VVT ThuperDuper Turbo Build

4 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, wanted to create an official build thread. Zack here from Manassas VA. I bought my 01 Miata LS with 80k two summers ago (May 2016) and ever since have been dumping money into it. I have tons of pictures I will try to load up in a logical order of all of the things done so far. But the main point of this thread to talk about the current turbo build, and to source some knowledge for a few questions that I may have along the way. I have the ThuperDUPER 18psi kit that was sold to chilicharger, then to huesmann, and finally to myself. Looking to build a fun weekend/autox toy.

Nice car. Is that the Touge Run front lip or the ebay version? Also, could you give me some details on the fog lights when you get a chance? Thanks.

Ebay 01 lip for 50 bucks or whatever.

Foglights are the stock housings painted with yellow stained glass paint, then i ordered a set of stock bulb sockets that are specific to the car, cut the guts out of them, and RTVed a HID bulb to them from a amazon HID kit.

Got your email, thank you. I'll get started on it after the 3 miatae ahead of yours.

I hope your MTX-L isn't a pain to tune cold starts with due to the super long warmup time.

sonofthehill 01-22-2018 12:38 PM

I just watch pulse width when it says htr and logs 7.2.

18psi 01-22-2018 12:50 PM

and then guesstimate afr from it? hmm, that's not a terrible idea. I usually just wire to independent power source for proper cold start tuning :)

but can't do that with remote-tunes, I'll have to try your method

muthagoose 01-22-2018 06:43 PM

Yeah sorry wish i knew the innovate wideband gauge was such a pain before i went deep into 3 gauges haha. Psyberoptix mentioned the same thing. Look forward to getting started on the tuning. Flex sensor should be going in this weekend hopefully, might start prepping the intercooler and piping on the car as well.

sonofthehill 01-22-2018 09:00 PM

Just a reference point, I know I need to be around 2-2.2ms during ASE depending on the temperature, for my car. Ideally the sensor would have a power source that doesn't get interrupted during cranking, but PW is helpful when AFR isn't.

muthagoose 01-25-2018 12:03 AM

So how much flame will i get running my flex sensor using quick connects to gates barricade 225psi bio fuel hose and fuel hose clamps? I will eventually be going AN when adding a return line and radium rail. But for now....? Ive seen some do this and honestly, the fit is incredibly tight and a nice stretch in the rubber hose onto the nylon quick connect barb, extra security with the fuel hose clamps. Any care to chime in?

Some build updates from the weekend.

Decided to just send it and went quick connect to barb and clamps with gates barricade 225 psi flex fuel hose for my flex sensor install. Plan is to eventually go radium rail and return style setup with AN lines.

In preparation for my DW200 install I pieced together a quick hardtop hoist. A few pulleys, carabiners, and rope.

muthagoose 02-28-2018 10:27 AM

Sorry for the delays on the build. I figured I would update you all with some small things from the past month or so. Pics to come later.

Flex Sensor is plumbed and working great with the quick connect barbs and fuel hose clamps.
Installed DW200, felt sketchy using butt connectors for a submersed connection. I have an extra butt connector and shrink wrap sitting in a glass jar submerged in fuel to test and see if they will degrade or not.
Bought a Innovate Oil Pressure/Temp gauge, will be installing in Eyeball.
Found a Lotus seat for cheap, ordered a set of Flipside Brackets which should be done in a week or so.
Ordered Silicone Intakes.com Black 10an line for oil drain with 30 and 60 degree ends, and 4 an line with 90 and 60 degree ends to grab oil feed from VVT solenoid.
Godspeed intercooler is back from welder, had a GM IAT bung added on the cold side end tank.

I have been remote tuning the car with 18psi, going great tuning on 93, will be setting up the E85 table here shortly, then onto the turbo install!!

18psi 02-28-2018 12:13 PM

Maybe I'm missing something: why did you use butt connectors to install the dw? Isn't it completely pnp?

Revision coming soon (didn't get a chance to send one last night)

psyber_0ptix 02-28-2018 12:29 PM

Should be

Not according to trackspeed and the kit i received. I did talk to Ballengher motorsports as well, they were able to track down the type of connector on the inside of the tank cover, so i could and will eventually order two of those weatherpack still crimp connections to remove the butt connectors and shrinkwrap, and just go into the stock connector. That is unless you all know of a different wiring harness?

I look forward to the Flex tuning Vlad, you ready for it?

Deatschwerks Fuel Pumps (DW100/200/300)
Application notes:
  • All pumps:
    • 1990-1993 users will need to modify their fuel pump hangar to install the fuel pump.
    • 1994-1997 is 100% plug and play
    • 1999-2005 users will need to wire in the included wiring pigtail

18psi 02-28-2018 02:27 PM

I was born ready :) lol

When I installed my dw200 onto the msm, it was 100% plug and play and required no cutting/splicing/anything.

I understand upgrading the wiring when stepping up to big boy fuel pressures/power levels or if original wires are questionable, but otherwise not sure why the above is mandated.

muthagoose 02-28-2018 04:19 PM

Do you remember where you bought it from? Id love a PNP pigtail. Then i can sleep at night...

But yeah, i bought mine with a NB2 install kit, which was a open ended pigtail that connected to the pump.

18psi 02-28-2018 05:12 PM

Hmm let me see if I can figure out what exactly I used, this was years ago.

Build is back on, Engine is out and turbo build has officially begun!

Car has been running on a VLAD flex tune for the last few months nicely. Been working on some AC idle up gremlins and IAT heat soak, which should be resolved with IAT located in intercooler.

Plans with engine is out as follows:
SNS mazda parts depowered rack installed, power steering bits removed.
Oil Sandwich plate install for pressure/temp gauge
Mishimoto fan shroud and fans
Skunk2 intake Manifold
some lightweight alternator and water pump pulleys ive had sitting around that match valve cover
Stage 2 FM clutch and flywheel, rear main seal, throwout bearing
Vapor Canister and stock manifold pressure business removed.
Absurdflow manifold, T25g Garret, godspeed intercooler, and FM bits turbo build

Convert to return style fuel setup with Radium rail?????????

Sorry everyone, this build got real serious real fast!

Google Photos Dump is updated! https://photos.app.goo.gl/yYoGWhUbjGUsqeUC7

Turbo is installed and still dialing in tune with Vladitune, working on EBC at the moment. The car will hit about 10 psi up top on wastegate, and around 6-7 in middle rpm ranges as is. Trying to diagnose some turbo seal blow by on this T25. I am going to pull the turbo shortly and install a dynamic 360degree full seal kit and see if that solves my issue. Currently running a .065 restrictor on it.

LRB Speed full undertray on the way, and some more bling with a CF garagestar wiper cowl cover.

The car made it recently to the DMV Miata expo, and h2.o.i 2018 in OCMD.

Present day vs bringing home my 3600$ 2001 ls with 82k in the spring of 2015.

Picked up a "Carbon" 3 piece big wang. Fitment isnt the greatest. Working with the seller on a fix/replace.

IMHO in person think it looks good with the hardtop on the car and the stock small tupperware sides, and large rear flaps. However with the top off, the car starts to look a bit unbalanced.

muthagoose 10-10-2018 05:35 PM

Also got around to installing my Advanced Autosports NACA duct.

Install was a pain as most know. Have to remove the door glass, and the way Advanced has the duct mounted so low, it interferes with the outside seal, and inside trim piece.

Works like a dream though! You can drive top up, windows up in 80 degree heat and be super cool. Found that a spray paint cap works great to close when not needed.

I think a 3D printed louver cap would be nice to have.

Sub'd. This is basically my build plans short of the manifold and exhaust. How's the spool on the T25G? I have a recently rebuilt one as well! the FM hose is my hopeful way of keeping AC.

18psi 10-27-2018 02:13 AM

Here's the latest log he sent me, I've only tuned him on wastegate so far, but as you can see, it's really promising :)

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7dda71e15d.png

it goes into boost faster than he can press the go pedal, and hits peak boost by 2800 :likecat:

s0n1cm0nk3y 10-27-2018 11:33 AM

NICE! Are you thinking of adjusting the timing to save the rods and keep the torque low in the lower rpms?

OP: Let us know how it goes and what your thoughts are. I'm still getting my parts at the moment but I'm looking forward to see your thoughts and some numbers!

s0n1cm0nk3y 01-23-2019 11:01 PM

Any updates?

muthagoose 01-25-2019 03:33 PM

Hey all... Car has been down for winter here in Northern VA. Plans for winter are to rebuild the T25g to hopefully solve a decel smoking issue. I have a rebuild kit sitting waiting for me to get the motivation for pulling the turbo. Will be setting up electronic boost control in the spring with Vlad.

I have a few other parts sitting to install over the winter, mostly appearance related- LRB speed full Aluminum undertray and a Garage Star CF Windshield cowl cover. Been working on driving comfort/positioning and installed my Momo mod 69 with Works bell short hub and QD v2.8 by NRG. Will be pairing this with a 6pt harness with some mods to the Lotus Elise, seat adding grommets by InoKinetic. Havent decided on the harness yet, but want something in the pull up style lap belts and cam style lock. Black/green Takatas?>

This summer hopefully is just enjoying the car and turbo setup. Will be looking into pad/rotor upgrades for my sport brake setup.

As you can see, i installed a 3 piece carbon wing, a set of hood vents from Wilvern Motorsport. Finally got a new softop installed along with some other odds and ends.

In Jan/Feb of this year (2020) I broke a rod in the old setup which was a T25 turbo running right about at 240 whp.... I full sent it up a slippery hill hitting limiter, some "accidental" 2 step in there too. And did this.

muthagoose 10-02-2020 11:07 AM

During the teardown, i discovered an issue with my clutch which in hindsight turned out to be really good timing.

Apparently during my last build i didn't use the larger throw-out bearing that FM sells for their clutch.. this make a big deal because the standard one will slip down into the fingers, and sit weird and do this to your brand new clutch..... womp womp.

So i was sitting around trying to decide what direction to go with this build, was debating rebuilding, or buying, or swap. When i came across an amazing deal that was localish from a fellow miata guy who recently wrecked his NB and was going K swap in his next build.

I was able to pickup an entire Trackspeed built VVT longblock with very very low miles including some extras.

Thats not going anywhere
