1988 Mazda 323 GTX - $$4000

Status: Clean Title I have a 1988 Mazda 323 GTX for sale, in USA - Illinois. Engine Size: 1.6l Asking price is $$4000 So I need to get back to building my Miotta and having another Fun car around isn't helping. As much as I know I'll regret this... I feel I'm making the right decision. I am basically selling this car: http://www.angrywolf.com/gtx/gtx.htm BUT with a rebuilt motor that has perfect oil pressure (mazdaspeed HV oil pump) No more 16" Motegi (boat anchors) Text from that site about the car The chassis has 130k miles on it. The engine was rebuilt 10k miles ago with factory components (crank is .010" under on all journals, pistons .010" over) except for the ARP head studs and Cometic head gasket. The transmission is a JDM unit with lower miles. The turbo was rebuilt six hundred miles ago by Majestic and functioning perfectly. The car has the following upgrades; Centerforce clutch Mazdaspeed LSD in rear Corksport shifter bushings Ground Control coil overs Koni adjustable shocks Cusco adjustable camber plates - front and rear Cusco rear strut tower bar Cusco front and rear sway bars Cusco front lower a-arm brace Braided steel clutch and brake lines Custom cold air intake Custom exhaust Reich computer Poly bushings all around Mazdaspeed engine mounts Motegi wheels with Toyo tires Battery relocated to trunk The suspension is set up perfectly and the car is very tight. The custom exhaust was built with mature drivers in mind so it has a good sound - not a fart can. The car has some rust as you would expect from a twenty year old Japanese car thats been used - all four corners around the wheel wells have some rust and there is some in the pan in the foot well. The real problem is that the oil pressure has been dropping and I'm sure that all the engine bearings will need to be replaced. Pressure currently falls to 20lbs at cruising speed when warm. Probably the oil pump will need to be replaced as well (a high volume factory unit made for the rally cars is $180 and still available). Another option is to simply drop in a 1.6 Miata engine (it's about drop in simple). If you want to go the Miata engine route, I know where there is a perfect one for $700 with only 10k on it. Front lip included with sale Upgraded bov/bypass valve Fresh fluids, Delvac for engine, Amsoil for trans/center diff and diff. Ready to drive, I'd honestly trust it to daily drive. Despite its "age". I don't drive it much, but when I have, its been driven all over the Chicago area. Will include an ENTIRE extra 323 GTX drivetrain. Stock motor/trans, rebuilt center diff. Spindles w/brakes. Stock axles. Stock open rear diff. Stock ECU. Stock under engine metal splash/bash trays. Digital gauge cluster. Few other things I can't remember.) Will also include the Lip (it is NEW) pictured here: http://323gtx.homestead.com/files/spoiler.jpg Will also include a red hatch that has the OEM wings on it and wiper unit. Could paint it and install, or just swap wings onto the base 323 hatch on the car. Was on there from previous owners for lighter autox use. Current wheels are the ones in the snowy picture. With Michelin (i think) snow tires. I have another set of wheels as an option, mesh style with old tires that I can't confirm the condition of honestly. Feel free to ask about anything on it and I'll answer up here. |
How bad is the rust?
|
It is mainly hidden from view rust. Under the floor pan, hole through drivers floor by jack point. I didn't use the jackpoints on the sides due to it.
It was something I would have eventually addressed though, but it doesn't prevent any use of the car and is out of sight. Just as described in the angrywolf website details. |
sure wish I was in a good spot to take this off your hands!
GLWS man! |
Hey Dave,
I see you on GRM forum all the time....I guess you finally understand the motto "the answer is always a Miata" :) |

Oh man. This makes me a sad panda :( I was excited to have another turbo miata guy (well, former turbo miata guy) in the GTX crowd. Hopefully brain buys it and it will be an even trade =P
Let it be known that finding a GTX that isn't immediately in need of suspension work is a HUGE plus. That alone makes this car worth it big time. Rear shocks for that car are nearly impossible to find and if its got koni's you can always rebuild them. By the sounds of it, this car is set up very well and would be a very FAST autoxer. GLWS! |
Yah, it has Uber rare unobtainable Konis for the car. Plus if bought with the spares... it has the almost equally rare Tokico Dirtas.

I can vouch for this car, it is really clean...I wish I had the extra cash laying around Dave, glws
|
For people mulling it over. As stated seperate spares from car, I'm willing to reduce price by not selling the spare drive train with it.
|
For reference... I'm not 100% firm on price. Spares and such can also be taken out of the package for a decent price drop.
|
buy this, own part of awesome mazda history.
|
What type of deal are people looking for on this? Kind of surprised at the lack of interest :(
|
I'd want it, but my wife thinks it would be silly of me to sell my cheap ass POS DD thats model year 2000 for another cheap ass pos DD that's a model year '88 :giggle:

Ah, but this one lacks the POS issue :)
|

I'd be a lot more interested if it didn't have the rust mentioned. Also, another problem I have with these cars is the weak driveline. Is there a cure for that?
In all seriousness, you can spend ~4000 on parts plus countless hours of labor swapping in a GT4 transmission from an AWD celica. They are known to be bulletproof somewhere north of 450hp. With some care, these transmissions aren't as bad as people make them out to be. If you keep the power at around 200 and dont do any clutch dumps, especially on dry pavement, they should be fine for a long time. Also, using shockproof trans oil helps a lot from what i've heard. The amazing thing about these cars seems to be the way they handle in the snow, dirt and tarmac. I haven't been able to drive mine yet (almost done with it) so I cannot say first hand how well they handle but bob bundy swears to me that his GTX rotates better than his miata. Rust is a killer. I'm glad I found a GTX that is mostly rust free. But if you could drive this car for 5 years and have 5 years of fun with it and try not to think about the hidden rust, I think you'd get your money's worth. You could even hunt down a rust free shell and swap all the go-fast parts into it. |
I have no clue how i'd ship that transmission... beyond palleting it up. Isn't the lightest sucker.
I'm happy to part them out... BUT I do want to wait until a buyer for the car is found. If they don't want them packaged in... then I can separate. I feel like I make my buyer pool smaller if I don't offer nice spares. ...I might do the Dirtas though... make me a decent offer and I can pull the old crusty springs off to save shipping... I figure the transmission is the real sweet item for people. A reminder to possible buyers though... the spares are NOT needed. They are being offered as future proofing for the car. Car runs/drives perfectly fine and needs nothing at this moment. |

The Konis that the car comes with can have new inserts put into the housings if they ever blow. The rare part here are the housings themselves. |

Lolz....these are not the droids you are looking for... |
Are you interested in any trades? I have some "stuff."
|
FOID type trades could be considered... ie: guntoys in the world of IL.
|
I've got a number of Colt 6920s that are just sitting at my gunsmith waiting for buyers.

Would put me on track for 3gun gatherings. |
yo, I sent you a pm
|
Om nom nom nom.
|
Really interested in this. Think it would make the drive back to eastern WV no problem?
Better rust pictures, and pictures of the wheels would be great. Email is wilallin@gmail.com. Just let me know. |
Will work on pictures for all. Having a bit of a life event happening, so have patience with me.
And I don't see why it couldn't make the drive. I've driven it all over the Chicago are since I bought it. Few thousand miles of just driving it. Auto'x it... nothing fell off ;) and had it out for fun in the Chicago blizzard without any issues. At worst... you'll have the option of having a spare for basically every part of the car sitting inside it somewhere :P |

Unknown wheel brand, but they were insanely lighter than the 240sx se wheels I had on before. You can see on the rust spots in front of the rear wheel, I have the trim piece that normally hides it. |

Since this was requested by someone, I figured I'd update with it here also.
Spares list... Off the top of my head: Full engine with accessories (including turbo/dp/manifold etc) Transmission Center diff (rebuilt and tight) driveshaft stock oem rearend all axles all spindles all brakes oem radiator (recored I believe) oem intercooler intercooler hoses stock ecu stock air filter/afm unit lower back part of front fender metal misc. interior pieces full oem rear hatch with wings/wiper/wiring factory splash/bash metal under trays. I think thats it. I basically stripped an entire car of everything I thought was worth having as a spare. Minimal interior pieces due to mouse infestation. I also have a little notebook of all maintenance to all those parts from 130k to 200k. Including oil changes, replacements, rebuild/updates, turbo replacement, spindle bearing rebuilds etc.... |
Dirtras are sold. Otherwise, entire package deal is still available.
|
Willing to consider offers folks. Not firm at 4k.
Also willing to consider partial FOID trades. Out of state gets funky though, so FOID trades should probably be local :( Also have a bit of patience... have some family craziness going on right now. |
Normal life should resume Monday.... buyers are welcome to test drives
|
For all the people checking this out... make offers people :p
I've already said I can work out a deal.... |
Good car Splitime! I want to get some discounts on it. Could you give me some? PM me sweety
|
Dude, who the fuck are you?! ^^^
|
wow, that's a deal. if I had my house by now, I'd book a flight to chicago lol. GLWS
|
Installed lip today (bumper lights are not back in yet in picture), hard to see due to shitty camera....

Someone buy this.

GLWS... Someone buy this, if you do you can personally own a "badass muthafucka" wallet, because you'd help fund a very anticipated build, and get a sweet ride out of it. |
Oh and I had to much with contrast a bunch so the lip was actually visible.... weird lighting and crappy camera.... so if it looks weird to you... thats why :p
|
Now that I can finally drive my GTX around i'm LOVING it. I cant believe someone hasn't jumped on this yet. Especially a GTX that already has all the handling mods done.
Someone buy this car! |
I would love to... if it was in TX I'd do it.
