The Murdermiata

7 Attachment(s)
At the urging of Psyber, I've decided it is time to start a build thread. I bought my first Miata in 2008. It was a 1990 Miata with a ton of miles on it that I got for $1500. That car is the one that has transformed into the car I am driving today. I swapped the 1.6 out to a 1.8, added a MS1 and a turbo kit made by WittyWorks that I found on craigslist. I drove the car around like that for a couple of years making 223whp/182tq. It was a lot of fun, but I wanted ALL OF IT. I sent a spare 1.8 to get built, and while the motor was at the shop I found evidence that the chassis I was using had been rear ended pretty bad in the past. I decided I didn't want to waste any more time on that chassis and started looking for a new shell. I found a 1993 LE that was being parted and bought the shell and a lot of extra parts for $500. Here is the shell after being pressure washed the day I got it.

I got the motor back from the machine shop, and the work began.
Attachment 181398
When my friend and I finished putting the car together I took it to a shop for a tune and made 305whp/225tq.

Attachment 181400
It was a ton of fun, but I got an opportunity to purchase a full turbo kit using an EFR 6758 with only 80 miles on it for $2500. I got the kit, installed it, and started ironing out the issues I still had remaining from putting the car together originally.

I currently only have one issue left that I am trying to solve. When my car is idling and the fans kick on it will occasionally kill the car. I've messed with the fan settings a little bit to try to remedy this, but haven't been able to fully solve the problem. I am going to tinker with the idle settings today to see if I can get the car to stay alive. The car is scheduled for a new tune on Thursday, so if I can't figure it out, hopefully they can help.

As the car sits right now these are the basic modifications I have done. I'm sure I will forget some things:

Engine:
1.8 BP
-83.5mm JE 9:1 Pistons
-Supertech Valves and Springs
-Manley Rods
-ATI Damper
-BEGi Intake Manifold
-FM Fuel Rail

Whalecum! I think we follow each other on Instagram! Build is looking solid thus far. Have you had any issues so far with the Begi intake manifold?

alienmiata1 Apr 4, 2017 12:54 PM

I've had nothing but issues with it. I've sent it back to get fixed 2 times and when I originally received it the flange hadn't been machined for the injectors to fit. It's been a little ridiculous. They keep blaming it on my AWR mounts, but continue to fix it for free. I won't be purchasing anything from them again.

YAY!

psyber_0ptix Apr 4, 2017 01:48 PM

Did you have rail fitment issues with the ID1000 and the FM rail? Mine's tweaked a bit as though it couldn't compress all the way. Turns out I probably should have ordered the flowforce spacers.

I have the FM rail and ID1000s with zero fitment issues once I used the little plastic OEM rail spacers. The ID1000s have a spring spacer deal that compresses as pressure is placed on the rail.

Not the older ID1000's, the x's are the new hotness which you may have. Theres been a revision to those adapters, but back when I had first got these in 2013/14, these ev14's stood a bit taller and the FM rail has tighter clearances on the orings than the OEM fuel rail. I couldn't get away with the slight shift as easily with the new rail in place. It's on there now, So far no leaking, but I haven't played with bumping fuel pressure. I'll revisit it and probably change the injectors out altogether when I finish my new spare head and inspect the motor.

I have recent non-x ID1000s and they have the spring spacer (still longer than the new x injectors though).

I had to get longer bolts, and they didn't rest flush on the oem spacers. Maybe FM's batch of rails didn't drill the counterbore far enough. They replaced the original one I had on hand due to a defect that posed a safety risk.
Anyway, I'll stop cluttering the build thread.

OP: Let us know if you get the idle stuff sorted out. Looking forward to numbers!

No issues with rail fitment

psyber_0ptix Apr 4, 2017 02:23 PM

mfckr, I'll call FM

Nice PNW build. I'm down in portland and hopefully finishing up my 6758 setup also.

Has it seen a dyno?

alienmiata1 Apr 4, 2017 02:42 PM

Not with the EFR. That's coming Thursday. Hoping to see 350-400whp

aidandj Apr 4, 2017 02:44 PM

Nice. Good luck. Wouldn't mind seeing the car next time im up there.

alienmiata1 Apr 4, 2017 02:55 PM

Hit me up! Always down to meet miata people! I'm going to try to hit an AutoX down there this year, so I'll let you know if I bring the car your way

The FM fan kit you have can draw a lot of power. I would try to make em kick on independently. This is a sweet built. What BOV are you using?

Looks like a turbosmart kompact shorty dual port. I run the same. creates a cool helmholz whistle at about 0psi

alienmiata1 Apr 4, 2017 11:25 PM

I do have the kicking independently. I've tried bumping up my idle. It seems they just want to kill my car.

good eye Psyber, it is a turbosmart

aidandj Apr 4, 2017 11:26 PM

Are you increasing idle when the fans come on?

psyber_0ptix Apr 4, 2017 11:31 PM

Shit, my idle up duty is like 7%

Im running on bandaids apparently
