Awesome flood of updates, just spend a good 15 minutes catching up. So to clarify, you now have a fresh bottom end and head on this thing?

I love the FD wheels personally. How do 17s look on mx6's? Have any pics?

concealer404 04-05-2014 11:57 PM

Well... the car isn't back together right now. Still need to rip the old ill-fated motor out, and assemble the new head.

But otherwise, yeah. Fresh not-"built"-but-optimized bottom end. The head is... well, you'll have to wait for updates. You'll like it.

17s look fine on mx6s. The first pictures in this thread were 17s actually. But with shitty 205/40-17 tires.

Wait.. is that 1 intake valve per cyl? Headwork looks awesome, i'm kinda sad this isn't going into a miata.

jk :P

concealer404 04-11-2014 07:11 PM

2 intake valves per cylinder. 1 exhaust valve.

The headwork IS awesome. I'm expecting positively enormous gains, considering just how awful this thing was before it was touched.

THIS one isn't going in a miata. ;)

leboeuf 04-11-2014 07:50 PM

Just curious, that little area between your exhaust valve and spark plug hole looks a little suspect.
In the b2600i world (scaled version of the 2.2 12 valve head) that head would be drinking coolant...

But we have heard that not all of the mazda castings were created equally and sometimes that crack doesn't make it to the water jacket.
Then again it could just be that the 2.6 head stretched the design too far.

concealer404 04-11-2014 08:24 PM

Yep, two chambers have cracks between the spark plug boss and exhaust valve. Shitty casting. The two that have the crack have less distance between the two.

The head was taken to two shops and they verified that it's not going any further than surface. No sealing issues, and definitely not deep enough to get into any fluids.

With the work done, heat buildup in that area will also be drastically reduced, so i'm not worried about it. Turns out this head was also a non turbo head, which may have something to do with it. But... a quick poll of the forums showed that half the guys that have looked have the same cracks.

Next head for the miata will not have those cracks.

What's the sense of having a full set of 25 year old gauges if you aren't going to run them all and rage when they break?

Ok, so what have i done here? I've removed about 10lbs of wire, plastic brackets, and over 500 feet of electrical tape that are not necessary to be present in order to drive the car. Another 20-30 wires are coming out of the chassis harness once i gut the corresponding circuits in the dash harness.

Quite literally... i will have removed 80% of the body harnesses. Me gusta.

Saturday's bounty. The white box in the middle is the CPU i was talking about that controlled the Opera Lights (Interior lights dimmed to off like a movie theater instead of just shutting off all at once) and the alarm/keyless entry. The silver box it's sitting on was some crazy shit that controlled all the speed sensitive things. (Suspension, steering.) The way it worked was mind-boggling. The car has a mechanical speedo cable and no ABS.

Ready? Get THIS shit.

There's a friggin' Hall Sensor built into the gauge cluster that measures the turning speed of the speedo cable at the cluster. Then sends electric signal to silver box. Silver box translates and sends commands to other two black boxes not shown. Active steering and active suspension.

AND IT WORKED. DA FUQ.

Looks like the same sensor they used on the GC 626/323GTX/GD 626 with digital dash. Might be a reed switch, i don't know. It measures shit. It's build a better mousetrap. It's Mazda.

Just seems like a weird thing to integrate instead of just offering the electronically controlled shit ONLY in a package with ABS. Which... is another thing this particular car doesn't have that it seems like it should. REALLY bizarre build out on this thing.

Factory:
Electronically controlled speed sensitive power steering
Electronically controlled speed sensitive suspension
CD player
Subwoofer
Power windows, locks, belts, and sunroof
Theft Deterrent System w/ keyless entry
Opera Lights

Lacking:
Cupholders (Weren't an option)
ABS
4WS

I've also found evidence that heated seats were an option on these cars in other markets.

Basically, this car is hosed and wasn't repaired properly the last time it was totaled. I'll fix it, but it's not going to be able to happen until winter. Will be making some fairly large changes when i do so, though. Flat bottom and aero time.

Efini~FC3S 06-22-2014 03:13 PM

rust

it's the worst

concealer404 06-22-2014 04:28 PM

Pretty much. I don't think this has gotten any worse in the time i've had it, though. The good news is that it has no rust in all the normal terminal places these cars tend to get.

Beyond what you see in the pictures, the only other rust repair necessary on the entire car is 4 fairly straightforward holes in the floor, none of which are real large, all of which are on the seams, furthering my theory that these cars tear themselves apart when stressed with lots of power and g-forces.

I'll be seam-welding the entire car this winter as well, to combat further deterioration.

To be clear, none of the damage you see would have happened if the car had been repaired properly when it gained its salvage title.

I bought a new LX rack awhile back in preparation for this, hoping they mounted up the same, despite Mazda having different part numbers for LX and GT rack bushings and straps.

Looks the same at first glance, so here we go!

Gutted/depowered the new rack yesterday. Fairly straightforward job.

Step 1: Remove inner tie rods
Step 2: Disassemble rack
Step 3: Curse all the disgusting grease and fluids that get all over you, and clean the innards of the rack up as much as possible
Step 4: Remove O-ring and seal on rack

Reassembly is reverse of disassembly.

Removed old steering rack. New steering rack is about half the weight of the old one. Another 10-15lbs shaved off the car awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww yiss. Also looks like the Energy Suspension Poly rack bushings for the ZX2 Escort i ordered are going to work pretty well.

Well to be fair... i have a 13.2 @ 118 trap from years ago somewhere still. This was a "lol look at this awful slip" type deal. 110mph track sucks dick.

I'll be sadpanda if this thing doesn't end up around 125-130mph, just as reference. It wasn't a "feel sorry for me" or "look at all the excuses i have" post. I have no idea what ET it'll hit, though. I'll be happy with anything in the 12s. I care about power, not how well it hooks from a dig. MPH shows power. :)

Isn't that always how it is? You will pretty much get used to the car, no matter what the power level. Doesn't mean that it is not "fast" by most normal people's standards though.

concealer404 10-03-2014 03:24 PM

Only the finest used circle track fittings purchased by the fist full for this fine automobile.

And some hilariously cheap Ebay fittings again for vent/catch can things.

More used AN shit from the circle track place. I like $5 Earl's filters. Coupled directly to fuel rail to eliminate a failure point or two, and because it looks clean.

Just need to run another vacuum line or two, mount up intercooler/piping, attach battery, and see if she cranks on Wednesday. If it cranks and pump primes, will move forward with re-wiring pump, putting fresh gas in, and trying to fire it on Thursday. If fire on Thursday, will have wiring cleaned up on Saturday and interior will start going back in. Dash last, we have some work to do to mold in some $3 chinese gauge pods awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwyiss.

Well, there's really only about 48 hours of work left at this point, i think.

This car is about to become a meth whore, though. :brain:

Spraying meth seems a whole lot easier than actually controlling timing.
