Default The Starliata Build thread

So, I originally posted this build thread in engine performance, didn't know there was a dedicated section for that. Well found it, I messaged two admins if they could move my thread here, but no response, so I guess Ill make a new one.

Here is a link to the original
https://www.miataturbo.net/engine-pe...starlet-87099/

Anyway, onto the car. It's a 1981 Toyota Starlet, RWD, 1800lbs, perfect platform for a build.

I found a wrecked 2001 Miata with a 5spd at a junkyard on labor day weekend, so half price. Walked away with the engine, trans, and wiring harness for $256.

I've got the engine in the car now and I've still got future plans for it. Went to my first autocross last weekend and it went well, here is a video.

I'm getting ready for next weekend, little things mostly. I present the Starliata cluster.

Here is the car last weekend.

Other pics.

Caged, Tubbed, boosted car that I can take to racing events reliably. Right now the plan is Shortened S10 rear end with LSD and disc brakes, then Tubbed and phat tires in the rear with a cage. Turbo in there somewhere.

My first car was a 92 Subaru Justy and my dream was to build it like that. Props to you man.

Thanks guys, I put a lot of labor into the car.

I actually have a build sheet totaling how much I've spend on the car.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...vmVzwLcNU/edit

With the actual cost of the car($400) I'm less than 1500$ in.

Re-subbed I guess.
What did your finished motor mounts look like?

Autocross yesterday with some new tires. Too much oversteer, need to get some on the back as well.

Thanks!

So I've been looking into a MS.

If I get an MS3x will that control the VVT? Or do I still need to get the VVTuner?

If so can I just get a basic MS3 to offset the cost of the VVTuner? Or is it required to get MS3x?

Right now my cart is,I know I still need a WB, but what else would be required? I was planning on just cutting the current ECU's plugs and using that wiring into the MS.

EDIT* Also I believe I can use the stock cam/crank sensor with the MS right? I don't have to swap them with earlier ones do I?

2nd EDIT* So after a little more reading, the vvt tuner is required, so the choice is between THIS MSPNP and the vvtuner or the above without the expansion board and the vvtuner instead.

MS3x will run vvt.
You swapped the entire harness right?
You should be able to just buy one for an 01 and save yourself a ton of hassle.
Buy one from brain, a wideband, and an iat sensor, and you should be good to go.

That's awesome to hear! I bought the entire harness, but I cut it down to get rid of what I didn't need. That should be enough right? I don't see why not.

Don't I need the GM coolant sensor?

Nope, factory Mazda coolant sensor works just fine.

I was bored the other day, guess I need a different manifold or I'll have to make one.

Sorry for kind of leaving this thread. I left Missouri for the Air Force in June, and I put the car in storage.

I will be done with tech school here in Texas in January.

Until then the car is safe in storage, definitely not abandoned. My plans are to mega squirt it and auto crosses next spring. As of right now I plan on buying a Miata here. I want an NB, but will probably end up getting a NA6 or NA8, there is a nice 90 silver 5spd for 1250$ Dented fender and bad top, but looks good. I'd like to keep the car under $2k and not planning on boost or anything right now. Just something to drive around and maybe autocross in Dallas.

So since I swapped an 01 engine in my Starlet, it's only fitting I buy an 01 Miata right?

1800$ Has some pretty good issues, straight pipe, it's just dumb how loud it is I hate it so much. It's also wayyyy to low, it scrapes on pretty much everything, atleast it came with nice Megan coilovers.
Also has a little shutter when taking off, maybe warped flywheel or motor mounts? Any experience with this?
The seats are absolutely ruined, rest of the interior is pretty good. Also the AC doesn't work, he said the condensor is cracked, i'm suspecting front end collision. Also the rear fender has been crushed pretty good, but I believe I can work it out, fender flairs in suit.
The top also has a couple holes in it but thankfully he gave me a new one to put on.
Otherwise it drives good and really handles well, I love it.
