My Turbo NB Daily Driver

So after thinking about what I want out of my next project Miata and knowing that it will be another NA platform, I decided that I wanted a more enjoyable daily driver than my '91 Toyota Previa (aka The Space Egg). That thing is great for hauling parts or people, but not so much fun to drive. I love Miatas and have plenty of experience working on them, so it only made sense to get another one. I can enjoy the reliability of it and even though I'll have a Project Miata on the side, I won't miss out on the fun summer months of top down driving.

So here's my new daily driver, a 1999 Miata, bought from a local forum member. It did have an JR M45 s/c kit, but that was removed prior to me getting it. It's in great shape, has 114k miles, handles great, and will work perfectly for what I want out of a daily. I really wasn't looking for an NB as a daily (I tend to prefer an NA over an NB), but this one came along at the right time and is actually one of the few comfortable ones I've been in. I'm addicted to looking in the mirrors over the rear fenders and spoiler, same feeling as looking over the flares on my prior NA. Just something about the curves...

Current Mod List:

- Garage Vary Replica Front Bumper
- Garage Vary Eyelids
- Track Dog Racing Front Splitter
- KG Works Side Markers
- MazdaSpeed Miata Rear Spoiler
- MazdaSpeed Miata Rear Diffuser
- LED 3rd Brake Light
- Spoon Fuel Lid
- Bilstein PSS Coilover System
- Flyin' Miata Front and Rear Sway Bars and Adjustable End Links
- DBA Cross Drilled and Slotted Rotors
- EBC Green Stuff Brake Pads
- SS Brake Lines
- OBX Header, 2.5" Roadster Midpipe, and Cobalt Polished Stainless Steel Exhaust System
- Brainstorm Solo I Roll Bar
- Katskinz Covered NB Seats
- Innovate LC-1 WBo2
- Gauge cluster with NB2 white faces and KG Works Vintage Aviation Bezel
- VooDoo Smooth Piano Black Shift Knob

This past weekend I:

- Installed 15x7.5 +34 6ULs wrapped with 205/50/15 Nitto Neo Gens
- Swapped the tail lights for 01+ assemblies
- Installed my Nautilus Air Horn
- Installed a black soft top (didn't like the light tan top)
- Lowered the car

I'm going to tint the windows, install a stainless steel braided clutch line, a Cobalt 3-point shock tower brace, frame rail reinforcements, and a MazdaSpeed Miata pedal set. Maybe get an aftermarket steering wheel. Probably not much more than that though, just enough to assist in handling and durability.
I may have to pull the Brainstorm bar and install a more glass-window friendly rollbar. It didn't interfere with the tan cloth top with glass at all, but the vinyl top doesn't go down as easily.

So enough talking, onto the pictures.

Damn nice looking daily driver man

chriscar 03-15-2010 07:43 PM

Looks 100% better with the change of wheels and black soft top. So what was the reason for parting out your NA, too many mods & a little too hardcore?

C

dgmorr 03-15-2010 07:50 PM

Looks great. Funny how you say it's going to be your daily driver, you're only lying to yourself :firedevil

Nope, I loved my NA a lot and didn't want to sacrifice it, but I also wanted to completely pay off all my old debt from school and be in better shape financially immediately rather than over a longer term. Parting it took care of that. Cars come and go, but a stable life is very important to me.

lol For the immediate future it will be. The V8 NA project will start soon enough and demand enough of my time and money. I need one that's not going to require wrench time and funds. I have good self control.

Sparetire 03-15-2010 08:10 PM

Good for you. Awesome looking car.

NA6C-Guy 03-15-2010 08:43 PM

Bad ass!

flier129 03-15-2010 10:03 PM

Nice!

Jealousy consumes me, I'm now looking at black NBs for sell........ lol

Turbo_4 03-16-2010 01:37 PM

That looks amazing...man I wish I had another miata!

leatherface24 03-16-2010 04:22 PM

i sell my na and buy an NB. You sell your Na and buy an NB. Biter lol. jk lol car looks soooo badass.

gospeed81 03-16-2010 04:27 PM

That shit's ugly and I'm not jealous.

Rafa 03-16-2010 04:28 PM

Coño Eric. That car looks awesome! :bigtu:

Did you see the ebay LS1 and T56 trans link for $2000 in the other forum? (just some food for thought).

Again; that car looks beautiful!

RotorNutFD3S 03-16-2010 04:57 PM

Thanks for the compliments!

Haha! I had to look that up. Thanks! :)

I did and I want it. After driving this car so much lately, I wonder if I'd be happier with an NA daily and a V8 in this instead. Decisions decisions...

Stein 03-16-2010 05:01 PM

V8 the NB. I'm partial, though.

levnubhin 03-16-2010 09:23 PM

Buy an NA to daily drive, swap a V8 into the NB, sell the NA, profit.

I has those tires ;)

Looking nice.

RotorNutFD3S 03-17-2010 12:06 AM

They're great tires, I'm hoping they last a while.

I'm starting to think this is the best idea, except at the end, swap the '99 engine into the NA (just for the benefit of the head), turbo it, and have two really fun Miatas. lol

Mobius 03-17-2010 01:32 AM

That is a sweet ride. 6ULs are bomb.

Dang I like the GV front bumper from a cooling perspective ... I could swap them in an hour or so ... now just to find one. Wouldn't want to leave it on my car, don't think it would look right longterm since I have none of the side skirts etc. But for track cooling - sweetness.

ecko 03-17-2010 10:51 AM

that's way too fancy for a DD

LOL, What is fancy about a miata?

RotorNutFD3S 04-05-2010 12:21 AM

Friday Wonton Sean and I drove up to Panic Motorsports in SC to get the parts I needed to start my interior swap. Steve is a great guy to do business with and the drive was well worth it.

This is what we saw when we pulled up, so we knew we made it to the right place:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4002/...4b436710_b.jpg

To the project at hand, I wasn't satisfied with the tan interior and I don't enjoy leather in a convertible. I'm also not a big fan of chrome and wood accents on the interior. I already had black floormats and center console, so things were looking a little mismatched. Here's the before pictures:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4056/...3906b4bf_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/...cb5d137a_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4032/...8e423557_b.jpg

Today I picked up a set of MSM door panels to complete the swap, there's some modification required for the interior release handles and door locks, but nothing too hard to do. Here's the results:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2683/...784a002e_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4059/...0f54563f_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4003/...3212e70c_b.jpg

Notice in the before pictures you can see that there was a wood piece adhered to the OEM shifter surround. When I took that off there was hardened residue from the adhesive that wouldn't come off, even with a razor. So I sanded it smooth and wrapped it with some Neffy Wrap:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2775/...ec23b646_b.jpg

I also got the windows tinted (38 on the sides and 18 on the rear glass, nothing extreme) and installed my CF mirrors week before last:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4059/...a5b0409a_b.jpg

Figure for now I'll get an MSM pedal set, a Momo steering wheel, and the M2 HCHTDD roll bar I want (to replace the Brainstorm Solo I that's currently installed) and then start saving for the LS swap.

leatherface24 04-05-2010 10:36 AM

Nice choice of all black...youll never go back

Turbo_4 04-05-2010 04:19 PM

Have you thought about rapping the hvac with that fake carbon fiber?

hustler 04-05-2010 04:56 PM

Those bumpers are grotesque.

scandmx5 04-05-2010 06:16 PM

nice job Rip, I've yet to see the all black interior!
loving the NB

Yeah, for about 1 second. lol I really didn't want to go overboard with the stuff and most people haven't even noticed it until it was pointed out.

They're not for everyone it seems. I'm rocking it because it came with the car and I like it. I've actually been considering moving to the OEM 01+ bumper with an MSM lip and 01+ headlights, but that idea is secondary to the LS swap.

man! that was a fun swap! i never want to pull a dash again......

RotorNutFD3S 04-05-2010 11:55 PM

Then pray that you never have a heater core issue. ;) Oh, it all has to come back out when the swap begins, the transmission tunnel has to be widened.

WonTon 04-05-2010 11:59 PM

DAMNIT! you serious? well at least we will know what we are doing this time around, and wont have to re wire the dash....

Ill have no use for my front bumper so its yours when it comes off

Awesome! I can work with that. Want your headlights? lol

Heater core replacement does not require removal of the dash ;)

RotorNutFD3S 04-06-2010 01:28 PM

True enough if you cut the attached hardpipe during replacement.

RotorNutFD3S 04-15-2010 08:53 AM

Just some quick pics to show off the the mirrors and recent window tinting against the rest of the car. I installed my old Revlight and a recently acquired ScanGauge II, which is actually a neat little tool. I unexpectedly received a set of larger brakes so those will be going on ASAP.

Super clean! However, needs moar boost!

RotorNutFD3S 04-15-2010 08:04 PM

Or 4 more cylinders. ;) Which is what I'm planning on as long as I don't go buy a local FD. lol

Fireindc 04-15-2010 08:11 PM

Mmmmmmm lsx ftw.

Although lsx in an fd is my dream car.

hingstonwm 04-15-2010 08:12 PM

Nice choice to go with the all black interior. Looks worlds better in my opinion.

Sam Amporful 04-18-2010 11:48 PM

Im mad that im just now seeing this! Congrats dude, I need to meet up with you guys soon. Maybe summertime

RotorNutFD3S 04-19-2010 12:58 AM

Thanks! We'll be having some events this summer that should be worth driving up this way for. :)

I picked up a Ryobi 6" DA from Home Depot Friday afternoon, definitely worth the $25 I spent on it. Messed with it a little today and got most of the swirls and scratches out of the hood. If I had more time I would have done a more thorough job, and the rest of the car. But I remember why I haven't bought a black car in so long. lol

Yesterday Doppelgänger modified the plastic front bumper support so now there's barely a gap between the hood and the bumper, it improved the look a lot.

RotorNutFD3S 05-06-2011 02:20 PM

Haven't updated this in over a year, no boost (or V8) yet so it's largely uninteresting for this group. lol Going to stitch some updates together:

My previous plans changed a little bit, I got engaged to my g/f of almost 7 years now this past December, so we're shopping for a house, planning a wedding, and all that good stuff. The car has gotten some new toys but the LSx plans were put on hold. I decided that I'll keep this car as a reliable daily until after we get settled and then get something else for a daily/backup so then I can turn it into a toy.

Last July the stock radiator let go, so I snagged a great deal from someone on here on a used PWR:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4099/...4fc607d1_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4100/...cdf35dd5_b.jpg

In August, I got a Beatrush PPF Brace from a local friend:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/...58ec1221_b.jpg

Makes a noticeable difference, mostly on launches, and there's also a little more gear noise transmitted into the cabin, but that's ok by me.

I coordinated a group buy on some Hard Dog roll bars for our local Miata forum and ordered one for myself to replace the old rollbar:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4082/...052656aa_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4134/...92bd5e05_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4114/...88c95293_b.jpg

I invited everyone over to my house for a tech day/install meet because of our roll bar order and we installed 5 or 6 roll bars and got various projects done on other Miatas, not to mention just having a great time:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4074/...8ced1dc9_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/...bd874c3a_b.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4143/...daf1aa5e_b.jpg

Then in September I snagged a pair of the Morimoto Mini H1 Bi-xenon projectors to start a retrofit, like the setup being sold on another forum, but I like doing my own work:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4139/...773873a844.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/...86736d5a6c.jpg

In the meantime, the whine from this new coldside charger is much different than I expected, it did purr at idle though. Unfortunately power delivery was completely unchanged, so I uninstalled it.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4092/...5f5e9cee_z.jpg

We had a meet at R-Speed in October and I bought a set of I.L. Motorsport pedals:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4131/...3d5fb474_b.jpg

In December I got a black MSM rear view mirror:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5208/...4c1a3729_z.jpg

I also got a pair of MSM door sills. The stainless on the sills helps break up some of the solid black of the interior, I like them a lot better than I thought I would.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5083/...24ceef46_z.jpg

Over my Christmas vacation from work I finished the headlight retrofit:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5203/...437cd500_z.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5089/...c972a5fb_z.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5248/...25e2cb89_z.jpg

The HID bulbs were progressively getting bluer as I used them which I didn't like (I ordered 5000k and ended up with about 10000k, lol), so I pulled them (cheapy eBay kit) in favor for the Morimoto 4300 HIDs :

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5205/...a196a0b2_z.jpg
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5124/...398482cd_z.jpg

I was gifted a D-Technique center console kit in exchange for some work, very few of these in the US from what I've read. Makes the interior feel a lot more roomy and overall I enjoy it a lot. Now my elbow doesn't have to fight with the center console. I lost the mounting point for my ScanGaugeII, which I enjoy having, so I'm going to have to figure something out there.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5210/...956ba7d6_b.jpg

I've also been silently accumulating parts to turbo the car on an extreme budget, I've missed boost like crazy, and some good deals have come along:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5218/...cde969b9_z.jpg

So far I have:
- MSM manifold, turbo, and downpipe elbow (very low mileage parts)
- MSM water pump inlet
- MSM turbine brace
- Stock 99-00 "downpipe"
- Enthuza Turbo XR Lightweight from an MSM
- Walbro 190lph fuel pump
- Supra Green Top injectors
- FM Happy Meal w/ Level 1 Clutch Kit and 10.3lb flywheel (lightly used, about 3-4,000 miles)
- MSM engine mounts
- FM Silicone Intercooler Pipes

The MSM turbo assembly bolts up to the stock 99-00 downpipe as seen and lets me retain my existing exhaust and the XR bolts up to the midpipe normally as well. So from the downpipe back I'll have my RoadsterSport midpipe and the XR, all 2.5". I'm going to send the turbine housing to BEGi to get the wastegate ported to prevent boost issues.

Right now I only have a little over $500 total invested in the system, mostly due to receiving parts for working on other people's cars. At this point I need an 01-05 EGR pipe, intercooler, and something for engine management. Should be ready to install after that. I hate to say it but I'll probably go with a piggyback of some sort. Not going to be running a ton of boost on a turbo this small and I need to stay OBDII compliant, so a standalone isn't currently fitting the bill and no one has really gotten a parallel setup running consistently without a CEL that I know of. Myabe that will have changed when I'm ready to install this stuff. Regardless I won't have to fight with the ECU as badly as MSM owners do.

The goal is to make around the same power as the MSM owners do with intake, injector, exhaust, and intercooler upgrades. So I guess just a hair over 200rwhp, anything better is icing on the cake. Granted this won't be as powerful as my red NA was but it will be a ton more fun than n/a and will hold me over until I can put an LS in this car.

RotorNutFD3S 05-06-2011 02:26 PM

Snagged a great deal on a Daikei hub and a Momo wheel:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5179/...f10f5d4f_z.jpg

I finally got another 3-point brace. Had one of these on my NA and it made a noticeable difference, it did on this car too, completely eliminated the tiny bit of 60-mph shimmy that was present and made the steering tighter and more precise:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5145/...89e759b3_z.jpg

Just because I take pictures of just about every project I do or part I install, I was going to take a picture of the 3.9 TorSen I picked up, but I realized it was pretty dirty (not caked oil, just normal accumulated grime from life on the road), and everyone who knows me knows I'm OCD about installing clean parts. Out came the degreaser...

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5187/...58be3ebe_z.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5150/...8417191f_z.jpg

Much better!

So then I decided to slam my car...

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5002/...95c30d89_z.jpg

Just kidding, had to pick up the rear and with the help of a good friend we pulled my 4.3 TorSen and got my 3.9 TorSen installed, not much to show here, just the "old" vs. the "new":

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5270/...36ce0436_z.jpg

And a shot of the 3.9 carrier hanging in its new home:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5022/...00340d7f_z.jpg

Meanwhile, my friend's idea of helping was creating towers with sockets while the diff., PPF, ladder brace, and assorted other tools all fell on my face:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5185/...1159b2cb_z.jpg

I kid, he helped a lot and I'm lucky since I asked for help at the last minute. Definitely appreciated! We knocked the job out in just a little over 5 hours, had a few stubborn bolts and those pesky PPF pieces, but no major issues thankfully. We got done, took it for a test drive, and while I was enjoying the lower RPMs we heard a horrible rattle. Got it back home, turns out I left the trunk unlatched. Oh well, that's what you get for being tired sometimes.

I also finally got around to replacing the windshield, it had a crack in it that was starting to grow. New glass is awesome! It's almost as if the glass really isn't there.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5069/...3bafbcbd_z.jpg

I decided to trim a convertible boot I had to clear the rollbar, much cleaner look IMO:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5110/...0d190ae1_z.jpg

I got jealous of the Carbing tow hooks I put on a friend's NA Miata, plus some people kept asking why I hadn't deleted the "baby teeth" yet, so I got myself some hooks as well, although a less expensive option from RennenMetal. I have done business with him before and as always the customer service is top notch. For whatever reason the first shipment attempted never made it to me and the tracking information never updated from "shipped" so he immediately sent another set to me using a different shipping company. Don't get that level of service much anymore.

Anyway, onto the quick pictures:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5025/...4abbe909_z.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5065/...c8b23726_z.jpg

The rear hook is bent specifically to clear the MSM rear lip and does require drilling one hole for installation (easy though):

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5142/...0523c366_z.jpg

And that's where things are currently...

So almost 3 years since I've updated this. I've had the car for 4 years now and resisted the urge to seriously modify it. I've done some things here and there:
- Pieced together an 11" Wilwood BBK for a fraction of the retail price, doing this at the same time that the 11.75" kit came out helped a lot.
- Swapped around a few intake and exhaust setups
- Installed a BP5A intake cam
- Did a few interior/comfort mods (Eclipse vents, radio/speakers, RevLimiter gauges, etc.)
- Installed FM frame rails
- Removed the Bilstein PSS coilovers in favor of a Tein Flex 9/6kg setup

In late 2012 I was stopped in a right turn only lane and the driver in front of me decided to throw his truck in reverse to go straight instead. He ended up parking the back end of his truck on my hood. Claimed he couldn't see me but I could see his face clearly in two of his mirrors. Regardless, I ultimately ended up with enough money to get a full repair/repaint + a hardtop, so it all worked out.

After all that, I've mostly just driven it to and from work and whatnot. However, one evening not too long ago I was discussing V8 swaps with my wife and how I had basically written one off for a couple years when she surprised me and told me that I should just install a turbo for the meantime. I didn't give her a chance to change her mind.

I've pieced together quite a few "budget" kits and while I thought about going that route again, I realized this time I wanted new parts and didn't want to take the time to chase parts down, so I ordered a kit directly from FM. Since my car was used as a test mule by DIYAutoTune for the 99-00 MSPnP Gen2 I decided to get one of those as well. In the meantime I'm utilizing a Voodoo box and enjoying 8psi (don't kill me). It has its limits but it does work well for this power level and it plays well with the stock ECU so I can have boost and pass yearly OBDII emission checks. The MS is going in as soon as I have a chance to order larger injectors and have the time to properly tune it.

So over the course of two weekends, I pulled the engine/transmission, did the timing belt and seals, installed a lightly used FM Happy Meal, MSM engine mounts, and installed the turbo kit. The related project pictures follow.

After getting the engine out, the first order of business was removing the old exhaust manifold studs, a few put up a fight, but that didn't last long:

New vs. old (new from MiataRoadster):

New studs installed and torqued:

Started working on the timing belt and such, front of the engine was still a bit dirty:

So I cleaned it up, it helps seeing when something might be wrong. I also coated the cam gears:

New timing belt and seals installed and the covers reinstalled, along with new MSM engine mounts:

Cleaned up and coated the upper half of the subframe, it had some missing coating which had surface rusted, along with the entrance to the transmission tunnel. Can't always see it, but it's there:

Meanwhile I got the hotside parts ceramic coated, more so for long term aesthetics:

Installed the manifold:

And then hung the turbo:

Stage 8 & inconel hardware between the manifold and turbo and and Nord-Lock washers for the rest:

This is the FM coldside piping with their prototype Throttle Body Inlet Elbow. The IAT port and blow-off/bypass valve are all integrated into the silicone pipe. There's a short 3" coupler in between the lower pipe and elbow:

IAT port, will come in handy when the MS goes in:

Slightly used FM Happy Meal going in, starting with the 10.3 lb flywheel:

The rest of the clutch:

All buttoned up and ready to install in the engine bay:

Engine in the bay:

Hotside all buttoned up. I splurged for the FM hardlines with the kit and also got the Fab9 COP kit:

Everything installed along with an AutoEXE brace. This brace has the brake master cylinder stopper on it, which I had rewelded to the correct location for USDM cars and it makes a noticeable difference:

Also got my FM Shroud and SPAL fans installed, I also linked the trigger wires so no matter which fan is coming on both fans run:

Front bumper trimmed for the intercooler piping and installed, the Fab9 intercooler is black and hides very well in the mouth. It is more visible in person but still pretty well hidden:

One thing I definitely want to tackle is adding more shrouding so the heat exchangers are as efficient as possible. The car is in no danger of overheating in general daily driving or long drives or even Mitty parade laps, but I know it can be better.

All of this was done in time for The Mitty, so my car got to hang out at the FM tent with Whiskers, the Catfish kit car:

That's it for now. Heck of a long update, thanks for reading if you made it!

that's GREAT man, glad you boosted this one too

and if the doodoo box is just temporary I think we can all "look the other way" ;)

Fireindc 05-06-2014 05:29 PM

EPIC update, was not expecting that. I should reach through the monitor and slap you for the doodoo box, but it's clear a proper EMS is in the works so I'll let it slide.

Car looks fan fucking tastic!

lol Thanks guys! I'll consider myself properly chastised. Once the MS is in and set the Voodoo will only be in the car when the stock ECU is, so I can pass emissions and renew my tags.

I love the cut valve cover. And that Autoexe is just the cherry on top.
