Los Angeles police shot and critically wounded a man after he raised his arm, wrapped in a towel, toward officers Friday in Los Feliz, police said.

Police said officers thought the man had a gun, but he turned out to be unarmed.

The man flagged down officers about 6:35 p.m. at Los Feliz Boulevard and Tica Drive south of Griffith Park, according to a police account.

"This person extended an arm wrapped in a towel. The officer exited the vehicle and said, 'Drop the gun, drop the gun,'" LAPD Lt. John Jenal said.

Then at least one officer shot the man, officials say. He was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

The man was standing on the side of the road, Smith said, when he called out to the officers: "Police, police."

Smith said investigators would explore all possibilities, including whether the man needed some type of help from police. He said investigators would also look into the man's background to see if there were any indications the shooting was an attempted "suicide by cop."

A former corrections officer has received a 20-year prison sentence for a violent 2011 home invasion in which he and two other men beat and robbed a suburban Philadelphia business owner.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old Tyreek Styles was sentenced Thursday. A jury convicted the Philadelphia man in September 2014 of conspiracy, robbery and using a firearm during a violent crime.

Prosecutors say Styles and two other men waited for an Upper Darby business owner to come home in December 2011 and brutally beat him in his front yard. The men made their way into the home and forced the victim's family to give them money at gunpoint.

Styles was a corrections officer at Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Philadelphia at the time of the robbery.

"Sheriff Arpaio, hear me well. Thank you, but no thank you."

Walton and others say it's offensive that Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office, which has been ordered by a federal judge to stop profiling Latinos, will now send posse members to patrol predominantly African-American churches. Their frustration is also directed at the Reverend Jarrett Maupin, whom they accuse of exploiting the attack in Charleston by calling for more security.

"We will not allow any more lives that are taken in Arizona or the nation to be propagated by these publicity stunts and so we ask you to stop and to stand down," said the Rev. Warren Stewart of the Church of the Remnant in Phoenix.

The response from Rev. Maupin was, "We are exercising our God-given common sense."

Less than a mile away, Rev. Maupin, who stood with Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Friday when he announced the volunteer posse patrols, stood beside Deon Alexander 24 hours later. The Phoenix resident is the grand-nephew of Susie Jackson, the oldest victim in the Charleston church murders.

"We are all devastated," Alexander told reporters.

He expressed appreciation for the sheriff's patrols and says he understands they won't last forever, "You do have these copycats around here and they do try to imitate what they see on TV. They try to imitate what they see on the Internet. They try to imitate thing they hear in music, you know. So definitely until tomorrow, yes, maybe until the next Sunday, at least until things feel like they're starting to die down."

While Maupin says the threat is real, his critics say they are protected by God and have confidence in the Phoenix Police Department.

We asked Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office to respond to the critics who don't want the patrols, but did not hear back.

Earlier this week, Southern California media reported that a Long Beach police officer was shot by a suspect on Saturday evening.

Turns out, the bullet came from his own partner’s weapon.

To make this incident of cop-on-cop violence even more outrageous, the suspect was charged with a felony complaint that specifically states that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, which caused “great bodily injury” to the officer.
According to reports, three Long Beach officers arrived at an apartment complex Saturday evening for a report of a disturbance.

Police claim the suspect, 31-year-old Eric Arroyo, began shooting at the yet-to-be named officers as soon as they arrived and that one officer was hit, prompting his partner to return fire.

Despite being wounded, police claim Arroyo attempted to flee the scene and resist arrest, prompting them to use a “taser-like device” on him.

On Thursday, police admitted their error and announced that the officer had been shot by his partner during what was described by a witness as a “hail of gunfire,” to CBS Los Angeles.

On Wednesday, Arroyo’s bail was set at $3 million after being charged with two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and two counts of assault with a firearm upon a peace officer. All four charges are felonies.

As of Thursday evening, despite the new information, none of the charges against Arroyo have been rescinded. He remains imprisoned and his next court date is set for June 19.

If the charges against him are not changed, he faces a maximum sentence of 80 years in state prison for the cop-on-cop shooting.

NBC Los Angeles selectively edited a video interview of a witness to a police shooting to better fit the police narrative about the killing of an unarmed college student last week.

Now friends and family of the victim, Feras Morad, who was shot and killed by Long Beach police on Wednesday, are putting the news station on blast through social media.

The witness told NBC that Murad was slowly shuffling towards the officer with his hands up, but what NBC aired was that the bloody and injured man was “aggressively” moving towards the officer. The video is posted below. It is not the first time that NBC Los Angeles proved to be a mouthpiece for local police departments.

Morad, a nationally-ranked debate competitor and student at Moorpark College, had told his family he was going to Long Beach to study for a debate. The student, with a 3.9 GPA, reportedly ingested mushrooms with his friends – something his family says is out of character.

Experiencing an extreme reaction to the hallucinogen, Morad reportedly fell out of a second story window and his friends called 911 for help.

According to the police report, the officers claim that when they arrived he began to advance towards the officers despite orders to stop. His family and friends maintain that he was not wearing a shirt and was unarmed. One officer, who has yet to be identified, opened fire shooting Morad an unknown number of times, despite his friends repeatedly screaming at the officers that their friend did not have a weapon.

Family and friends of 20-year-old Morad are speaking out and claiming that they were not contacted by the Long Beach Police Department, the hospital or the coroners office at any time to be informed that their loved one was killed.

His sister told KTLA that she only learned of his passing through a Facebook post, confirmed after she frantically called his friends two days later.

The family is now hiring an attorney to file a lawsuit against the department for their deadly reaction to a medical emergency.

His sister and friends have also started a campaign called #Justice4Feras, where people are encouraged to write “unarmed, please cuff me” across their arms and a protest is scheduled for 1 pm on June 27 in Long Beach.

Nowata, OK - There is new video of Sunday's car chase involving Owasso and Nowata Police. The suspect led police on a chase from North Tulsa to Nowata.

The video is from a Nowata Officer's dash-cam. You can see an Owasso officer use what appears to be the butt of his gun to hit the driver through the window of his truck.The suspect is pulled from the truck to the ground and the same officer can be seen hitting the driver with his gun again.

Owasso Police have not identified the officer in the video, but say one of their officer's is on leave pending the investigation. He was just reinstated to the department in the fall after being fired for using excessive force back in 2011.

Authorities say they want to give the officers a chance to explain their actions before any measures are taken.

Mr Caton and three mates were driving around the Southern Tablelands town of Queanbeyan in his green Commodore in search of beer to restock their work Christmas party when they were pulled over by three police hunting for the perpetrators of a violent home invasion.

"One of the cops shouted 'put your hands outside the windows! Have you got any weapons in the car?'" he says of the December 2013 incident.

The 31-year-old removalist produced a green, plastic dinosaur which his daughter had left in the back seat and declared "No weapons, but I've got a big dinosaur ... roaaaar!".

According to Mr Caton, Senior Constable Todd Finnegan pulled him from the car, forced him onto the gravel footpath and roughly handcuffed him.

In sworn statements and oral evidence before Queanbeyan local court, Constables Hicks and Finnegan said they initially stopped the car because they had been told those responsible for the home invasion had been driving a green Commodore.

They said Mr Caton had been forced to the ground and handcuffed not because he was brandishing a plastic dinosaur but because he had been "rummaging around in his pockets… possibly for a weapon".

Mr Antram had charged Constable Finnegan, the two male officers claimed, with Constable Hicks intervening just in time.

But their own colleague, Constable Litchfield, provided a very different version of events, effectively blowing the whistle on her colleagues.

She said that, far from charging at Constable Finnegan, Adam Antram had being standing compliantly next to her.

On April 28 this year, as two senior Inspectors from her Local Area Command sat watching from the back of the courtroom, Constable Litchfield gave emotional testimony that her colleague's statements were false.

"That wasn't true?" counsel for Mr Caton, Steven Boland asked the officer in relation to Hicks and Finnegan's assault claims against Mr Caton and his mates.

"That's correct, it didn't happen," Constable Litchfield said.

"And you understand that is a deeply serious thing to say about a fellow police officer?" Mr Boland continued.

"Yes, I do," the witness replied.

Constable Litchfield broke down as she described the "tense and horrible" atmosphere allegedly perpetuated by the other two constables since she had spoken out.

"I've been…certain…certain amount excluded and spoken badly about and have heard things spoken about me behind my back. Senior Constable Finnegan won't speak to me at all – actually won't even look at me."

Following a brief adjournment in the middle of Constable Litchfield's evidence, the Police Prosecutor in the case, Senior Sergeant Matthew Zalunardo, withdrew the charges of assaulting police against both the accused.

Lawyers for Mr Caton and Mr Antram are now seeking an order that the NSW Police pay all of its legal costs in the matter, a bill that will exceed $50,000.

"Former Detective Joe Crystal sat at a back table in Martin’s West Ballroom last Thursday, scanning the room filled with police officers for any friends he still had left.

Under glowing chandeliers, more than 500 law enforcement officials and their families mingled prior to an awards ceremony honoring Baltimore’s finest. Crystal, 34, was one of the people up for an award, though few had expected him to show. He was a pariah. He had informed on two other cops who engaged in police brutality. And it had cost him his livelihood.

Earlier that day, Crystal showed off the house he was staying in while in town for the ceremony. He ran his hand over the marble surface of a bar he had made himself."

A Gold Coast police officer who leaked video footage of his colleagues assaulting a handcuffed man could face charges and jail time, civil libertarians say.

Australian Council for Civil Liberties president Terry O'Gorman says the case goes to the heart of the risks whistleblowers take.

He has called on Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller to take a personal interest in the case if charges are laid, and he says all Queenslanders should be watching the case closely.

"Queenslanders will say what sort of a system have we got where a video shows a number of police belting the hell out of a bloke. They don't get charged, but the officer who leaks the video to the media gets charged," Mr O'Gorman told the ABC.

He said the assault had cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in a payout to the victim.

The leaked video footage was published by media outlets in early 2012.

It showed a 21-year-old man being slammed face first into a concrete floor before being hit by officers using their knees, elbows and fists.

It showed the man again being punched after being put in the back of a police van, and a senior officer throwing a bucket of water on the concrete to wash away the man's blood.

At the time, Noa Begic said he was arrested after a night out in Surfers Paradise and was assaulted repeatedly on the drive to the local police station and then later in the basement.

"They were making racist comments about me and then when we ended up in that basement I knew there was more on the way," he said.

Public nuisance charges against Begic were dropped after then-Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson intervened.

The officers filmed carrying out the assault were subject to an internal police investigation, with two facing disciplinary action.

He was just shy of 13-years-old when it happened, but by the time he turned 18, he took the Albuquerque Police Department to court for a wrongful arrest that happened when he was in middle school.

The man filed suit against the city of Albuquerque and several members of the police department for an unjust arrest that happened back on December 12, 2008.

That’s when police officer D. Hensley, a school resource officer at Grant Middle School, placed 8th grader Paul Castenada under arrest, all for reporting to class when he had an in-school suspension.

In a complaint filed Jan 2 of last year, it states that Barbara Tate, Castenada’s teacher, said that she forgot to remind him about in-school suspension. He had severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and he was well-known to forget things.

Remember, this was not an at-home suspension. He was only supposed to report to the office for in-school suspension. But Hensley arrested Castenada anyway.

Castenada says he is still unaware that he actually had an in-school suspension that day. He says he does not remember being told about it, but was instead threatened with it, according his attorney Joe Kennedy, of The Kennedy Law Firm.

“This is maybe the worst incident I’ve seen. This is a situation where it is clearly a school issue” rather than a police matter, Kennedy explained.

Castenada is not simply suing the city, but has directly filed suit against Hensley, Sgt. Donny Keith and former Police Chief Ray Schultz.

Why all of those officers? Kennedy says that Keith and Schultz had the obligation to provide Hensley with better training about when it is alright to arrest a child.

Castenada said that this arrest let him to eventually drop out and earn his G.E.D.

Hensley wrote in the arrest report that skipping in-school suspension “not only interrupts the ISS class, it interferes with the educational process because the backlog created by the failure to appear students limits the effectiveness of the program,” Hensley claimed.

Kalispell police evacuated a casino Friday afternoon after a call about a possible bomb device at the Best Bet Casino.

Senior Sgt. Allen Bardwell said it started at 2:30 p.m. when a casino employee called 911.
The caller described a suspicious-looking metal cylinder with computer chips attached to it laying in the rocks next to the building.

Bardwell said when KPD, the Kalispell Fire Department, and disaster team arrived they immediately closed the business.

They set up a perimeter around the parking lot and evacuated a half dozen people.

"It took us probably 30 to 45 minutes making calls and looking on the internet. We were able to identify the device as a tool or part of an amplifier to a sound system," Bardwell said.

He added that the investigation went smoothly and there were no threats to surrounding areas.

An Illinois police sergeant is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly used a squad car to deliver marijuana while on duty.

Sgt. Sergio Fuentes, 41, of Aurora, Ill., was charged with felonious possession of a controlled substance and official misconduct according to the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team (Tri-DENT), reports Mike Hanley at the Sun Times Media Wire.

Police said Fuentes on Friday delivered marijuana to a person who was informing for the narcotics team. Sgt. Fuentes was on duty at the time of the alleged delivery, and drove his Earlville, Illinois police squad car.

​Fuentes was arrested a short time later at the Earlville police station.

After the arrest, officers found more pot in Fuentes' personal car, then recovered a controlled drug, Clonazepam, a prescription muscle relaxer, from his personal duty bag, when his squad car was searched at the request of Earlville Police Chief Joe Plumlee.

Tri-DENT spokesman Zach Milus told Charles Stanley at mywebtimes.com that a single pill of Clonazepam was found, for which Fuentes did not have a prescription.

Fuentes was taken to the county jail after LaSalle County State's Attorney Brian Towne approved the charges. Fuentes posted $7,500 bond and was released from jail, with his next court hearing set for Thursday.

Fuentes has been suspended without pay, according to Earlville Mayor Mike Hall. At the advice of the city's attorneys, Fuentes' medical benefits remain in place for the time being, according to the mayor.

"As a city, obviously we're very disappointed," Hall said Monday. "We're shocked."

Fuentes had been with the Earlville Police Department almost three years, according to Chief Plumlee, and was generally thought to be doing a good job, Mayor Hall said.

The police sergeant hurt his knee on the job and had been out on workman's compensation, returning a few months ago.

Official misconduct carries a possible prison sentence of up to five years. Fuentes could also get up to three years on the marijuana charges.

A huge majority of the more than 5,600 deaths on the map are from gunshots, which is hardly surprising given that guns are so deadly compared to other tools used by police. There are also a lot of noticeable fatalities from vehicle crashes, stun guns, and asphyxiations. In some cases, people died from stab wounds, medical emergencies, and what’s called “suicide by cop,” when someone commits suicide by baiting a police officer into using deadly force.

After refusing to consent to an unreasonable request to search all of our bags and coolers, we were ejected from the park, and all other County Parks, for 1 year, for not complying with the search. Again,we were stopped while trying to leave the park. Is that how America works? I was threatened by the Clackamas County sheriff's deputy with being arrested if I still would not comply with the illegal search. Is that how America works?
