Default Reagan is alive and living in NH

http://www.unionleader.com/article/2...WS06/703059961

The tobacco tax is up nearly $1 million over estimates, producing $15.1 million for the month. This is the second month the tax has produced more than estimates, after six months of lower-than-expected revenue.

Lawmakers lowered the tax 10 cents a pack last year with the hopes of spurring growth. To date tobacco tax stamps are still about 2.4 percent below last year.

Do you think we're all stupid? Or did you not read the entire article?

-The legislature dropped the tax from $1.78/pack to $1.68/pack - a 5.6% tax cut.
-Year-to-date tobacco tax revenues are down 8.7% from the previous year.
-Year-to-date tobacco tax stamp sales (i.e. cigarette sales) are 2.4% below last year.

So you're going to give another vague out-of-context example since I shot your first one down? (To those not familiar with "google", I believe Brainey is referring to the $0.30/pack hike that NJ instituted in ~2008 that resulted in a net revenue decrease.)

To that I say this: isn't the entire point of cigarette taxes to convince people not to smoke? If you raise a tax on cigarettes, and revenues from that tax drop, people are smoking fewer cigarettes, and the tax is doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

This entire argument is beyond stupid, though, because sales taxes are regressive and income taxes are progressive.

in NJ they were down over 47% in revenue (52.5million in short comings) with only 18% loss in demand.

in RH, while yes they are down overall, it proves revenue increases can happen when you lower taxes.

and no, cigarette taxes aren't to prevent people from smoking, it's to gain revenue for the state. If a state wanted people to stop smoking, they have all the authority to outlaw them.

Wrong.

Add a $5 tax increase to all packs of cigarettes and people will STILL SMOKE THEM.

Its creating revenue, doing its job.

The only way people will quit smoking is on their own. I'm guessing your not a smoker, nor never was, so you have no idea.

Price doesn't matter. Smokers gonna smoke.

Cigarettes are not exempt from the rules of supply and demand. If you think that everyone who smokes today is willing to pay an additional $5/pack to continue smoking them, you're smoking a particular brand of hand-rolled that cannot be purchased in a normal convenience store.

Are higher fuel costs designed to keep people from driving?
Just sayin...

WRONG. EVERY smoker I've ever met would continue their disgusting chain smoking at $20 a pack, they'd just bitch more. Swear to god I'm sick of hearing my friends complain about the price of their cancer sticks when they're smoking 2-3 packs a day, then bitching they don't have enough money for rent.

Far as the libs are concerned they'd be fine with that. Push that piece of ---- government subsidized volt and other POS 'hybrid' cars because they get better fuel mileage. That's the kind of country I want to live in, one where your windup car doesn't have the power to accelerate onto a highway safely without running out of battery.
