nixapgt's boostin barbie car (holsets are obnoxious...)

11 Attachment(s)
back in april i decided a miata would be the perfect platform to start my next project. so i hopped on craigslist and started my search. after a few weeks a '94 with low miles popped up for a great price so i picked it up.
Attachment 192770

couldnt let the car stay stock for long, so back on craigslist and the forums i went. the same week i purchased the car i found a set of low mileage bc racing coilovers and a set os sportmax's
Attachment 192771

i drove around on the sportmax's for a while, but couldnt stand the rubbing. i wasnt about to risk tearing up the body on a 74k mile miata to fit these wheels. sold them and picked up a set of c1m 15x8's. i also installed a momo wheel, greddy shift knob, jvc in-dash tv, touge run lip, kgauto wing, andhad a custom x-brace rollbar built

then it was time to start saving for boost. started searching the classifieds for good deals. pte1000cc injectors, tial wg and bov, holset hy35, :brain: diypnp, aem wideband, gfb g-force ebc, aeromotive fpr, and a 29x9x3 ebay intercooler. went to a local shop and had a log, downpipe, and aluminum intercooler piping made (same shop that made the rollbar)

its still at the shop being finished up. i picked up a spare engine to build and its already at the shop to get built. next immediate purchase is a competition clutch stg.4 and a walbro 255 so i can get it tuned on e85. i will update as more progress is made. thanks for looking, and sorry for the amouint of pics

viperormiata 11-16-2010 12:59 AM

Woo hoo! Nice to see another holset build ;)

Don't ever apologize for pics, we need more.

WonTon 11-16-2010 01:01 AM

look like this has some potential, in for updates. and there is no such thing as to many pics!

miatacross 11-16-2010 01:11 AM

NICE NICE! I especially like how you opted away from the "trendy" crazy-fitment wheels for something that fits better!

May I ask why you're going to use the aeromotive fpr and the walbro fuel pump if you're going to use a standalone? 'Cause you won't need them...

turotufas 11-16-2010 01:19 AM

Kind of Ill though!

nixapgt 11-16-2010 06:51 AM

I appreciate the responses! I still need to look into the walbro 190hp a little more it seems. The goal is somewhere around 400whp on e85. At that level the fpr/255 seemed like a safe choice, especially with 1000cc injectors. Or will the stock for/190hp suffice?

Techsalvager 11-16-2010 08:11 AM

What did you use to paint the compressor housing?

hustler 11-16-2010 08:33 AM

Spraypaint...it's not like it will get hot enough damage the paint.

sasquatch 11-16-2010 04:41 PM

looking good so far :D

18psi 11-16-2010 04:52 PM

I see no fail here at all, unless you mean "failed to fail".
Great start man. Looks like you got everything figured out:)

Yes he will need them. For e85 I suggest Walbro 255HP or the new 300 one that DW just released. At 400whp he will need a humongous pump and the 190 won't cut it.

The FPR isn't a bad idea either for his setup, from what I read/heard. If you check the ID1000's discussion thread Emilio commented on higher pressrue helping the fuel atomize more efficiently/etc.

nixapgt 11-16-2010 07:05 PM

the aeromotive fpr is leftover from a previous project so i figured it wouldnt hurt to use it. id rather just do everything once with this car, which is why i have been fairly selective in buying parts. we went with a 3" cutout in between the downpipe and exhaust so that i could run stock exhaust (love low key and quiet), but not have to sacrifice power. i'll post pics of things as they come along. the head is currently being ported so i will have flow numbers for that as well.

Very nice. What rear end will you run with?

nixapgt 11-21-2010 06:40 PM

stock reat should be just fine. i dont really beat on the car, and i hae no plans to track it. its just a fun street car.

I want your turbo and your tial:D

Nice progress man.

buffon01 11-23-2010 09:11 PM

Holy shit. I want to see how this is going to end up. Very nice built. :bigtu:

The sportmaxx don't look bad either.

nixapgt 11-23-2010 09:25 PM

thanks guys! 18psi, your build inspired me to sell my msm turbo setup to go bigger. i picked the tial up from honda-tech (lol) classifieds for $125 shipped and the holset from cumminsforums for $325. i think the hy35 is going to surprise a few people response wise. needs a tune and a clutch (competition clutch stg.4) asap. still tryin to decide if i want to run my 560's and 93, the1000's and take my chances with the e85 "winter" blend.

18psi 11-23-2010 09:31 PM

Thanx man. Glad to inspire:)

Unless you live 100 miles away from an e85 station or some other excuse like that, there really isn't any comparison between the two.

And what is this winter blend talk?
I heard it here and there, but when asking around locally everyone seems to say that nothing changes and we get the same e85 year round.

Maybe other states/cities are different? i dunno

nixapgt 11-23-2010 09:39 PM

i actually live less than a mile from a station that carries e85. i'll ask my roomate more specifics on the winter blend thing, as he praises e85 (656whp dsm). he was saying that cold starts are a bitch with it as well, 35 degrees right now.

18psi 11-23-2010 09:42 PM

cold starts are only bad when you don't have the settings dialed in right.

my car used to have god awful cold start til I finally got the settings right.

now its not perfect (I'll still be ironing it out) but its nowhere near "BAD".

05pearl 11-23-2010 09:43 PM

block heater and extension cord will solve your cold start needs in the winter.

curly 11-23-2010 09:46 PM

Nice build, but spend $75 somewhere besides different color couplers.

nixapgt 11-23-2010 09:50 PM

if it doesnt snow this week like they are calling for i will throw the 1000's in and give it a try. hopefully i will have the majority of the parts for the built motor in the next few weeks. plan is to have the motor built and in by mid january (dads a professional machinist, luckily).

nixapgt 11-23-2010 09:58 PM

curly: no money spent. i planned on switching them out for my roomates black couplers when he wasnt home haha.

Small update since I'm a lazy, cheap bastard. Pulled it apart this week to install a competition clutch stg.4. I have to wait to get the flywheel resurfaced monday. Installing the walbro 255 and pte 1000's at the same time. It will also be getting an exhaust built as soon as it is back on the ground. I will miss the open downpipe, sadly.

Any update to this party?

nixapgt 07-13-2011 05:01 PM

I beat on it every time I drive it. Slowly gathering parts to build the engine. 8lbs of holset fun has been keepin me plenty satisfied though. I love the way this turbo performs. The wastegate did fall off once. Apparently cheap bolts break after a few heat cycles...oops. I still need to install the stock rail i tapped for a barbed fitting to run an aeromotive fpr for the e85 stuff.

2001 KLG4
RX-8 6-speed
Competition Clutch clutch/flywheel
V8Roadsters mount kit
Ebay headers

Plan on using MicroSquirt, LSX coils, and a Scirocco radiator tucked under the core support. 2.5" exhaust.

Prothane complete kit for the suspension. Might add a Rb hollow bar and Wilwoods. New wheels are Rota Grid, 15x9. 225/45 BFG Rivals should be here shortly.

Autolonexion V2 flares and Trunk are the only real changes to the exterior.

turbofan 05-12-2013 05:31 PM

Impressive. However, going from a holset boosted BP to an NA KL you'll be losing power. Or did you keep the holset? :hustler:

AlexL 05-12-2013 09:54 PM

Wow. This just got serious.

Dual Holsets. :giggle:

nixapgt 05-13-2013 04:36 PM

Throwing a turbo on the KL has crossed my mind already. There's plenty of room with this cross member

Braineack 05-13-2013 04:39 PM

I thought that was a BP sitting on an angle, then I read.

inferno94 05-13-2013 04:54 PM

I'm jelly of the kl miata but come on 3 years and your bumper emblem is still upside down?!

Fireindc 05-13-2013 06:13 PM

Well, this just went from awesome to aweseomer.

nixapgt 05-13-2013 11:48 PM

I'm hoping to have the engine mounted in the next few days. I'm a little irritated with it, as the adapter plate for the trans had several holes that didn't want to line up. Oh well, installing this Prothane kit should keep me occupied for a bit.

I'll fix that emblem one of these days.

inferno94 05-14-2013 04:47 PM

Is that Clairetoo's trans adapter or locally made?

This thread is making me feel bad about my choice to "build" my bp.

nixapgt 05-14-2013 05:17 PM

I bought an adapter setup from Claire. Then shortly after, I purchased the V8Roadsters setup, which included the adapter for the RX-8 trans. So the adapter kit from Claire needs to sell so I can spend some more money.

Fireindc 05-14-2013 05:24 PM

I can now see the "fail" in this thread. It's the budget part that is failing, right?

concealer404 05-14-2013 05:36 PM

Ahhhh goddamnit i forgot to look for your throttle body... I still have the manifold for you. Sowwy. :(

nixapgt 05-14-2013 08:10 PM

Yes, the "failing" is the long lost budget.

Left me know what ya find, Concealer. Money ready when you are.

On another note, I did just try to put the engine in...well, tried. For some reason there's several bolts that don't seem to line up. Time to take the trans adapter to the machine shop...

Nothing exciting goin on. Just a few boring pics to add. This V8Rkit is a slight pain in the ass. It's almost there though. Urethane bushings, flares, and the engine should be in by the weekend. Triumph ITB's are in the mail. Discussing a plenum for them, as well. BFG Rivals mounted.

Time for a little update, I suppose. Not that my progress is anything special, or exciting.

Lets see where we left off...

Got some things painted
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429142664

Shortly after I decided I hated the car and needed a break. In came this
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429142664

Traded that for a nice Yamaha R6, then sold that for a huge profit. Took that money and put a little into this beater 510
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429142664

Then I got a little carried away and started buying too many cars. I bought a clean, very stock convertible 240sx, turned it into this, and sold it right after it was finished.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429142664

Then i finished this, which I saved from rotting in a field. Ended up with a blacktop s14 sr20 and a bunch of typical 240 shit
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429142664

Continued in the next post....

There were a few other cars in there, such as a 350z and so on. Then my girlfriend took a job 3hrs away, so it was time to sell them and get ready to relocate.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429143152

Loaded up and ready for its new home, to continue to get neglected, although, much less.

Here it is, all tucked away in its new https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429143152

So now we are a little more up to date. Ive been collecting more parts, as I gain the finances to get what I want for it. That includes Microsquirt, Wilwood front brakes, brake booster delete with a Wilwood master, ITB's, and some other odds and ends. Still a ways to go, but it will get finished.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429143152

Until next time....
