journey to the land of turbos

T3 garrett off a z31 turbo, swapped out exhust housing to a .48 ar 5 bolt
tacotaco manifold

Need to get oil feed, v band 5 bolt adapter, and mock up exhaust downpipe\exhuast.

Probably end up doing soem FMU if I can't figure out how to do fuel only on a megasquirt.

TurboTim Oct 6, 2010 07:23 PM

You need a bottom end before all those other things.

Techsalvager Oct 6, 2010 07:24 PM

haha nice one, just a mock up engine

thasac Oct 7, 2010 09:51 AM

has anyone put the MAF post turbo (blow through) ?

Every set up I've seen, including myself, has put it pre-turbo.

That isn't a MAF...

icantthink4155 Oct 7, 2010 10:06 AM

That is definitely a MAF housing.

That's an AFM.

Techsalvager Oct 7, 2010 10:59 AM

MAF\AFM are the same, they are metering the air flow though it. This one uses a flapper door and sees how much depending on how far open the door is, while the hot wire sees how much using a hot wire element that the air will cool off and it increases power to it to keep it warm iirc,

richyvrlimited Oct 7, 2010 11:04 AM

They're not the same though.

One measures Mass Air Flow (MAF).

The other is an Air Flow Meter. The former is considerably more accurate than the latter.

Kinda semantics tho.

Oha and I agree, it's definatly not a MAF, the OP has an AFM.

I know someone has his setup after turbo and it worked fine.

I based my findings and info on both them being MAF sensors from this book

http://www.amazon.com/Engine-Managem.../dp/1932494421

and this

More commonly referred to as a AFM. Have you forgotten about NAs already?!?

I think it still qualifies as a mass airflow meter though.

Edit: whoops, didn't refresh this soon enough.

Splitime Oct 7, 2010 11:15 AM

I thought everyone just threw those away when they bought a miata.

levnubhin Oct 7, 2010 11:33 AM

You guys are splitting ---- hairs.

if it were easy to just pop in a hot wire I would of

richyvrlimited Oct 7, 2010 11:56 AM

Not the same, quote from wikipedia, (yeah yeah I know but I'm on my iPhone).

"The vane (flap) type air flow meters (Bosch L-Jetronic and early Motronic EFI systems or Hitachi) actually measure air volume, whereas the later "hot wire" and "hot film" air mass meters measure speed of air flow."

Bassmachine Oct 7, 2010 06:15 PM

With the meter placed there he can run a atmo vented bov about 7' or so back from the meter with no problems. Don't see why back in the day when everyone was running FMUs didn't do this. W/e now MS is epic cheap and epic effective.

therieldeal Oct 7, 2010 07:10 PM

the vane airflow meters dont work right if you boost through them... the stock mazda vehicles which utilized them had the VAM before the turbo.

Techsalvager Oct 9, 2010 10:48 AM

fuck the MAF\AFM that shit ain't gonna fit like that, you gonna have to redo it son.
