MI - "Deviate" K20A2 Swapped Miata
10 Attachment(s)
SOLD!! In December I bought "deviate" sight unseen, shipped it from California to Michigan, and haven’t had decent enough weather to drive it until this week. After a lot of back and forth with myself, I've decided to sell it. It’s really fast, extremely well built, and absolutely stunning to behold. However, it just isn't the right car for me right now. It's a little bit more of a racecar than I was hoping. I'm spending so much time on track driving other peoples' cars these days that it just doesn't make sense for me to have a dedicated track car this season. Also, the build on this car is slightly out of my scope as a weekend mechanic. I don't have the time or willingness to wrench on this that I did back in December and would rather it go to someone who does, and will enjoy it. It's a wicked fast, very well built/setup car. Asking what I paid, as-is $15,500 firm - I'm reluctantly eating the $750 I spent shipping it out here from CA. My loss, your gain. High-res photos: https://chrisamosphotography.smugmug...k2L7/i-GkSqbDd I've driven it a few times and burned a quarter tank of gas since buying it in December (still has fuel stabilizer in it). Wheels/tires were stored in my pantry during the cold months. Here's the original build thread from Emilio at 949 Racing https://www.miataturbo.net/general-m...s-k20a2-82901/ Aside from spark plugs and an oil change, it's virtually unchanged from when I bought it here: https://www.miataturbo.net/cars-sale...ck-sale-95322/ This thing is a beast. But remember that it's a track car, and not necessarily a daily-drivable street car. It's loud, things rattle and vibrate (see the video), and it's quick (with ~the same power to weight ratio as a new Mustang GT). Below 6k, the Miata 6-speed shifts perfectly into every gear, but above that it can be temperamental. The suspension and brakes are phenomenal, the depowered steering rack is amazing, light, quick, and full of feedback once you get moving. With my limited knowledge on K motors, the K20A2 sounds and feels healthy. It's still exhibiting signs of wear-in at the most recent oil change - with assembly lube on the drain plug magnet. Blackstone oil analysis showed slightly higher metal contents and silicone levels than normal which I interpret to be synonymous with forged internals and sealers from the recent build. Based on what I've learned by talking to others way more experienced with these engines than I am, everything seems to be in good shape. Other notes: the wipers and horn don't work, I don't think they were connected after the build, also the speedo cable wasn't able to be routed through the trans tunnel, as documented in Emilio's thread. A GPS laptimer will do the trick. It also has a rebuilt title; Deviate always did. Before driving the car this spring I went through and tightened every hose and fitting I could get to, this is one beautiful race car underneath. Here's what it's like to drive, recorded with binaural audio - put on headphones The basics: The motor has an Endyne ported head, Hytech cams, header, custom Hayward Performance-based intake manifold with bottom-feed throttle body all tuned more for flat torque curve than peak power. I can't believe how many times this has changed hands already! The want is strong, but unless you want to trade for a turbo-ready BP Miata w/ associated uninstalled TSE turbo system it can't happen. Good luck with sale!

Hopefully this stays in the SE Michigan area, I'd love to see it in person some time. Unfortunately I'm too far down my current path to just up and switch cars.

Damn....how do I keep missing this car when it comes up for sale! |
Back up for sale!
I hate doing this, but Deviate is for sale: I bought this K20 swapped Miata in April 2018 for $15,500. Since then I've done two autocrosses, one trackday, and a week at the Tail of the Dragon. I did continue the development and upgrades though. I have added probably 2000 total miles in the past 1.5 years. RedMist Automotive converted Deviate to FlexFuel with an Ethanol sensor wired into the HondaData ECU. After Dyno tuning this package makes 216 HP on 93 and 241 HP with E85 on a Dynojet. RedMist also installed a seat back brace. For better track manners I mounted a set of Toyo RR's, 245/40/15. These are BRAND NEW with <20 miles on them. Basically from the tire shop and gas station a few times. I also bought an additional set of 15x10 6UL's (these are getting rare) and mounted a BRAND NEW set of sticker Hoosier A7 245/40/15's. These still have not touched the tarmac and cost me a cool $1104! I also bought a CCP Fabrication 12lbs Hardtop. With shipping, hardware, and Lexan window this ran $900. I had this top color matched for another $300. Both tops and both sets of 15x10's with tires are included for $17,500. I would consider selling one set of wheels/tires separately if the new owner chooses not to take them.
