Well the first step of project Miata is completed. My garage is cleaned and ready for a project car. I took everything out of my garage, acid washed it, and painted it with Rustoleum Epoxy. Thanks Kirean for the help!

Here is the car. It's a salvaged title 97 Miata I picked up cheap a year and a half ago to pull parts from. The plan is to get it on the track for under 3k and be competitive. I have a head/block, bought a tranny last week for 35, used Exedy clutch/pp for 40, etc. The big ticket items will be wheels/tires, hardtop/half cage/, seats/belts/wheel/quick hub, turbo? This thing is a straight roller. Hopefully its going to get a some what full restoration. It needs everything!

Me and Fidgitk built this today.

Well I finally got her home thanks to Randy, Adrian, and Snakekp. Spent most of the night organizing tools thanks to some people Fuc*ing up my chests with there projects. Got her up on jack stands, traded some parts off, and chipped bondo off with a chisel to humor Spoolin2bars. I've given her the name Fancy Pants!

Snakekp and I tore the rearend out so I can clean it up and install poly bushings.

http://inlinethumb38.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg

Spoolin2bars and I took the rear bumper off to look at some possible weight reduction.

Pile from about 1hr of undercoat scraping.

http://inlinethumb21.webshots.com/43...600x600Q85.jpg

Scraped underbody.

http://inlinethumb03.webshots.com/41...600x600Q85.jpg

Well I chipped at the bondo last night and it never stopped. So tonight after harbor freight closed I decided to wire wheel all the stuff off to get a good look at the damage. Thanks to Josh's Speed Shop I was able to barrow a grinder and wire wheel. I took the paint and bondo off until it was very thin. Does anybody do any body work, I need some BFH work done asap. Oh, and I'm playin around with pullin the fenders in hope of some 15x9's.

Worked on the undercoating some more today. Im about 1/3-1/2 done. I got tired of that so I pulled the front fenders off to paint under them and clean out the 15 year old trash. We started pulling off all the brakets/covers/etc that weren't needed for a track car.

I forgot to show the pic of all the crap we took off last night. It was like half a trash can full. This car has dropped serious weight since we started working on it. Maybe 100lbs?

http://inlinethumb52.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg

Did more scraping last week. Took off about 6lbs of that crap.

Drained the old gas.

http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/43...600x600Q85.jpg

Picked this up from Snakekp.

http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg

Torched the bushings out of the rear.

What strategy did you use to torch the bushings out? I've tried in the past and they didn't seam to loosen up at all?

Thanks

Tim

That very last pic posted has all the tools you need ;)

Haha, I figured as much.. but what is the strategy.. heat up.. flaming for how long? Then what? Just hammer on it.. what about the punches/etc.

Thanks

Tim

jacob300zx Oct 28, 2009 12:27 PM

Hold the torch on the outer casing until you hear this weird crackle and it starts oozing out of the bushing. Thats the bushing melting which makes melted bushing goo lube to knock the bushing out. Wear thick gloves!

I wish those fu*kin racelands would come in so I can get a spring measurment to order correct springs.

timg Oct 28, 2009 12:30 PM

Hmm.. I have attempted this, but possibly not for long enough I guess. How long does this typically take?

Thanks

Tim

jacob300zx Oct 28, 2009 12:38 PM

With that cheap torch about 4-5min each.

timg Oct 28, 2009 12:44 PM

Thanks, will give it a go and see what happens.

Now back to your regularly scheduled build thread!

Kudos to you, a lot of work going into this one. I can't say that I would have picked up a Miata in that state in the first place.

I got it for $1400 with a 99 motor and a torsen. I traded the 99 motor for 2 na 1.8's so I could have one to put in the car I had that blew a motor. Yanking the trans and getting those motors saved me about $1100 I would have spent. So now I had a $300 roller minus a trans which I got for $30 bucks. So you wouldn't have bought this car for $330 running with a torsen? I also sold off about $250 in parts I didn't need so I have about $80 in the car.

Nice project, the floor looks awesome too bad it's going to get ruined with your new project

lol nope! I have an allergic reaction to bodywork. Like I said, kudos to you, it's the joy of a project car. I would have spent a grand more for a clean shell.
