This build is so glorious already!

ridethecliche 12-18-2016 05:06 PM

Woah!

rollie 12-20-2016 03:01 PM

After some thinking in relation to fabrication and runner length, I may scale the manifold back to make it easier to make and spool quicker. It may look cool in CAD, but after looking at where the turbo sits, you'll never see it :(

rollie 01-08-2017 04:06 PM

Picked up a hot glue gUn and threw this together after traveling for the past month. Should be able to finish up the collectors and find a place for the wastegate/s soon.

Got the manifold all tacked up. Mocked it up and I've gotta figure out something for the downpipe and where to mount the wastegate or wastegates.

this downpipe routing is going to be quite interesting....

rollie 01-13-2017 01:38 PM

Agreed, this is what I'm currently thinking. The orange is the wastegate which will come off of the turbine housing and the blue is the downpipe. Green is the muffler if I can space out the bottom of the fender without looking ridiculous.

Ryan_G 01-13-2017 01:41 PM

If you're going with this routing, take a look at OG racing's v8 car. They route the exhaust out of the fender in a very similar way.

rollie 01-13-2017 01:44 PM

Thanks! That's exactly what I'm looking for although I'm not interested in running it the length of the car unless I absolutely need to.

codrus 01-13-2017 03:03 PM

Coming to this thread late, but mounting an oil cooler with just the bottom holes isn't a good idea. The core doesn't offer that much support, and they have a tendency to turn into a banana and leak if you don't use all four mounting points. If nothing else, you'll want to cut some lengths of tube as spacers and run long bolts through both holes like this:

http://www.codrus.com/miata/fm2r/oil-cooler-mount1.jpg

--Ian

rollie 01-13-2017 03:25 PM

I may have to look into that, but I've had that oil cooler mounted in my front bumper with only the bottom holes for almost its entire life and had no issues. I haven't heard of that being an issue before, even Flyin Miata sells brackets that only mount to the bottom (assuming thats what you have in that picture) and they seem to be fine.

codrus 01-13-2017 05:14 PM

Those are FM brackets in the picture, yes. The first cooler I had mounted to them leaked after a few years, and when I asked a local race shop about it, they said "yeah, they give you four mounting points for a reason, you're supposed to use all of them". So the new one has the spacers. :)

rollie 01-13-2017 06:07 PM

Hard to argue with that, I'll see how this one holds up. It's already pretty beat up so if it fails I'll replace it with a better/bigger one. Thanks for the heads up!

Fireindc 01-14-2017 01:00 AM

Insane man. Love it.

18psi 01-14-2017 12:42 PM

With a fender outlet I don't see the point of a muffler in the fender lol
May as well let that turbine sing with open downpipe like the s2k boys do:D

rollie 01-16-2017 10:08 AM

Thanks guys! If I was only tracking this than I wouldn't be concerned with having a muffler but since I daily this and take it on 600+ mile road trips it might be a little nicer if its not deafening haha

rollie 01-17-2017 07:42 AM

Got most of the manifold welded up, still need to clean up the flanges, port them, and add the slip joint on the 4th runner. Also welded up the oil drain port on the front engine cover.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...57c9ebc7a9.png

rollie 02-14-2017 03:08 PM

I'm also in the process of designing the adapter from the s2000 driveshaft to the miata diff. Running through the analysis now for weight optimization. Currently at just under 4lbs in mild steel.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2a273f3f3f.png
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...90cd4ac917.png

aidandj 02-14-2017 03:09 PM

I wonder if an s2000 diff would fit in a miata msm carrier....then you could use a shortened s2k driveshaft and skip the adapter.

Bolt pattern is probably different.

rollie 02-14-2017 03:12 PM

Currently the driveshaft is 3" too short and the bolt patterns are vastly different as you can see. If I didn't have the OS Giken diff in the car currently, I'd probably try to swap in the s2k diff thats sitting on the floor although I'm not familiar with the msm carrier. Currently hoping to sell that though.

aidandj 02-14-2017 03:14 PM

The MSM and s2k diffs share guts. So MSM axles would fit in an S2k diff.

rollie 02-14-2017 03:21 PM

Ah, I see. In that case, that could've driven placement of the trans and motor via driveshaft length instead of just where I wanted the trans.

rollie 02-15-2017 12:53 PM

While I decide between the cost of making a new driveshaft vs. having that adapter machined I found time to finish the muffler and downpipe. I should be finishing the wastegate mounting this weekend and the intercooler mounting over the weekend.

I wonder how loud this will be inside the car. I wonder how loud it'd be if you simply used a metal substrate cat as an exhaust. Tighter form factor. Ok, maybe
not radially.

I want twin scroll so bad. I want honda motor so bad. I want lots of things so bad.

rollie 02-15-2017 03:39 PM

I can only imagine this being loud for the passenger soooooo not my problem haha hopefully I can make a lot of progress this weekend and move on to wiring so I can start this thing.

rollie 02-15-2017 08:23 PM

rollie 02-21-2017 10:09 PM

It's finally fucking fits!!! I was able to make a quick fixture at home to place the wastegate flange and fit up at work. I'll have this all welded up tomorrow and I can move on to the intercooler mounting since that came in.

It's been a while since my last post, but I'm back working on the car after stepping away to run my LeMon's/ChumpCar teams first race in April. Just made the beefiest LS coil mount you've ever seen to mount them under the dash. I also decided to redo all my MS wiring instead of splicing in the s2k shit so I bought new MS 10' harnesses. I recently scored a BOV for cheap and picked up and EBC solenoid. Trying to get this finished up here soon!

Just thought I'd give an update. I've had a bunch of issues reading in the cam and crank signals correctly with MS3x, but I think I finally figured it out after grinding some teeth off of the cam wheel. Intercooler pipes are done, they were super simple. The cadillac escalade radiator hose also came in clutch again for the upper hose. Just about ready to start it up. Also found some good stuff in the scrap bin for a front undertray/diffuser.

Will there be any pulse contamination with a single non-divorce waste gate?

rollie 07-17-2017 11:13 AM

Hopefully not, it is split all the way base of the plunger so its minimized if anything.

Resurrecting my own build thread becuase I'm finally working on it again. I've got some sync loss I'm trying to work through if any of you MS experts wanna take a look. RS4s will be mounted up tonight and hopefully it'll be driving around in a week or so.

rollie 08-13-2018 10:03 AM

Welp kids, it finally started up for the first time yesterday even if maybe on 3 cylinders. First drive at the end of the week?
