"And you better hope it works for you too". I liked that short video, it makes sense. Brain's little money throwin around video makes sense too, cause it's a prime example of a talentless rap video. They have money to throw around cause they get the support of idiot America who buys into their bullshit cause they think it's "good music". Same reason why football players get paid millions, same reason why One Big Assed Mistake America was elected president.

Braineack 04-08-2010 10:47 AM

football players get paid well because of the dedication/time/effort/skill they put into the game and what they bring in for the franchise; they are deserving of their paycheck. Most anyone is deserving of their paycheck if that happens to be the agreement between the two honestly. Would a homeless dude that can't play football or encourage fans to buy tickets be more deserving of a 14 million dollar contract?

not a good comparable; talk more about how unions are fail.

thirdgen 04-08-2010 11:04 AM

So it has nothing to do with the ticket prices or the advertisements or all the merchandise that fans can buy with a certain players name? Or the fact that if a certain player of popularity signs something, it's worth a certain amount of money? I like to think of football as a career. The players get paid a lot, because they are contracted to perform in physically demanding ways. You can't lie to me though and tell me that instead if getting $100,000 a year vs a million a year, isn't cause of fan support. Think of the fans as customers. If you have a company with a whole country of customers, you'll make a killing of profit. Think of football as a car company without the recalls or bailouts.

Fan will not buy tickets/merchandise if your team sucks (see Nationals and/or Redskins).
Advertisers will not sponsor your stadium or advertise with you if your team sucks.

I dunno what you are arguing...

Apparently nothing.

Braineack 04-08-2010 11:53 AM

Star players make teams vast sums of money. They are therefore worth large sums of money. That simple.

Now an ethical argument maybe could get made that we are just such a messed up society because we pay a football player 8.2 million a year yet we (supposedly) pay teachers so little. But the funny thing there is that all that cash moving around (even the players paycheck itself) creates a ton of jobs which in turn allow people to contribute to society in a variety of ways.

So yeah it would be just skippy if we paid the best, most dedicated teachers 8.2 million and everyone got really pumped about how well they convey concepts (and in the modern system make kids feel really snuggly-happy-good about being themselfs). But the system we have now is not as be-fucked as it appears at first blush.

I'm sure there are some teachers that make bank, they just don't work for public schools. they do however work for a pension that I pay for...

Sparetire 04-08-2010 10:02 PM

Bank is a relative terms (...sorta...). As I understand it around here (where pay is often a bit lower than comparable places) teachers start around 35-40 with a bachelors and that pay goes up steadily to about 60 over the course of 10 years or so if you get a masters, for which you can get some pretty sweet financial aid. To me, that's a lot of money. I was not at all focused on a career and basically a slacker untill recently and I have choosen one that likely wont pay well (non-profit disaster releif if this job market improves). To someone like say my freind who just finished up law school, thats peanuts. But IMHO starting at 40K somewhere in the vicinity of your mid 20s with a job that is no-doubt tough, yet runs more or less 9 weeks a year is a pretty darn good gig. I have never really understood complaints about teacher pay, though I dont know much about it beyond this area.
