I will be checking the bearings. Then I will be replacing them even if they look good. I don't know how long it was like that so I want to be on the safe side.

The first thing I did today was drain the oil I have a magnetic oil drain plug and when I looked at it I did not see any metal shavings at all. I take that as a very good sign that not to much damage has been done. I then removed just about everything off the front of the engine and some of the stuff around the trans. Tomorrow morning I will pull the drive shaft, drain the transmission, unbolt slave, disconnect starter and alternator and I should be good to pull the motor. Hopefully I have it off and on a stand tomorrow. Not sure though how far I will start taking apart the motor tomorrow or not. We will see what time it is when I get done with all the other things and how much energy I have.

Yes your cam loaves can get nice and crusty and they are very tasty with olive oil, salt, and rosemary.




If your bearings are hurt, you may not see shavings. Worn bearings can look like ultra ultra fine sand, and will easily suspend in the oil. Copper happy golden bullshiz of tears. Pour your oil into a baking pan or something and let it sit. Then, gently pour the oil out of the pan. If your bearings have left detritus, then you will see it at the bottom of the pan.

There is a reason why I know this.

Also, if you forget to disconnect the slave, don't worry. It will disconnect itself.

I did not see any metal flakes anywhere and I was looking. Bearings will be replaced no matter what. I am currently looking for a honing tool that fits the miata engine. I might pull pistons and give the bore a quick hone then put the pistons back in with the new bearings.

I also know I need to check valve clearance.

My BE race oil pump came in today. All the other parts arrived yesterday. I am about to go pick up an engine hoist from my friend. It is very possible that the motor comes out tonight. Then take apart everything on Friday and reassemble. Then drop motor in Saturday and hook everything back up.

If your motor had happy ring seal, why risk having crap ring seal after rehone/rering?

Seriously, it seems like 1/10 built motors has crappy ring seal.

I am on the its 100+ degrees out schedule and I get lazy. Actually I am still waiting on a hoist. My friend needed his back suddenly. I was planning on buying one today, but trucks not starting. So I need to borrow a friends car later this week to go pick up a hoist from HF.

God does not want me to pull this motor. I finally got up to HF today and they were out of hoists. They said to check back on Tuesday. So I am praying they get one in then and I can pick it up.

I think you are correct. Thunderstorms kept me from pulling motor today. Tomorrow my schedule is full and Friday most likely the same. Saturday morning I will be hopefully buying my Mazda 2. So if the weather is nice, Saturday afternoon the motor will be pulled.

Mazda2 is a common car and will be carried by many dealers. To make your life easy, you can call up the various dealers and tell them that you will pay them invoice pricing and buy it today. Whoever agrees, buy it from them. Assuming they have the trim/color etc that you want. Don't be afraid to pit one dealer against another. I did that and saved $2000. In general, they offer no value except for discount pricing.

BTW

for $15,000 you can get a NC. Or a super low mile Mazdaspeed Miata that you could do just a few reliability mods on and have a nice 200hp reliable daily miata. Ex GF had mazdaspeed miata. Car was so nice, even bone stock. And wow, you even have a broken racecar, a broken all weather vehicle, and a working stock miata like I do.
