Hi. I write captions above pictures. Enjoy.

I've owned 2 previous Miatas. First one was a Spec Miata that I crudely, and usually very drunkenly, un-spec'd and turned into an HPDE warrior, second one was supposed to be "the one" but it wasn't... We got pregnant and it needed more work than I wanted to deal with at the time so I ended up flipping it (for profit, not upside down).

I guess that means that this one is "the one" now, so here it goes...

The whole build kinda centers around a local time attack series that my friends and I put on here in Southern NM called ASR Super Lap. Competitors are broken down into 3 classes based on their power:weight ratio. I'm building this one for the lower class (Class A) so I'm limited to a maximum P:W ratio or 15:1. I've built/am building a VVT swapped 95 Miata, purely copying the existing SPM blueprint that we've all seen so many times on this forum. I campaigned it the year I purchased it (2017) with a stock powertrain but we swapped my buddies gen1 XIDAS, Recaro SPG, hardtop (and mirrors for some reason?) over. It was fun but, obviously, very slow.

I had picked up a junkyard 02 engine around the same time I got the car with the intent of starting the build after the 2017 season.

Attachment 227841

Pulled the engine and got to work, I did my best to de-clutter the bay without entering "wire tuck" territory. Sprayed the bay a grey that would play a little nicer with the planned exterior color of the car.

While it was sitting I'd tinker with it here and there... I "installed" 3/4 flares before my Amazon riv-nut gun broke. Installed is in quotation marks because I've yet to cut the fenders, it's on the list but I'm still not that car along in the build yet... While I wasn't really doing anything I started slowly wrapping the car. I went with Avery Supreme Gloss Blue because it's a pretty close match to Porsche Voodoo Blue but I've come to find out it's a pretty close match to Mariner Blue as well.

Attachment 227821

As soon as I can source another front bumper it'll get the airdam treatment but I've always loved the GV large canards...

Attachment 227822

Picked up a fiberglass top that suffered some damage in shipping from a friend of mine.

Attachment 227823

And that gets us pretty much current... Car is 90% wrapped right now and I've driven it two or three times, still working on a bunch of kinks, my main one being my lack of MS understanding. 99Mmx5 built my MS3 and has helped me a ton along the way from getting it started to some general info but I've still got a lot the read/understand.

Always good to see more of us here in the Southwest! :friday:

I built basically the same setup (VVT swapped '92), and run it in HPDE and the ProAutosports Hot Laps (their version of TT/ Time Attack). Trying to get a 6 speed swapped in and some aero going for next season...

I pulled my hair out for a few days over a dropped crank signal when I did my swap. About the 30th time I checked the wiring for continuity I found the problem... be persisitent and double, triple and quadruple check everything!

Very cool, PAS runs Inde occasionally, right? Definitely trying to make it back out there sometime next year!

Thanks! Honestly, probably only 6-8 hours into it, if that. I think almost anyone could wrap a car and have it look good in pictures, it's when you get close that you start to notice blemishes... There's a few spots that bug me and I might even re-wrap later now that I'm better at it than I was when I started on the front end but I'd honestly rate it a 7-7.5/10 so far.

So you just bolted fenders on and the wrap makes the transition from fiberglass to metal fender that smooth. Almost looked like you shaved the fenders after bolting it together. If not then I'm sold on wraps.

The flares aren't currently installed yet, I haven't actually cut the fenders to make the flares functional. You can see where I just wrapped over the riv-nuts in the last two 3/4 shots. Basically, the 6ULs fit just fine as-is and I'm more focused on getting the MS3 working as it should so I can have my tuner come tune the car. The fares and a few other things are on the backburner until then.

Nice build, car looks great! Southwest miata's represent!

Funny that you chose that wrap, it's the same color I've been eyeballing to wrap my car with in the spring. I even bought some samples, and it's super close to mariner blue, so I wouldn't have to do my jams. Looks great.

The reason I now know it's a good mariner match is one showed up to spectate at the GTA Finals at Buttonwillow this year and I held my wrapped phone case next to it... It was pretty damned close, I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't have to do your jambs. My plan for jambs/trunk,etc was to follow what I did in the engine bay - grey. I got anxious and bored so I ended up wrapping the car before I sprayed the jambs and trunk but I fully intend to go back and do that soon.

I'm still chasing my tail with my sync loss issues... I've triple checked timing and replaced a few used cam+cranks sensors with used cam+crank sensors but I'm still getting loss (31+32) OCCASIONALLY during a pull but ALWAYS after lifting from one. Did that make sense? Basically, if I'm doing a quick pull (not to redline - my tune sucks) when I lift, I get sync loss, dead throttle pedal, etc... Does this log maybe show something I'm missing?

Turbomack 12-17-2019 04:32 PM

Are the sensors on a separate/clean sensor ground wire or chassis ground? The reverse thrust (i.e. lifting) time period gives me suspicion to think along the lines of a grounding problem. I can’t look at your log because I’m running a different ECU program. Are all other sensors on the same ground circuit working perfectly?

The cam and crank sensors are on a harness I built (yikes) that originates at the factory CAS connector. They share power and ground per Sav's mega-thread. The VVT solenoid and VICs are also pulling their 12v from the CAS connector, but the VICs isn't currently activated.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4f470852e.jpeg

Turbomack 12-18-2019 06:42 PM

There’s only a few people that can walk on water and hear that Sav is one of them so don’t drift (pun intended) from that part. I think you’re on the track to finding a gremlin digging into the harness you built and tracing ground(s) back to the source connections. Keep us posted.

Stock 12-18-2019 07:19 PM

I've already been back through it. :hs:

I built it from scratch using connector kits from ballenger motorsports, except for CAS which at the time (IIRC) they didn't offer a connector kit for. The CAS connector pigtail has been re-soldered since this issue arose.

Which MS? I had sync issues after I shortened the leads on my '99 (to get rid of the Front to Back to Front routing). Am on a MS-3 Basic from MSLabs. Might can help.

He uses (or on l long case version) used the optical isolation circuit. No HW adjustment of VR pots. I had too include some FW filtering and problem was solved. Ian had similar and added some filter caps rather than FW filtering.

If a version with VR inputs, then trim pot adjustment may be called for.

Possibly someone can give advice on setting the VR trim pots. That would seem to me the logical area to work.

Stock 01-05-2020 03:39 PM

So I haven't touch the pots yet but I had a weird occurrence yesterday and I wanted to post about it...

With the holidays and my laziness, I haven't messed with the car in a week or so. I went out yesterday to clean the garage, which involves moving the Miata out, and it wouldn't start. It wanted to, but it was acting like there was timing issue - It was firing and stumbling and popping but it would never catch and idle. I ended up switching it from "falling edge" to "rising edge" and it fired up but the VVT angle gauge was going nuts so I disabled VVT and took it up the road. Car pulled good to redline once, no sync loss, no issues. Turned around and headed home, did a pull and lost RPM, car would not restart, just RPM-less cranking on the side of the road a half mile from my house. I'm sitting there pissed off about having to push it home and then it popped into my head to switch back to "falling edge" and see what happened...

Immediately see RPM in TS but it's doing the same thing it did in the garage, popping and stumbling but not ever really catching and idling. Switched BACK to "rising edge" and the car fired up and I drove it home...

Figured posting this might help narrow something down as far as when I need to be looking at?

^So I guess all that was bullshit...

Tried to start the car just now, didn't show RPM in TS regardless of rising or falling edge? Swapped out the crank sensor with the one I got from patsmx5 and was able to register RPM in TS but it's doing the same thing as far as stumbling without firing but now I'm getting an occasional kickback on the starter.

No, I still haven't touched the pots, past the trubokitty build instructioins seeing as to how I drove it 2 days ago... Should I?

Attached is a sync error log of me starting the car just now. Please help. :sadwavey:

Did you ever get this thing running right? I have the same ECU (I think, it looks the same, mine's a trubokitty ms3x) and I had an issue with the car intermittently misfiring and occasionally simply dying and not re-starting. I ended up tuning the pots, which made no difference. The fix for me was switching to falling edge to rising edge (or vice versa) pickup. I also have a 36-2 FM wheel.

Just saw you posted on the local time attack page, would be awesome to see this car in ABQ if you are able to make it.

Took it to the following year's season opener and blew it up. I didn't have a functioning temp gauge (or any gauges, really...) and the car got hot enough to blow a freeze plug(?)

Let it sit for a while after sourcing another junkyard longblock.

Around late Sept. or '22 I got the car down to work to start swapping engines.

There it is.

Yanked.

Thought it would be a great idea to test the car out at our sister time attack series up in ABQ (3 hour pull) so I pulled a 54hr stint and got the car running 4 hours before it was time to load up and head north.

Surprisingly, I pulled it off and had a great time running a track I'd never driven with a bunch of local track friends who all made the trip up North. (New 111R aero pieces)

Pushed a little too hard on cycled out RRs in the last session, ran out of talent. No damage other than my ego, thankfully.

Car ran great all day but in the last session I felt the hiccup again. By this time on on a whole different engine, had replaced cam sensors, crank sensors, remade my VVT patch harness 3 times and was really at my wits' end with this shit. I was 95% certain the issue was with wiring, be it mine or something in the factory harness so I started acquiring pieces to just redo the whole fucking thing...

Current plan is MS straight to bulkhead connector, new engine harness from scratch (I'm in waaay over my head) and minimizing body harness down to bare minimums. I got on eBay 8 gang switch panel, a Blue sea Fuse box and a dream.

I'd like to say I have good help but she doesn't know what the fuck is going on either.

It seems like everyone who drives at Sandia has a picture of themselves stuck in the sand. What turn is that? Don't think I've gone off on that one.

Sweet updates man. I'm not jealous of the wiring job you are taking on, but interested to see how it comes out. Hope to make it down your way in the fall! Without a tow rig that 6 hour drive is gonna hurt a little, but my cars still pretty streetable still.

I want to keep this thing current but I'm really bad at forums (and progress) these days. 50hr work weeks, two young kids (one in travel baseball) and not having a garage at my house (previous dickhead owners converted it) means I'm rarely wrenching anymore. The car is currently at my buddies house/shop as he's just up the road and kind enough to let me take up some space at his place.

Since the last update things have changed a bit. I picked up a Haltech PD16 and am planning on rewiring the car completely, so now we'll be making an entirely new engine AND chassis harness. I also scored a ridiculously complete JRSC setup (old school timing box and all) as well as some exterior goodies. My friends and I have always gravitated to the Japanese time attack styling so I'm pretty pumped to finally be addressing the exterior, even though there's still a shit load left to do as far as wiring goes. GV knockoff front bumper, Jetstream headlights, VIS sideskirts and GV LED rear finish panel are all making their way onto the car and we'll be pulling the wrap and painting the car Voodoo Blue at some point here in the coming months.

I know this car/thread doesn’t do well over here but I got (another) bumper so here we are. I'd trimmed the eBay GV rep to fir the headlights and was liking the direction the car was taking.

It was starting the resemble the vision I'd had for the car for a while, nothing crazy but for sure more aggressive than a stock bumper and GV canards...

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...bae421f3b.jpeg

Then the (my) holy grail popped up in OR and I had to jump.

Working on getting the larger flares for the car and then probably start prepping for paint. I love the new front end, AFAIK it's the only GHO Wide with Jetstream headlights (I know that's boomer math, blow me) so I'd didn't know what the expect from the combo but I LOOOVE IT.

lol at 1 of 1 boomer math. Cat for you!

that said... looks great

I LOVE that bumper and the direction the car is going. Big props for going with JDM legend parts, in true Japanese time attack style this car is both very aesthetically pleasing and fast.

Was that hint at the JRSC setup indicating it might go on this car? I do hope to make it your way, I actually have a tow rig now (sans trailer) so it's looking more likely I make it down south!

I looked down after completing the boomer equation and saw this:

Thanks! I'm very much style>function and I'm finally at the point when it functions pretty well and the 2.1 GHO racecar from back in the day has always been one of my favorite builds so I'm pumped with where it's headed. I picked that JRSC setup up last year at a steal and I'll happily run it but I'd much rather unload it and go with a Kraken con 2854 or something, ideally.
