Rex Raser's BEGi S4 for the track build

Well guys I have been reading and gathering my parts for a while now so it is time to get started. My build started with a VJ11 and a home made manifold (both now for sale) but while gathering parts I was side tracked by Bell selling a used M.O.A.B. So in January I stopped to see the Bell shop and talked to Corky about the M.O.A.B and was convinced no to buy it! Instead it was going to be some of his parts and my VJ11. Unfortunately on the next day I totaled out my Miata. So insurance stepped in and poured money into that hole in my garage no longer filled with a Miata. Then luck found me another 96 this time with over 110K less miles on it for almost no money at all leaving me enough money for the BEGi S4 kit.

Pictures will follow shortly!

Any guy’s running the S4 with install pointers or hints? I have taken care of the coolant system modifications so far and I am in the process of removing the exhaust once that is completed I am routing the oil and coolant to the distribution block. I understand that the whole manifold, turbo, downpipe will be the worst of it but with my lift at least I will not be on my back under the car.

Running underboost now 12psi

Well last few weeks have been pretty busy with work and life just kept getting in the way of my build but Yesterday I finally got the car out on the road.

So far I am running 12psi and as I keep leaning out the tune things are getting faster and faster.

I will post my MSQ and the last log I used to build. I started out with a bit of a miss that I have cleared up by tightening up my plug gaps they are now down to .030.

I need need to start cleaning things up from the install and get the heat shields installed.

I have a few very unpleasant vibrations but I have nothing even close to rubbing. I am currently running a FM butterfly brace with the center section removed but I hope to get that back on the car in a couple of days.

Will post a few pictures of my poor install skills later.

Ignore the temporary intake please. Secure and insulate everything you can so it doesn't move an inch or melt while on the track. I've had my fair share of things melting/moving when they shouldn't. Nice looking setup though.

Well over the last few days I have finished my wiring, zeroed out the preload on my sway bars, and softened the rear bar. All to get ready to play on the track Friday in prep for some time at H2R on the 8th or 9th depending on who I am going to run with.

On Friday I get my oil cooler so that whould take care of most of my cooling issues for the track. I am also thinking about a second heat exchange location depending on my results with it.

Does anyone have a part number for a oil drain plug that is tapped for a temp sender?

Today it will be geat shields and radio installs

enjoy breaking that off, and subsequently blowing up the motor and frying the turbo.

Eraser-X 04-30-2009 12:01 PM

Any off track expirance in my car that could break off that sensor would have broken enough other stuff to end my day way before I loose all my oil. I used to use a drain plug sensor on 1st and 2nd gen water cooled VWs that I ralleyed and never broke one of those off, I had destroyed a few oil pans on those cars while on gravel too.

Unless I have an unsed port on my thermostat for the oil cooler I really do not have a lot of other choices.

Just drill am tap it, it's what I did. Never been off track, but it seems pretty protected there. It's certainly not the lowest part of the car. I think you'd have to bent subframe to knock of off.

I'm not gonna tap the drain bolt for the reason Hustler mentioned. Still considering mounting options as well.

What cooler did you end up using? I saw some cheap one on silicon intakes or an eBay nastycar item was my thought.

I wonder what FM and BEGI recommends.

The Evo trackday on the 8th got filled, I'm on the waiting list and I guess we'll see about the miata 1/2 day.

Some say tubular manifolds and track time does not compute...

BTW, does BEGI supply that blue VC filter?

Eraser-X 04-30-2009 03:16 PM

No the Blue filter is all me BEGi is making a new compressor inlet pipe for me with a port for the vent I capped with the filter. The tubular manifold have a support to take a lot of the load off and it flows a ton better then the cast ones do. Plus there is a 2 year warrenty on it so we will see.

Today I got the heat sheilds on and it looks like my AC compressor took a dump so I may be doing without for a little while. Maybe it will convince me to just do without it and pull it.

more pics to come

more tuning added a little spark this time

So I have the fuel pretty much good till I get to a dyno and started on spark today.

Original spark table

http://www.bcwolff.com/cars/Miata/1st_spark_table.jpg

The current table after a little playing tonight I still think I have more to go but I will wait on my turn on the dyno to finish it off.

My next issue is going to be a big one and I hope that installing an oil cooler will go a long way toward fixing it. After just a few big 4th and 5th gear pulls I see my temps climbing and holding hot for way too long to not be oil temp related.

Any know how much the BEGi scooper actually helps with helps with temps at speed?

Miatamaniac92 05-01-2009 01:18 AM

What kinda temps are you showing?

Posting 1.5-2mb photos on a forum is stupid.

Two more pictures for Tim

Thank you Tim for your input I will keep that in mind. If Tim or anyone else would prefer not to deal with the large pictures I embed in my build thread or pictures from anyone else please just edit your hosts file to link the domain to a different IP address an entry like

127.0.0.1 bcwolff.com

will work just fine at blocking my pictures.

Miatamaniac92 I was getting to 210 just doing a few pulls on 183 last night and it took about 10 minutes to get back under 200 again. I am currently running a 180 thermostat with a 160 sitting on the shelf.

I had to modify the the radiator cover this morning to get it to fit so I will see how much that can help with my cooling today.

I want to play, soon.

I think you need to relax on that spark table.

be safe, it would be dumb to pop the motor before making det-cans.

Large images are cool, when they are hosted off a proper connection. Dammit, these images hosted off bcwolff.com is slow even from our 100Mbit/s fiber connection at the office! :loser:
