Amazon cuts ties with California

For some reason Amazon didn't like the idea of California robbing $200 million of profits from them a year.

I was always under the assumption that federal law trumped state law and the feds said no taxes if no physical presence in the state. Now I see NY, RI and others have state laws doing this and now CA. How can this be? And if this is the case, why can't the states opt out of Obummercare?

I mean it really doesn't make sense to force Amazon to pay state sales taxes. the local businesses selling on Amazon should, but not Amazon; they only facilitate the sale.

that would be like forcing your shopping mall to pay for sales taxes on each purchase made within its walls.

That's unpossible. Everyone knows that raising tax rates always increases received revenue/receipts.

funny you mention that:

This Friday, Vermont’s cigarette tax goes up by 38 cents to $2.62 a pack, a move that backers hope will bring in an additional $4 million a year in revenue.

But there might be some bad news in store for residents of the Green Mountain State hoping the hike would help boost state coffers. Just as Vermont’s tax is set to go up, its neighbor, Live-Free-Or-Die New Hampshire is cutting its cigarette tax by 10 cents a pack.

maybe the fed should wise up to your advice:

also remember some of those in the 49% zone pay negative taxes.

It's really I shame I can't move to Norcal or San Diego. The weather is so perfect.

I'd figure you for a San Fran. man.

A use tax is a type of excise tax levied in the United States. It is assessed upon otherwise "tax free" tangible personal property purchased by a resident of the assessing state for use, storage or consumption of goods in that state (not for resale), regardless of where the purchase took place. The use tax is typically assessed at the same rate as the sales tax that would have been owed (if any) had the same goods been purchased in the state of residence. Use tax applies when sales tax has not been charged. Purchases made over the Internet and out-of-state are the most common type of transactions subject to a use tax.
