Since all cops want to rape and murder civilians, I can only assume that Sheriff Ivey has some kind of ulterior motive / master plan in wanting to arm his citizens. Presumably, his department is engineering a race war, and wish to maximize future casualties in the upcoming violent bloodbath.
acutally it allows him to continue to get fat and collect taxes for a fatter paycheck and belly, while regular citizens deal head-on with violent crime, since police are only responders anyway and that takes away from good jaywalker ticket writing time.

As someone who grew up in a small town in wouthwest FL, I was exposed to this mindset a lot. Like in the movie Red Dawn, where the Russians decide to start WWIII by invading some podunk little down in the midwest only to be repelled by a bunch of teenagers with bows and hunting rifles, lots of folks in hillbilly towns seem to think that they are likely to be targeted by terrorists (presumably those who lack access to a map) and that it's up to them and them alone to fend off the bad guys and save freedom.
It's kind of amusing, in a "look at the kid with down's syndrome up there on stage who thinks that the audience is laughing with her rather than at her" sort of way. They're harmless (in a broad sense), so it really makes no difference.

Dozens of drivers lined up at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex on Saturday morning to turn in guns to the Clearwater Police Department.
"I had two guns in the trunk that I haven't used in probably 25 or 30 years,” said Leonard Feutz. “I thought why don't I get them out of the closet and get rid of them."
Leonard Feutz is one of the many who turned in handguns and rifles in exchange for $50 and $100 Walmart gift cards. The police department’s goal was to create an opportunity for people to get rid of their guns before the weapons ended up in the wrong hands.
"Whether we are able to accept 200 or 27 guns or somewhere in between; one gun sitting around someone's house can be stolen and used in a crime,” said Rob Shaw of the Clearwater Police Department.
Gun sales skyrocketed across the country and here in Florida following the tragedy in San Bernardino, California. However the surge didn’t stop people in the bay area from turning in the guns for gifts.
This year’s event brought in more than 450 weapons. The department collected around 200 weapons at their last buyback event in 2011.
The department issued more than $37,000 in Walmart gift cards at the event.

I mean, it kinda makes me wanna offer up $50 walmart cards to see what sort of expensive *** **** people are willing to trade me for.

Virginia to end concealed carry reciprocity with other states

RICHMOND — Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) plans to announce Tuesday that Virginia will no longer recognize concealed carry handgun permits from 25 states that have reciprocity agreements with the commonwealth.
The move also means Virginians with a history of stalking, drug dealing or inpatient mental-health treatment cannot obtain a permit in a state with comparatively lax laws and carry a handgun legally at home.
Herring said severing the out-of-state agreements can prevent people who may be dangerous or irresponsible from carrying a concealed weapon.
“To me, this is a commonsense step that can help make Virginians and our law enforcement officers safer by ensuring that Virginia’s laws on who can and cannot carry a concealed handgun are applied evenly, consistently, and fairly,” he said in a statement provided to The Washington Post.
“Our General Assembly has already identified who can and cannot conceal handguns in Virginia, and we cannot have that decision undermined by recognizing permits from other states with more permissive standards.”
Herring’s action could intensify a heated debate in the wake of rampant gun violence and cements his position as a liberal defender of gun control as he seeks a second term. A former state senator, Herring has raised the ire of conservatives for supporting same-sex marriage, abortion rights and immigration reform.
Del. Robert B. Bell III (R-Albemarle), a former state prosecutor, is the only Republican challenging him.
Gun rights advocates have criticized Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Herring and other Democrats for insisting on stronger gun laws after mass shootings in which the assailants obtained their weapons legally or suffered from mental illness. In October, McAuliffe banned firearms in state buildings, earning a rebuke from the National Rifle Association.
This year, Herring’s office began a review of reciprocity agreements Virginia has with 30 other states. Attorneys discovered that 25 of those states had concealed handgun permit regulations that were weaker than Virginia’s.
The State Police superintendent accepted Herring’s recommendation to sever agreements with those states, effective Feb. 1, according to Herring’s office.
The states are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Agreements will remain with West Virginia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.
Virginia law lists 20 conditions that would disqualify a person from being issued a concealed carry handgun permit. They include anyone in the United States illegally, subject to a protection from abuse order, or convicted of various criminal charges from drunken driving to assault and battery.
Visitors to Virginia can still obtain a non-resident permit if they meet a separate set of standards set forth in the law.
