looking for a "post your FI setup" thread & a "post your exhaust mani" thread.

.......If there are any? i searched a couple of things and didnt find anything.

Reason i ask is i just started acquiring parts for my turbo build and im reading up as much as i find. But im really surprised there isnt a "post your FI setup", seeing as how it would probably answer a lot of questions people have about certain setups and what else should go with it..

and as for the second one. im going to be making my own tubular exhaust mani, just not sure on the design yet. so i am looking for a thread where you can either post your exhaust mani, or if there is a thread that talks about the diff types of manis & how it can affect your turbo (faster spool, more efficiency, top or bottom mount, heat retention, weight, cost, etc. )

any help is appreciated.

thats the route i was thinking about doing my mani. im assuming its a decent design since its on more than one car on here.

does that manifold have a drawback that an equal length exhaust manifold wouldn't have?

blindboxx2334 10-04-2011 06:06 PM

im also looking for some info about nb1 heads. ive got a spare in my room and i want to know what its limits are as far as the stock head goes. i have no idea if i should leave the stock cams in it, or just go buy the MS one @ 949 and call it a day or if i should build it moar. i searched "nb head" and there werent more than 10 threads that came up.....

Cams are useless under 350rwhp, well useless as in the losses can be overcome by moar boost.

learning new stuff already! i had 350-400 hp in mind. so im glad to hear i dont have to shell out an arm and a leg for a set of tomei's (or whatever ppl use) for my build... since i'll already be broke. :giggle:

For most people here, the effects of an equal length manifold don't matter. What does matter is smooth flow into the turbo for each runner. That's why tubular manis generally spool faster than log manis. Equal length becomes more important for twins scroll setups, when the exhaust pulses are being utilized more effectively.

Is this your first manifold build?
I would suggest designing your manifold to fit whatever other components have already, such as ps and ac, while keeping the smoothest flowing design possible.

Also keep in mind that a bottom mount will give you much easier downpipe access but a topmount will give you an easier time bolting on the turbo. Personally I like bottom mounts better.

Thanks for the info! and yes it is, I was thinking about doing one just like in post three. Seems nice and simple, as well as really short, which im assuming would help with faster spool...

and my car currently has ac (not working) and ps. it will all get ripped out when i put new suspension on her, or if it doesnt happen then, it will when the built motor goes in it.

Seems nice and simple for sure, but I wouldn't imagine it's the easiest to fabricate. I know Wayne Curr copied it and said he wasn't too keen on doing it again. I'm sure Tim (original fabricator of that manifold) has a better welding machine than Wayne, but those long welds wreaked havoc on his manifold flange.

wittyworks 10-04-2011 10:53 PM

I have to agree with curly, it is not nearly as easy as it looks to make that manifold. On the short tubular manifolds its really hard to make a nice collector, because you have to combine the collector cuts into the bent pieces. I would definitely order extra weld-els in case you mess up and cut one wrong.

blindboxx2334 10-04-2011 10:58 PM

Seems a lot easier to me than a few of the jungle gym manifolds ive seen. I suppose its all in the order you weld it all up. And i didnt even think about warping the flange, Damn. It will have to get checked for straightness after its all welded up. It will be fun though. Im going to draw a cad model before i make it. Im a mechanical engineering student.

blindboxx2334 10-04-2011 10:59 PM

Witty. By "weld-els" do you man xtra tubing?

curly 10-04-2011 11:12 PM

No they're helpful little things like legos for manifolds.

http://www.google.com/search?q=weld+...w=1280&bih=681

You can see a couple unused units as well as some welded up examples.

Wayne's build went fine except for having to surface the shit out of the flange to get it to seal.

These are weld els, and a good place to buy them:

http://www.acestainless.com/butt-wel...-304l/l90-h4wn

Basically 90 degree pieces that you have to cut down to whatever you need.

Heres a link to a bunch of fab pics from tims site building that manifold:
http://www.absurdflow.com/standard.html

You are going to have some flange warpage no matter what, but it will be less with a thicker flange, and much less if you can bolt it down during welding. I use another piece of 1/2 inch stainless to bolt it to. You will need to find access to a large belt or disc sander to deck the flange after its completely welded.

wittyworks 10-04-2011 11:50 PM

Also, theres a couple pics in here, my build thread, of my manifold design which is also a short tubular design.

thank you for providing those links! very helpful. were those the weld-els that you used on your manifold? i really like your design as well too.

wittyworks 10-05-2011 12:34 PM

I used a few of each of the 1.5 inch schedule 40 both long radius and the short radius ones.

blindboxx2334 10-05-2011 12:43 PM

thanks for all your help. lotta good info in this thread. all of which i will keep in mind when i build my mani.

until then,
:yippee:
