Just got my car back from my painter last night. I'm in love with my car again. It's changed a lot since I got it from the used car lot in Germany, unregistered and uninsured.

Attachment 236987

Threw her in to the garage where I'll work on her this winter
Attachment 236988

reconnected the MS3 and fired her up confirming that everything worked so I could eliminate that as a point of error if starting up becomes a problem when the new engine goes in
Attachment 236989

Cut her up real good
Attachment 236990

Started unraveling the wiring and labeling everything. I'm simplifying the wiring and deleting all plugs and wires that are unused and going for a minor tuck. Now is the logical time to do it

Just got home from the US and started tinkering.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...97375079b7.jpg
2x raspberry pi 3 with touchscreens. One auto boots into tunerstudio on startup and will be placed in the sunvisor for logging and tinkering with the tune if needed.

The other one will be LTE/4g connected with a dedicated sound card connected to an amp through an RCA connector to run Spotify. Maybe GPS later on.

Power will be provided with a pair of these
https://mausberry-circuits.myshopify.com/collections/car-power-supply-switches/products/3a-car-supply-switch-1

constant 12v connection and a 12v switched. When the 12v switched is off the board will send a shutdown signal to the pi and keep power on for 30sec for safe shutdown.

Now I just gotta get it in the car as neatly as possible.

Got bored tonight and decided to put an hour towards some more progress
Attachment 236972

I'll most likely swap the positions of the gauges

Attachment 236973

Attachment 236974

I'll build a new frame at work tomorrow and then most likely upholster it in alcantara
Attachment 236975

Now one technical related question. I remember reading it a while ago and can't find the info again.
I have both a NB1 and a NB2 engine. I remember someone stating that the nb1 block + nb2 head + coolant reroute is the best combo for the most efficient cooling. right or wrong?

ridethecliche 12-03-2017 08:01 PM

I think you need to use the NB1 head gasket to do that. The NB2 head gasket only kinda solves the problem and the coolant reroute is okay with it but is overall better with the NB1 head gasket.... IIRC.

Looking forward to the cool tech progress!

Thanks for the quick reply.

And I'm excited too, can't wait to get to work tomorrow to make the sunvisor frame.

Anyone got some critique on my list before I pull the trigger?
And those wheels will definitely clear the brakes right?

sixshooter 12-30-2017 08:13 AM

Looks good.

G3ML1NGZ 01-12-2018 11:19 PM

Finally tore the engine out. Didn't find the shop hoist so I was forced to yank it out by hand.

Figured out that the PCV was literally just open and my rear main seal was leaking. That's where all my oil was going(notice the spot on the wall after I started it once inside? lol). Also noticed that my timing belt idler had worked itself loose and was kinda just held in place by luck and pixie dust. Yikes!

Now to get the block bored and assembled. Wheels, brakes and roll bar arriving next week
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...db7b8d3285.jpg

G3ML1NGZ 01-19-2018 03:02 PM

In the process of moving the fuse boxes into the cabin, will place them in an aluminum box where the airbag used to be. Just a part of cleaning up the engine bay

And today I got a package. I could barely work today I was so excited to get home and open my stuff

And we all know what 6UL's look like but I don't care. So purrrrdy

G3ML1NGZ 01-23-2018 07:25 PM

quick question. I did not like the look of the crank in my NB1 block. Is the nb2 crank interchangeable?

sixshooter 01-23-2018 10:20 PM

The only difference I know of is the thrust bearings

G3ML1NGZ 01-25-2018 03:21 PM

so just run the smaller thrust bearing that fits the nb1 block and good to go? (crazier yet. throw on the cap from the NB2 block and use a larger thrust washer with the NB2 crank.)

The reason I'm going through all this is that I asked a friend to mount the nb2 block on the engine stand bracket while I was doing something else and he used the wrong bolts and stripped the threads on the block

sonofthehill 01-25-2018 11:06 PM

Do not interchange caps, they are matched to the block.

G3ML1NGZ 02-08-2018 10:06 AM

The guys at the machine shop seem to enjoy this build and offered to cut for the valves for next to nothing while they have the head.
now all the valves I find seem to be ~.6mm longer. Does that mean I have to buy bigger shims for the lifters or run the stock ones since .6mm is such a tiny difference?

G3ML1NGZ 02-11-2018 06:01 PM

The weekend was productive. got a lot done and learned a lot.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...456373afc3.jpg

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ef915740f5.jpg

Spent a whole lot of time with a wire wheel and a dremel to clean the rust off the block
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...56dfefdb3c.jpg

But the final result is nice
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b6d18e4344.jpg

Now I just gotta wait for the head and powdercoated parts before finishing the engine.

But I gotta ask again. Since most oversize valves seem to be .6mm longer, do I have to buy other lifters or can I run the stock ones? kinda lost there. it's a VVT head if that matters.

sixshooter 02-11-2018 07:29 PM

You use the same lifters but must set the mechanical lash for proper clearance by changing shims. It's a pain in the ass.

G3ML1NGZ 03-03-2018 06:21 PM

The next time I claim to have had a great idea I'd appreciate a swift kick to the shins

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...fb90214edf.jpg

It was a royal pain in the ass but at least the engine bay will be cleaner

G3ML1NGZ 03-18-2018 08:43 PM

been making a decent amount or progress since I got the car up on the lift.

Motor is almost ready, just gotta adjust the valve lash since the valve seats got a light cut. Gotta figure out why my oil pan feels like it doesn't want to sit quite right.

G3ML1NGZ 03-25-2018 05:24 PM

well. I'll have a professional guy take a look at it after easter. depending on how that goes then yes, maybe.

G3ML1NGZ 03-26-2018 01:58 PM

I'll take the red NA. I hear those are rare

G3ML1NGZ 04-04-2018 08:10 PM

Alright, the subframe is out and I got a professional welder coming in the next couple of days to take care of the chassis rail.

While the subframe was out I couldn't resist lowering the car on top of the engine to mock up the electrical system and see how things would fit. Gotta say that seeing it in the car gave me a bit of a morale boost.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...24008e87d7.jpg

Seeing the turbo there gets me thinking. I'm not running power steering and don't have AC. Do I still need an idler pulley or can I get away with just running the alternator off the crank? Without an idler it seems that the best IC piping route would just to go inside of the chassis rail

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...37f5bdd53b.jpg

sonofthehill 04-05-2018 02:34 AM

I mean you're going to run a standard water pump right? Just an alternator/water pump belt is fine.

Wait, wut ?

More details please.

Was this some Icelandic superpower you invoked? Because I picked up my block, to put it into the car to go to the machine shop, and about got a massive hernia.

I realize this question is a bit late. Progress looks good! Boost is good!

He's an Icelandic powerlifter. I've met him. Huge shoulders. He's a mountain of a man. Lifting a Miata engine is probably nothing to him.

G3ML1NGZ 04-06-2018 03:28 PM

lol. thanks. I'm not gonna say it was easy, jacking up the tranny to take a bit of load off helped a lot.

But yeah, been lifting for 4years now and it comes in handy once in a while. But calling all 5'7 of me a "mountain" is a bit generous ;)

sixshooter 04-06-2018 06:01 PM

He's enormous. He's kidding about being 5'7". He's probably 6'7" and 280 lbs. Think Dolf Lundgren at his best, probably more.

Mobius 04-07-2018 09:09 PM

So what you're saying is ... Icelandic Superpower. Ok. Got it. Must be all that Skyr.

shuiend 04-08-2018 07:57 AM

Wait this could be good. G3ML1NGZ is a powerlifter. ViperorMiata is a pwoerlifter. I think we are about to have the first MT.net lift off. Next Sunday my backyard. I have several different Miata's they can lift and put in a giant dumpster for me and then I can crown one of them the strongest lifter on MT.

sixshooter 04-08-2018 09:00 AM

Lol.

G3ML1NGZ 04-08-2018 01:40 PM

lol. and a reason to get over there to snag one of your manifolds, even if I know for a fact that viperormiata lifts way more than I do

But since we're on that subject. Both the car and I have had a similar amount of change in the same timeframe

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6663d3aee7.jpg

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c24c413133.jpg

it's a six speed with bilstein suspension and just a really clean car inside and out. It's the only the third miata I've driven but I really like the feel of the Bilsteins.

Mobius 04-10-2018 01:39 AM

I applaud your icelandic superpowers. That silver NB does look pretty sweet.

Plans to rebuild my (literally) disintegrating garage are progressing nicely. Having not your Icelandic Superpowers, I've opted to have an I-beam specced out for the ceiling, so I can run a gantry crane on it, with either a come-along or perhaps a cheap electric winch. Because my swimming superpower days are far behind me, and my hernia potential days are Here and Now :)_

G3ML1NGZ 05-06-2018 07:46 PM

Finally moved in last friday and got the miata home yesterday. I'm just finishing the house, Spackle and paint all over the place. Will use the garage as is and then finish the walls and lay tiles in the fall. But damn it feels good to finally have your own garage

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b8728465a7.jpg

G3ML1NGZ 06-19-2018 06:50 PM

finally got back into working on the car after a short hiatus while getting settled in the new house.

fitted the dynapro's last night.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...46a7fc6df8.jpg
drilled new holes for the rear ABS sensors since the roll bar blocks their original access holes.
reassembled most of the interior

My parents gave me a dash cam and I was wondering about powering it. I seem to have lost my ohmmeter in the move so I can't check my plan so I'm asking you guys.

My hard top does not come with defroster so the plug is just sitting there unused.
Could I use the plug for that as a power source for the dash cam mounted in the roll bar and use the defroster switch as an on/off switch?

otherwise the electrical harness will be finished tomorrow and hopefully tossing the engine in over the weekend.

G3ML1NGZ 09-02-2018 07:23 PM

Last Friday I held the second annual miata gathering. This year the dealership took active part in the planning and advertisement of the gathering and we got 4 miatas that visited us from the Netherlands.
On the day of the gathering I had been working nightshift until 6AM and got woken up by a friend at 10AM saying : "Óttar, you're not showing up there without the engine at least in the car, I brought the hoist". I dragged my ass out of bed and he threw the engine in with me. once that was done another friend showed up with a trailer and we went to the capital where I picked up a red NB that I was taking to the gathering on behalf of an owner that couldn't make it there.

The weather forecast was awful and there had been little activity on the forums so I was very concerned that we'd have low turnout. When I showed up it was only me and the Dutch people. a couple of cars sowed up and then they just kept coming. I was so relieved and so happy with the final turnout of 14 cars which is the majority of miatas in Iceland.

we had 2 photographers, good turnout and good turnout of both owners and onlookers.-

Nice work.

Your engine bay is looking good. How long before it’s running?

G3ML1NGZ 09-02-2018 07:53 PM

thank you :)

But when I bought the house I kinda put the car on pause. I'll finish the garage in a month or two and then start on the car again. Not that much left really but I'll just spend the winter tinkering with it and be ready for next spring

sixshooter 09-02-2018 10:19 PM

Looks like a good event if you can get people to come so far.

Are you planning on coming to Daytona in November for the Turkey Rod Run?

G3ML1NGZ 09-03-2018 05:43 PM

I'm tempted now that you mention it. I'll decide when it gets closer to the event since I might go on a Boeing type course this winter and I don't know exactly when

G3ML1NGZ 09-19-2018 05:20 PM

A friend became a dealer for Theretrofitsource.com and I decided to use the chance and do an upgrade I've wanted to do for a long time. The LED bulbs were strong but there was a little bleed from them, not blinding for oncoming traffic but enough to bug me so I went for a full projector retrofit

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...54646284d5.jpgThe projector, opted for a square lens and shroud to make the most of the space inside the slim miata headlight,
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2d2ee5b84d.jpgquality of parts surprised me. This is an aluminum ballast with the logo machined into the aluminum
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b55be00ee8.jpgall wires well labeled and in braided wire shielding with all ends closed off by glue coated heatshrink
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a5e0d75079.jpgpainted the inside of the lights textured black and had to cut the bottom of the reflector to make space for the projector. Had to trim the projector shroud a bit too but it can't be seen
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...883c5e977b.jpgclose to finished
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...755604ff4f.jpgA mockup of the final product with a flashlight shining through the lens. well pleased with the look and fitment. Front lens not sealed in yet since I still have leveling and minor adjustments left that has to wait until the car can power the ballasts
If anyone has nb1 headlights with nice lenses and broken tabs I'd love to hear from them since I am not quite happy with the state of these even after polishing. the plastic is all crazed on the inside

G3ML1NGZ 09-22-2018 07:37 PM

Switched the electrical system on tonight. No fires and no smoke. That's a win in my book. Now I can kick the final stages into overdive.

fuel, intercooler and engine sensors are all that's left
So I can tinker all winter in small details and not worry about anything big

G3ML1NGZ 04-27-2019 08:11 PM

finally some progress again. just minor stuff remains before I can start the car. We're in the home stretch now!

All that remains is to wire up all the sensors and install the tranny. we're getting close to "go time!"

Love the sunvisor pi idea. Pretty cool. I've built one that's going to go into my dash as well. What OS are you running, and what method did you use to get it to boot into tunerstudio?

sixshooter 04-28-2019 07:36 PM

Sun visor wouldn't work for me because I've got a full roll cage now, but it might be nice to have in the dash.

Please tell me you are headed to Miatas at the Gap this year finally.

I got impatient dealing with raspbian so I bought the premade OS by Pidash. A very convenient solution for a very fair price

Guy is super helpful and very fair on his pricing

And sorry Steve. Through August I'll be taking a Boeing Type certification course. So I won't make it. But I've got entire June off work. anything happening then?

Possibly. I'll let you know.

making the sub harness for the LS1 coils. While being a bit retarded in reading electrical diagrams

My understanding is that the B pin "signal ground to MS3" is the Black wire on the miata harness as per the COP sticky

so where do I get the "power ground to engine?" just wherever or am I mixing these up? it's kinda messing with me since the harness ground also grounds at the intake manifold

Also, I am aware that the rear nb1 and nb2.5 oil pan half moon seals are different, does the same apply to the front seals?

Well, I went to a friends shop and we dragged it through the final stretch.

250wheel horsepower and 206 ft/lbs, we tuned it this time without VVT because he believed that would give the transmission a fighting chance since I'm stuck with the 5 speed with no replacements here in Iceland.

She's smooth and daily driveable, gotta finish a couple of things before inspection and then I can just enjoy. But maaaaan she pulls now

And I got to drive her home... FINALLY!

Excellent. I know the 5 speed is so much better. If you ever need a 6 speed we can break one down to fit more easily into your flight plans.

Do you have interest in coming to Miatas at the Gap this year?

G3ML1NGZ 06-27-2019 10:15 PM

you know. it is during a major holiday in Iceland and everything is closed. I just might. I can tell you more after the weekend

Finally found out why my radiator fan refused to work.Turns out I had been a bit too enthusiastic in my wiring cleanup and had split the blu/yel wire behind the left headlight. Easy splice job though and now it works like a charm.

Wired in the xenon projector retrofit and damn that makes a difference in light output. I highly recommend that mod to any daily driven miata.

Finally got some dry weather and did a couple of pulls in the dry and god damn it is scary even if it's just 250hp.

Welding in the new sway bar mounts and installing the racing beat swaybar tomorrow. Inspection on Monday. Can't wait to be able to go out cruising in this

No replacements in Iceland? If you blow your 5 speed, i can send you another one from germany. Just looked it up, DHL charges 60,99€ up to 31.5kg. I dunno what a 5 speed weights, but i think its around 25kg?
Just send me a PM if you need it.

Dude, I am so grateful for your offer. I am still deciding if I'll go for a six speed or the kmiata zf bmw swap.

I'll decide this winter. For now I'm happy with 250 and getting used to it
