The 2017 Season So Far

Summit Point Main 3/11-3/12

Rough event. First event with the cage and Xidas, along with a whole bunch of other changes. Temps were around 30F, so super uncomfortable. Had a brake master cylinder failure in the morning which left me in the gravel trap and ended my weekend early. Took 3rd in class, 7th overall on Saturday and a DNS on Sunday.

Summit Point Shenandoah 4/1-4/2
Took the WDCR SCCA instructor clinic on Satuday and got certified as an instructor! On Sunday I took 3rd in class, 5th overall while still trying to figure out my new setup. Super frustrating going slower than the year before. Had a good novice student who made lots of progress at his first track day ever, so that was rewarding.

NCCAR 6/10-6/11
One of my favorite non-competitive events, NCCAR is always good for testing car setup and driving fundamentals. Had 3 good students, 1 novice and 2 intermediates. Everybody learned a lot and good times were had. I smashed my previous personal best going clockwise on Saturday (1:39.46), but wasn't able to do the same counter-clockwise on Sunday. I think I need to pay more attention to fatigue and hydration when I've got 2 students and it's 90 degrees out.

Summit Point Shenandoah 7/15-7/16
Switched from my mainstay Maxxis RC1's to Hooser R7's to try and turn my season around. I was rewarded with 1st in class and 1st overall on Saturday, and 1st in class and 2nd overall on Sunday. The PAX for the overall championship was adjusted overnight, so I had a tougher road on Sunday. Set a new personal best on Shenandoah of 1:43.404. Had another good novice student both days.

Summit Point Shenandoah 8/26-8/27
Our last event at Shenandoah this year, it went well but not as well as I was hoping. Set new personal bests both days, but my main opponent in the overall championship pipped me both days so the points spread is getting rough. Took 1st in class both days, and a 4th overall on Saturday and a 3rd on Sunday. More good students, so a fun time in total. Got some coaching from a friend at the end of the day on Sunday, so I have some things to work on at this track.

Had a scary moment on Sunday morning when my steering wheel quick release adapter decided to unscrew itself from the steering shaft:

Looks great! I've got a NA chassis in my garage I'm slowing building parts for a S2 build pending WRL actually doing something. I know they ran a SM Enduro at Barber a few weeks ago, so hopefully they aren't going that route. Maybe they'll run the classes together?

Cool! Always happy to see more and more east coast SPM interest. Hopefully we'll have something going soon enough!

I hope so too! I've emailed them about SPM, but haven't really gotten a response. I want to move to W2W either next season or the 2019, but if SPM doesn't become a thing I'll have to rethink my build for another class. Might be a situation where we need ~10 cars ready to go, coming to them and asking for a race?

Post-race maintenance and check over today, bled the brakes and washed the wheels, when I discovered this:

All 4 of my wheels have at least 1 crack :( These are 2nd gen 6UL's I bought in 2010, so well over their use limit but I was hoping to finish out the season. Placed an order for a set of 4th gen 6UL's in Beryllium from 949, and threw in a Wilwood proportioning valve while I was at it. The wife and I are leaving for Hawaii on Wednesday, and we don't get back until the day before our next event at Dominion Raceway. It will be tight!

Watching your video, a few things stand out.

1. Your Torsen needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Many wheelspins
2. Dat shuffle steer. Argh. Sit at least 2" closer to the wheel. Yes it will feel weird at first. Yes you will be faster.
3. You seem to be locking the rear brakes in some turns and over shooting your desired turn in. Maybe that's a long pedal making iy hard to heel toe, maybe it's just your driving. I bend my throttle pedal towards the brake and also bend the lower half of the pedal towards the driver.
Takes some creative leverage with block of wood to do this. Maybe you have an odd pad combination or no prop valve, dunno.

Overall, cars looks fast and well set up. Nice driving.

Thanks for the feedback, the shuffle steering is definitely something I need to work on. I've ordered a 2.5" spacer for my steering wheel, hopefully that helps me retrain myself. I'm on the lookout for a new Torsen, just haven't found one locally. I think the braking issue is partly equipment, a little technique. I've got stock 1.8 non-Sport calipers with the stock NB2 booster and master cylinder, so the worst combination for pedal feel possible I think. I'll be putting in a prop valve shortly.

Dominion Raceway 9/16-9/17/2017
One of my least favorite tracks, but we had a 2 day race so I cut short my Hawaiian vacation to be back in time. Got my Hoosiers moved to my new Beryllium 6UL's:

Also installed the Miatacage 2.5" steering wheel spacer ($90 jesus ******* christ) to work on my shuffle steer. I adapted pretty quickly to the new driving position and stopped my shuffle steer for the most part, not sure if it's made me faster since this is a relatively new track to me, but hopefully I'll see dividends in the future.

There was low attendance at this event because nobody likes this track and our club sucks at marketing. I took 3rd place overall both days, which was lower than what I needed as my main rival in the overall championship missed this event to prepare for the SCCA Runoffs. The gap is down to 14 points, with 1 race weekend left in the season. I did beat my rival for our class championship, which should put that firmly within my grasp.

I couldn't get the lap time down to where I was hoping for, best of a 1:39.601 which is about 4-5 seconds slower than the NASA PTE and SM records that were set earlier this year. My car seems to be horrifically underpowered, you can see in the video how bad I get gapped by my friends similarly prepped NC, which I am dead-even or faster than at most other tracks.

Worked on the car for a few hours today, in preparation for our season finale next weekend. Put on a set of takeoff Hoosiers since I corded 3 of them last event, and did some stuff with the brakes.

Put on a new set of PFC 11's from OGracing, this set lasted 12 days on track, so not bad. The taper wear sucks, I think these calipers are due for a rebuild or replacement. All the piston seals are pretty deteriorated.

Installed my proportioning valve from 949racing, now I have another setup rabbit hole to make the car slower with!

Summit Point Jefferson - 10/21-10/22/2017
Season finale for our time trial series, on one of my favorite tracks. Takeoff Hoosiers were hard as hell the first day and took almost 4 sessions before they felt like Hoosiers again. My worn out Torsen reared it's head bad at this track, as you can see in the picture above. I was short-shifting to 4th and 5th all over the place to keep the revs down and limit wheelspin. Set new personal bests each day, which was enough to clinch my class championship, and take 2nd in the overall championship.

My exhaust decided to explode sometime on Saturday, so I took it off and ran an open exhaust for the rest of the weekend, much to the chagrin of literally everyone at the track.

Last October I decided to get one last track day in at NCCAR... and it lasted 3 laps. Brakes went super-soft so I pulled it in and found I could barely turn the right front wheel.

Looks like we're missing something...

Ball bearings work better when they're *****.

The bearing retainer melted into this sludge.

These hubs were repacked and blueprinted OEM Mazda hubs from Treasure Coast Miata, 2 seasons old. I probably should have repacked them over the winter, lesson learned! I grabbed a Moog hub off Amazon and repacked it with Amsoil Dominator grease with helpful instructions from bellwilliam's video. I'll be repacking the other hub shortly.

Dropped my useless LSD, turns out I have a Tochigi Fuji Super LSD. I didn't really know what I was doing when I put this in like 7+ years ago.

Grabbed this 4.3 Torsen I off ebay and put that in my old carrier. After the sealant cures tomorrow I'll put it back in.

Season starts in only 8 weeks!

Your clutches probably blew up, it's pretty common on those Fuji LSDs.

Your driving looks much better with the steering wheel spacer. If you watch your previous video, you're only able to steer ~80* before shuffling. With the spacer I saw closer to 120* before shuffling. I really need to tackle this myself, as my legs prefer to sit further back than my arms should be.

Also I wouldn't bother rebuilding your calipers. Upgrade to a Stoptech kit, it'll eliminate the taper, and open you up to better piston and master cylinder combos.

Glad I came across this thread. I'm just starting to get back into getting on track after a ~7-8 year hiatus from TT. My Miata is currently completely stock as I am waiting to see the future of NASA TT6/PT6 or to see if SPM will have a strong showing on the East Coast, so it's cool to see some interest in SPM in the area. I'm way behind you in both car and driver prep, but I'm looking forward to following along with this thread.

Thanks, I think the spacer was a big help. With SPM coming to the east coast, I want to keep it S2 legal so the stock calipers have to stay. Is it worth it to rebuild them, or should I just get Autozone/Rock Auto rebuilds?

I am, and planning on doing the Mid Ohio race. Also looking at putting together an enduro team for the WRL race, since I'm there.

Thanks! You should build an S2, it should slot in pretty well to ST5/TT5. And if you make it up to Summit anytime, you should run our SCCA TT series. Good times!

That muffler failure is crazy. Is that a Magnaflow?
