia forums, aka the GT2560r for a pretty good deal. I read all of the posts about boost creep, so I did hog out some of the turbo with my dremel and a cheap but effective set of carbide . I also used every fastener and thread locker to keep this together (stage 8, inconel studs, nord-lock washers, and resbond 907ts).

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0d359b396.jpeg

I took my time with the install as everything needed to be massaged into place. No plug and play here with p/s and a/c. The hardest part was fighting the a/c lines to make room for the hot side intercooler piping and the coolant return hose. Lots of careful bending and zip ties to make some room. I don't have a picture of the oil drain but I was glad I got away with drilling the pan using just my cordless DeWalt drill. For some reason I though the chuck would be too small.

Looks great! You'll thank me later for replacing all those baby hoses. Or maybe you won't, cause they'll just survive, rather than splitting open.

I will warn you however, I just finished (yesterday) replacing an engine on a naturally aspirated car that over heated when that rear PITA baby hose split. It is the one that goes beneath the EGR pipe, which I'd highly suggest you get rid of, especially since you have an aftermarket ECU that doesn't care.

Haha I'll get there! I started replacing the one and said F this it can wait a few more months, there's boost to build. It's tight back there and under the intake manifold. I did splurge on a though to help ease the pain, hate those hose clamps. EGR is dead, RIP.

Long time no post. Last year ended with having my exhaust made locally. It's made of 3" Vibrant SS, utilizes the MT approved big maggie muffler, and is v-band. I also recently added some of the Thermo Tec clamp on heat shields for the trans, gas tank, and rear diff. Probably overkill, but the were fairly inexpensive.

This spring I decided to replace the timing belt and water pump along with replacing the front main and cam seals. It was my first time doing a timing belt and it was a little frustrating at first to get the new belt on. Once I learned how to position everything it fell into place. I also added some Permatex 22071 to the water pump gaskets and a little black rtv to the outside of the seals. No leaks as of yet. :loser:

Wow awesome build thread. I love the part selection and work you've done... everything looks quality. One of the best na builds I have seen in a long time, simple but awesome + minimal exterior mods. Congrats on getting engaged, that last pic is great!

Awesome build on a beautiful car. My wife and I got engaged on a Miata club weekend trip, we left our wedding in my Miata and took our honeymoon in my Miata. 23 years, one son and 2 Miata later, we are still together. I wish you and your fiancé a long happy life together.

Thanks man I appreciate it! The knowledge I gained from this forum built this car so far. People have been at this for a long time and I trust their judgement through trials and tribulations. I’m still new to this but learning every step. Wedding is next month!

That is awesome sir! I hope to follow a similar path as well. Appreciate the kind words much obliged.

Decided to try some EBC tuning today in open loop. My day got cut short after doing a pull and hearing something dragging.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a94f8f1e0.jpeg

Remember to double check and torque important shit! I limped it home and torqued the rest down.

I was targeting around 10psi or 170kpa in the top cells. It still needs a lot of work especially with fuel, and finding the RPM sweet spot for keeping the wastegate shut as long as possible. Once I fine tune this I'll start messing with CL boost.

I've done that before. Sounds like 10 feet of chains being dragged behind your car.

As soon as I heard it I thought it was one of the heat shields I had just put on. When I peeked underneath I was pretty spooked to say the least. Luckily, the road I pulled off on had a slight drop off where the shoulder meets the road, and I was able to reach the bolt and hand tighten.

I think when I had to drop the trans for the second time I rushed to get it back together and just relied on my impact. The 4 remaining PPF bolts were roughly the same and nowhere near the factory torque specs...

Well I’ve been noticing some smoke and smelling it from the exhaust. It appears my chra was a little saturated looking so I started poking around. Didn’t look like my oil drain, unless some of the high temp rtv was blocking the drain. I also had some oil in my compressor side, but haven’t been getting any oil in my separator. So I took off my oil feed line and looked at the “restrictor”. I searched the forum and realized I should be running a lot smaller one than I had installed.

I basically assembled the parts that I got from FM. So I’m not sure why they supplied me with the one I’ve been using. I ordered a .035 restrictor from ATP. So I hope that clears things up.

I have to get a few things sorted out before MATG. One being my tune. I’ll most likely take it somewhere to get fine tuned. The other is the engine temp got pretty high today cruising at with the a/c on. Might have to mess with the fan settings or maybe look into upgrading them. The car seems to stay fine with no a/c though.

I did a thing today. I started my day off at Walfart for supplies. This was the end result after a few hours and a few beers.

Nothing fancy but it’s better than the gaping holes that were there before. I’ll take it for 5 bucks.

Also had a visitor stop by to oversee my work.

Thanks man, plugging away little by little

HeavyD 07-16-2019 09:06 PM

I installed some new fans last week from FM which is their stage 2 kit with shroud. Build all the things in stages! Right subie guys.. The install went pretty smoothly but the shroud did need some massaging to live with the Supermiata rad. I cut the plugs off the old fans so I can remove them easily next time around.

While I had the coolant drained I replaced the lower silicone rad hose at the block in hopes of eliminating a small irritating leak. I read a Revlimiter blog where he had success with this Tbolt. I think because of the angle and the hose being a tad on the large slide it’s prone to a leak more than any other location. I hate the smell of hot coolant.

I only took the car out for one drive but when the fan would kick on the temp would drop pretty quickly watching the makehersquirt dashboard. Still have some testing to do to she what this setup is capable off. If all goes well this should conclude the cooling mods - reroute, rad, fans and ghetto ducting!

I went to MATG for my first time and had a great time! The drive to and from was long, but Jcoupe and our buddy Zach made the drive bearable. There is a lot of driving to be had once we arrived, and the roads along with their condition made for enjoyable spirited runs that I hope I can revisit next year. Meet lots of MT guys such as Ben, Marcus, Cameron, Steve, Dan etc. that were full of car talk and knowledge. I was nervous about the whole trip but my car did fantastic and didn’t have any issues. Any ways here’s a few pics from the trip.
