Could you make a shorter video. That one takes forever to load.

asmasm 03-23-2016 12:08 PM

I can't figure out how to edit the timeline in youtube videos anymore..

OneTwo 03-23-2016 12:50 PM

LED strip? Definitely more visible.

aidandj 03-23-2016 12:53 PM

Yep, they are pretty cheap at autozone. Make sure you get the white backing ones. The black backing ones suck.

asmasm 03-23-2016 01:08 PM

The white backing ones aren't listing on the autozone or manufacturer website but they had them in the store. These are weather sealed, bright, and almost the ideal length. The only downside is they use really crappy wiring. I wrapped it in a sleeve to protective from abrasion which I think would happen in about 5 minutes if it was rubbing on the chassis.

OneTwo 03-23-2016 01:15 PM

Good to know, I may have to snag a pair. Now if only my ballasts would ship.

asmasm 03-23-2016 01:19 PM

Did you go with 35w or 55w? I'm on 35w and it's plenty bright for me. Aidan is on 55w but I think he still has smoked lenses which would reduce the light output by about 30%.

OneTwo 03-23-2016 01:23 PM

35w mishimotos. I would have gone DDM if I knew they would be backordered for 2 weeks.

Just giving me more time to finish up my quick release bumper though!

Correct. Currently want to switch to clears.

I removed all the stuff under the dash, it came out to 13.62lb, which is less than I had hoped, but I don't use that stuff anyway:

Im going to do the bimmerworks/frost fighter windshield defrost.

Next up is seeing how much I can cut out of an na6 dashboard.

OneTwo 03-31-2016 12:31 PM

I am really looking forward to seeing you get this thing on the scales once your "done" trimming weight out. Likecat for documenting everything so well.

asmasm 03-31-2016 12:36 PM

I just got a set of scales off of ebay and did a quick weigh (haven't shimmed the floor yet so I'm not going to post the corner weights yet). After removing this stuff I am at 1987lb with 3/4 tank of gas. Once I get my VVT engine in I will be swapping from a stock header and flywheel to lighter parts, there should be another ~15lb there. I'm also swapping exhausts from this borla setup to an enthuza NA racer. I think the enthuza will actually be heavier slightly heavier but we will see. I still need to add a passenger seat and harnesses (figure 25-30lb).

I have long term plans that involve another ~80lb coming out of the car.

I just sliced out 2.75lb of firewall insulation. I left the portion by the pedals, I might try and get it later if I feel more motivated but it seems like a big pain in the ass for a half lb. Also, I have been cleaning my garage in preparation of having a welder:

I also have one of these in the mail:

Dash gutted. I still need to pin the carpet down and hook up/zip tie wire connectors:

I want new coils and wires for the 2001 engine- There is a big price difference between aftermarket and OEM coils. Are the aftermarket ones reliable or should I stick with OEM? I haven't seen a lot of feedback googling them. If aftermarket, preferred brand?

hi_im_sean 04-20-2016 11:14 AM

D585 brah. Want a bracket?

Too heavy for him.

asmasm 04-20-2016 07:01 PM

As I mentioned in chat- I don't want any more projects to get this engine running in the car.

hi_im_sean 04-20-2016 07:42 PM

To answer your question, in my experience, aftermarket coils suck. The only exception are some of the performance oriented coils that are more than oem in some cases.

I added high beams to my car. I also cut out the factory crash bar and replaced it with 1.5x0.065. Welding into the edge of 0.065 tube where it joins up with 22 gauge sheet metal was a good test of my welding skills.. My eastwood 135 settings chart is also way off and the first time I pulled the trigger it blew a hole straight into the 0.065 tube.

I am using these for high beams and have them mounted with some dual lock into the underside of the radiator support. Once I am satisfied with the positioning I will run two rivets into each of them:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1463853143

The crash bar replacement saves about 5.5lb and the headlight conversion with high beams is saving 13lb.

I also got my new clutch setup. Fidanza 1.6 FW, clutchnet rigid hub disc, ACT HD PP:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1463853143

Once I get the passenger seat and harnesses in, and install the lighter clutch parts, its looking like I will be down to 1950lb with a full tank of gas.

The next projects are Aerocatch latches for the hood (since I deleted the hood latch) and sealing up the radiator shrouds with some carbon/balsa panels.
