Default My Rx7 Rally Car, 1.6L, MS2, etc.

Well, the story begins with my purchase of a 1982 Mazda Rx7, SCCA pro-rally car. At the time it had a 12a streetported engine, very well tuned Weber carb and many years of rally duty. This came to an end at a rallycross where a bolt back out and proceeded to fall into the engine.

Thus began my overzealous build to get the car on stage again. I may have gotten a bit out of hand, but she is getting there. As opposed to running another rotary engine, which is pricey, i opted for a 1.6 miata engine and transmisison that popped up on Craiglist locally for 1000. Came with an old Cartech turbo kit which ive since sold. I may turbo, but at this point, i have not met the requirements for rally america events to run a turbo car.

I am coming to the point where the car will start. I still need to finish some of the fueling, and wiring to get make that possible. I just ordered the IAT bung, Bip373 and the IAC mod for the megasquirt 2. Which i have had to modify from another Rx7 i used to own.

Lots of other bits so ill just bombard this area with pictures.

its 40mm inverted Bilsteins. The tubes are custom. Approx. 8" stroke, but limited by the ball joints to about 7". Im using FC suspension in the front of the car to boot.

seems like your running the FC front subframe as well. Any issues with the 1.8 clearance? I looked through your build and you have the engine sitting slightly higher than mine. Also, was it located with the rear stud from the FB subframe or located to center on the wheel well?

Yes, I was the guy that wrote the write-up 10 years ago or so. Since then the car has basically become a tube-chassis. I ended up aligning it so the wheels are centered in the fenders more or less.
The engine sits as low as it can leaving enough clearance above the steering rack (which is not much. I can barely get my finger in there.

I like to run the 1.8 as an option, granted the 1.6 popped up for a great price. But i was able to put the engine behind the steering rack so its about 3/4 to an 1" lower than it would be otherwise. That is primary since i have my subframe forward til, which worked well since the added caster makes the car pretty stable on dirt at high speeds

Well since I was planning to run a 4" exhaust behind the engine as well as the coolant re-route (kind of needed for 550-600hp), I couldn't move the engine too far back!

couple progress pics! Fuel lines are getting there, megasquirt is in the car, just need to run the TPS, IAT, and ignition outs. Have to weld a bung to the intake manifold for the IAT though. Coolant stuff is almost finished! Might start here soon!
