Redeagle's 1.6 NA BEGI-Shanghai build (Lot's of pictures)

Now seems to be a good time to start my build thread as car is running now after long winter (some pictures of how the car looks outside + how it looked under the hood)
All started late autumn last year when hyd. lifters started to really make some noise just before it was time to send car to winter sleep.
First plan was just to rebuild the engine, so I ordered all seals, bearings, lifters, rings etc and got them in December. Same time we took engine off and started to rip it apart.
Beginning of January I saw a ad for BEGI Shanghai kit here with separated gases dp at discounted price. Within a week it was mine and on the way oversea :)
As I use this car only from spring to autumn i plan to build it only during winter time and enjoy driving on summer as much as possible. Therefore the kit was perfect for me to start (low boost first and then eventually MS + other goodies one day:giggle:).
As english is not my primary I hope you'll excuse my small spelling errors etc.

Now it was time to put engine together and start with turbo install:

redeagle 04-06-2010 06:31 AM

After reading trough lot of post's here I bought some extra pieces:
Bipes ACU
Innovate LC-1
1.8 rear end
http://www.upload.ee/thumb/385304/P2060026.JPGhttp://www.upload.ee/thumb/385305/P2060027.JPG
Also 3 gauges (boost,AFR,oil temp)
http://www.upload.ee/thumb/500368/P3300073.JPGhttp://www.upload.ee/thumb/500370/P3300075.JPG
Currently doing run in for engine and taking easy on boost as well timing is set to 10 and bipes pulling 4 on Full AFM retart + 1 for each 50F + on rpm's 2-3600k to be on safe side.
What AFR i should looking for on full throttle over 4k rpm ?

gospeed81 04-06-2010 07:33 AM

Welcome!

Looks like an excellent start and awesome progress on your build.

Kudos for doing your homework, and your English is better than most people here that don't have an excuse...

dustinb 04-06-2010 10:20 AM

Looks great. Should be a lot of fun.

redeagle 04-06-2010 10:34 AM

Tnx gospeed81&dustinb

Did some test run's on full throttle ( go driver with stethoscope listening 4th cylinder + laptop connected to LC-1 for checking AFR) and I’m getting some detonation over 4k rpm + AFR shows 13,4-13,8. On part throttle AFR is 11,8-12,5
Checked again fuel pressures and on idle 35PSI, vacuum line disconnected 50PSI and when I squeeze line shut it shows 84PSI
I'll probably try to raise vacuum pressure to 55PSI and try again.
Any other thought’s what else to check?
Also i have set of Toyota 3SGE 315cc – Pink Top injectors laying around is there any change to use these with current setup?

sixshooter 04-06-2010 12:33 PM

At full throttle you should be at an AFR of 12,5 or lower. 13,4 is too high.

Edit:Мы не имеем никаких эстонцев. Мы имеем несколько русских. Я не говорю ни на одном языке, но я имею компьютер, который делает.

Приветствовать. Вы имеете хороший автомобиль.

redeagle 04-06-2010 03:31 PM

sixshooter, My russian is really bad so i don't even try to start with it ;)
Did additional test: turned vacuum pressure up to 60PSI and closed needle valve shut and did a run: still ~13,4 on full throttle over 4k. However no audible ping (maybe thanks to cold day: 34F only). Part throttle is still nice AFR. I need to extend the fuel gauge line to see fuel pressure under boost as i don't know what else to check currently :noob:

Nice work! Your car looks familiar. Does the wastegate work ok for you? I had to get a spacer from Begi to keep the wastegate from sticking.

redeagle 04-07-2010 03:13 AM

Indeed it looks similar to yours :)
Wastegate seems to be working nicely and holds 0,4bar=~5,8PSI boost, but I’ll double check it also just in case.
I have some questions as you had very similar setup: How was your AFR under boost before installing MS and what exact type of MS you got (MS1 or MS2 and standalone or with parallel harness). If standalone, how was the idle tune?

southernmx5 04-07-2010 10:30 PM

My AFRs with the fmu were ~11:1 to be safe and 8-10 btdc, but I only ran the fmu for a few weeks. I got an MS1 standalone from Braineack.

redeagle 04-16-2010 03:33 AM

Little update:
Changed alternator and need to replace battery as well and most important is that AFR is now safe after installing toyota 315cc.
Once injectors were in place, car started right away (AFR ~11 on idle).
Tuned a bit using idle mixture screw on AFM and got idle AFR back to ~14.7 (idle is like it was before :) )
Now under boost AFR is ~10.8-11.1 ( need more tune on airfield as on road it's bit difficult). Also capped BKR7E-11 plugs to 0.8mm instead 1.1mm

190LPH pump is on order.

redeagle 05-10-2010 02:43 AM

Car still too rich under boost so while i'm waiting to get 1.8 injectors had a free saturday and installed intercooler.
Got manual boost controller, but didn't got proper vacuum line so hopefully will get this installed today together with oil change.
Also moved licence plate up and installed grille + radiator slam plate to push bit more air trough radiator.

Finally got the MBC installed and now boost set to 7PSI and run's great with AFR 11.8 at full throttle.
Still need to find new fuel pump asap as current one drops pressure under high load with 5th gear and full throttle. Base timing is currently set to 12 and Bipes pulling 8 (no pinging this way). IC seems to be working nice (Bipes shows 60F under normal driving and max 100F after doing pulls.
To-Do list:
*1.8 injectors together with new fuel pump to get better MPG (Toyota 315cc are bit overkill for idle and cruise)
*Additional cooling fan
*bypass
*new better quality gauges for boost and oil temp as can't see current ones very well + they are cheap and rubbish.
Attached small pic from last week's mazdas meet/show at local dealership + clip from tv show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVESK6RPi-c + more pictures http://nagi.ee/photos/Hiir/sets/264723/
MX-5 is not very common car here :)

New year, new plans :)

First got DIYPNP + IAT + EBC. Allready put together and waiting to go on car.
1.8 flywheel (lightened by 1.3kg and balanced etc) + FM Level 1 clutch. Clutch will be installed with maximum clamp load ~700kg using special tool.
Also planned some minor changes for IC piping, new airfilter, BOV, bigger injectors,VTPS,bigger brakes for front etc.
Car currently standing and waiting snow to melt :)

hornetball 03-08-2011 10:09 AM

Looks good! You're going to like Megasquirt. You should plan on re-installing those 315cc injectors.

sixshooter 03-08-2011 10:26 AM

The DIYPNP will be a nice addition to your car and the clutch is probably already needed at your power level. If you switch to the 1.8 brakes and you want a good aggressive brake pad for the street, I like the Hawk HP+ brake pads.

Too much snow!

redeagle 03-08-2011 10:53 AM

hornetball I never got to point taking 315cc out, but as i'm looking bit more power i'm trying to get my hands on RX7 injectors locally.
Thank's for the pad tip sixshooter, i'll go with original pad's first as they were very good package deal together with rotors, but i definately like to upgrade for better pad's (currently EBC Red stuff is installed).
Snow has been horrible this year ~1m+ in total and several building roofs have collapsed + lot of roads were closed for days-weeks.
Luckily i'm spending this winter in Spain and building MX-5 over the internet :giggle:

redeagle 03-11-2011 05:10 AM

Got a set of RX7 NA 460cc injectors and MS got ready (i know most of you have seen it, but it looks cool for me so here goes)
