People be all protesty 'n **** up in Grand Central Terminal yesterday evening, though. Walked past this mob on my way home:
There were a larger-than-usual number of police officers guarding the main concourse at the time. They mostly just stood around, silently disagreeing with what the protesters were saying but defending their right to say it.
I kinda wished I'd brought my "I can breathe just fine" sign with me.

look, there are only two real ways to make money: rob someone or provide a service in exchange for money. three if you include finding it or inheriting it.
the state employs two variants of the first: 1. taxes, and 2. policing.
In both methods the state uses force or threats in order to take your money. people don't tend to like taxes, but they do generally like police. so they like when their elected officials increase the police force. this in-turn increases profits for the state. Ticketing in small towns accounts for a LARGE portion of the town's total budget. But only in one method can you continue to police more and more, and collect more and more, and no one is the wiser. The taxpayers believe they are getting a greater service by having a larger and larger police force, but the only thing that's really happening is more tickets are simply generating more profits.
This is going to hurt NYC pretty hard when they don't have enough money to pay the salaries of their officer's who aren't bringing home the bacon. [pun intended]

They don't like paying the rent, but they do like having a warm, hobo-free place to sleep at night.
They don't like paying for gas, auto insurance and car loans*, but they do like being able to go places.
They don't like paying the ISP / Cable / Wireless bill, but they do like having unrestricted access to information and entertainment.
I don't think any reasonable person would equate paying for these things to robbery. Likewise, we receive services from the taxes which we pay (roads are paved, fires are extinguished, the military and schools are funded, etc.), all of which differentiate taxation from theft.
Traffic tickets are by their nature intended to be punitive, no different from incarceration or mandatory public service. Criminal punishment is also not robbery by any reasonable definition.
* = if you have a car loan, and you're over, say 23 or so, then you're either financially irresponsible or have generally failed at life.
Not really. They're still dispensing parking tickets at roughly the usual rate (saw a few of them this morning) and that's really the only significant source of LEO-related income here in the city. Remember that the combined taxes here in the city easily exceed the GDP of many states- the police don't contribute to nearly as large a percentage of the total public coffer as in areas with depressed economies, low employment, no significant industrial or commercial base, etc.

KAUMAKANI, Hawaii (PIX11) — A police officer responding to the scene of a car crash struck the victim a second time.
Michael Kocher, 19, was walking along Kaumuali’i Highway in Kaumakani Saturday night when he was struck by a Toyota Corolla, KHON2 reported.
An officer who was responding to the crash then struck the 19-year-old a second time. Kocher was presumed dead at the scene, but taken to Wilcox Hospital, where a doctor formally pronounced him dead.
A makeshift memorial was placed at the site of the crash, where mourners gathered and reminisced about the teen.
“He was our boy,” Hazzard McDougall, a friend of Kocher, told The Garden Island. “He will live forever in our hearts.”
The investigation is ongoing. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week and the officer was placed on administrative leave, Star Advertiser reported.

"Dear Officer(s), You did nothing wrong," the man wrote, in the letter published by police with his father's consent. "You ended the life of a man who was too much of a coward to do it himself."
"I provoked you. I threatened your life as well as the lives of those around me. You were completely within your legal rights to do what you did. You followed protocols. You did everything right," the note continues. "I just want to find peace within myself. I am so sad and I am so lonely. There is no place for me here. Please, don't blame yourself. I used you. I took advantage of you. I am so lost and I am so hopeless. God made a mistake with me. I shouldn't be here. Please, take solace in knowing that the situation was out of your control. You had no other choice."

It took less than a day for one of the more outspoken ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot,’ ‘Black Lives Matter’ protesters to change his tune about police tactics.
Jarrett Maupin has led marches against the Phoenix Police Department for months, most recently over the shooting of an unarmed man by police.
But when Maupin was invited by the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office to undergo police tactical situational training, he came out a changed man.
In one scenario, Maupin, dressed in police garb and carrying a ‘pistol,’ was shot by a car thief/bad guy when the thief put his hands out of view and came up with a gun. In another, Maupin tried to talk two men out of fighting when one man stalked toward him and Maupin shot him:
In the third scenario, a burglar refused to comply when Maupin tried to arrest him and obtain what the bad guy had tucked in his waistband.
As Maupin told Fox 10 Phoenix:
No shots were fired, but there was a knife in the waistband.
Maupin took to Twitter to give the cops props, but fellow protesters didn’t like what he had to say and accused him of going all PC:

Officer Stops Cane-Using Old Lady From Delaying Traffic in LA
In Los Angeles last week, 82-year-old Mayvis Coyle blatantly held up traffic while she shuffled across Foothill Boulevard with her cane. Coyle later claimed she did not have enough time to get across the five-lane boulevard before the light changed. Luckily, an LAPD motorcycle officer was there to deal with the situation -- by giving Coyle a ticket for obstructing traffic.
Finally, a police force that won't coddle the elderly jaywalker.
Another cop might have stopped traffic to make sure Coyle got across the intersection safely, which could have delayed drivers who were probably all on their way somewhere important by dozens of seconds, potentially impacting the already-fragile economy of the San Fernando Valley and so threatening our national security. All for some cane-wielding psychopath.
Coyle did find some other miscreants to back up her story. Edith Krause, 78, claimed she could only make it halfway across before the light changed, and she was in an electric cart. According to the Associated Press reporter, who seems to hate America, a group of high-school students recruited to test the theory were unable to make it across without running during the 20 seconds the light was green.
A spokesman, Sgt. Mike Zaboski, refused to comment and said it would be Coyle's story against that of the heroic "Officer Kelly." "I'd rather not have angry pedestrians," Zaboski said, "but I'd rather have them be alive." Coyle, who described herself as a Cherokee medicine woman, remained ungrateful and not willing to pay her $114 ticket. "I think it's completely outrageous," she said.
Zaboski said that police were "cracking down" on people who improperly cross streets because pedestrian accidents are up. A local councilwoman said she would be looking into the issue.

Perry is one of the attorneys from the Missoula law firm Datsopoulos, MacDonald & Lind who is representing Williams’ mother and fiancee.
In an interview, Perry said the family has a markedly different story of what happened in the hour before Williams was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head.
They deny that the fiancee was ever held hostage or threatened by Williams. They wonder why the man's mother was initially told he committed suicide. And they cannot understand why police did not remove him from the car by tasing, physical force or negotiation.

A Boston police officer has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly assaulting an Uber driver.
The driver for the ride sharing company told police he drove a passenger to the area of E. 2nd Street in South Boston early Sunday morning. That passenger was off-duty officer Michael Doherty, 40, of South Boston.
According to the driver, when he reached the destination, Doherty accused the driver of trying to drop him off at the wrong location. Doherty then allegedly yelled and hit the driver.
When the driver got out of the car, Doherty got into the front seat and drove off, the driver told police.
Police say a passing motorist helped the driver follow Doherty until he stopped the car and fled.
Doherty, who has been on the force for 16 years, was arrested at his home Sunday and charged with Assault & Battery and Using a Motor Vehicle without Authority.
A spokesperson for Uber told WBZ-TV that Doherty has been permanently blocked as a rider.

The hunt for a bicyclist who wasn't using a light, leads to a dog being shot in its own yard.

A simple traffic stop involving a bicycle in Lehigh Acres led to a Lee County deputy firing off a shot to protect one of his own.
It happened near Gilbert Avenue just west of Gunnery Road.
Deputies tell us they attempted to stop a suspect on a bicycle outside of the Dollar General store on Gunnery Road for riding without a light. That's when the suspect ran away from deputies.
A helicopter and K9 unit were called in to help search for the suspect. While tracking the suspect in a wooded area, a K9 unit was attacked by an unleashed Pit bull. That's when a deputy in pursuit shot the Pit bull.
We spoke to the Pit bull's owner, Michael Rivera. Rivers says the entire incident happened on his property -- which he says has an invisible fence system.
The Pit bull is receiving treatment from animal control. River tells us his dog isn't doing well. The K9 is expected to be okay.
The suspect is still on the run. No description has been given to us at this time.

Christopher Allen Carson, 30, pleaded guilty to a felony count of criminal solicitation, a count of contributing to delinquency of a minor and one count of exposing his ***** to a child. Carson also pleaded guilty to two counts of loaning pornographic videos to a child.
Judge Herman A. Whisenant Jr. accepted Carson’s pleas as part of a bargain on the day Carson was to face a jury trial. Carson was originally charged with forcible sodomy, aggressive sexual battery and indecent liberties with a child.
Whisenant recommended a sentence of nine years in prison, all but 30 days of which to be suspended, and two years of probation. As part of the plea agreement, Carson does not have to register as a sex offender. Also as part of the agreement, two additional active charges of forcible sodomy and indecent liberties with a child will be dropped.

You wanna know why cops hate cameras?
The officer was rushed to Lutheran Trauma Center with a police escort and chopper overhead. Too bad his story was he fell out of the car... Great police work though, they closed the street for a few hours while they "investigated". Must be awesome being on NYPD, getting paid tons of cash for being pretty much worthless.

UPDATE: Victoria police officer who Tased 76-year-old man fired after investigation | News - Home
We first told you about the story and the dash cam video back in December. The video shows Officer Nathanial Robinson, of the Victoria Police Department, arresting Pete Vasquez on Dec. 11 for displaying an expired inspection sticker. But in the process, Robinson suddenly throws Vasquez onto the hood of his police car, then tackles the elderly man to the ground and shoots him with a Taser gun twice.
Vasquez was taken to the hospital, where he was released after a medical evaluation.
Victoria Police Chief Jeff Craig placed Robinson on administrative leave and ordered two separate investigations: a criminal investigation conducted by the Texas Rangers and an internal administrative investigation conducted by the Victoria Police Department's Internal Affairs Division.
On Monday, Craig announced the outcome of the internal investigation, saying Robinson had violated the department's conduct policy, use of force policy and arrest without a warrant policy.
Craig said Robinson was terminated.
