90% of the cops I've ran into are the "look at ma piece yo" napoleon complex fuck head that is just looking for an occasion to show off.

Thing is with the general cop bashing is that most of us only meet the asshole cops...on an asshole day...at a moment they're given leeway to be an asshole.
Now when someone was breaking into your car and you chased them off and the Sheriff's Deputy shows up, I've met some pretty nice, stand-up cops that way. Don't form your perception of cops overall based on the ones you basically invite to pull you over or harass you otherwise (drunk in public etc.). I also personally know a few guys that became LEOs out of a genuine desire to help others and make the world a little safer for us regular Joes*. *note that this does not include Mr. Perez as he is far from ordinary. I would use the term extraordinary if it did not fall as short of describing him as the Space Shuttle falls short of being a viable intergalactic mode of transport or orbital defense system. |
The 2-pronged problem is:
1) Bad laws and badly written laws (probably 90%) ... i.e. unconstitutional and overly broad or vaguely written laws 2) Cops that enforce laws which they know are bad laws (the "Nuremberg defense" aka "I'm just doing my job"), or cops who don't know any better -- this is probably 99% of them. Maybe 50% are dicks while they enforce said laws. |

"Good morning, citizen. We see that someone has broken into your vehicle but that you chased them away. We could pretend to dust for fingerprints and act like we will do something to find them, but let's be honest. There is virtually no chance we will actually locate the perpetrators and you'll just end up with a car covered in fine charcoal dust." |

Your local police department: When seconds count, they are only minutes away. ;)

FTFY. You wouldn't want people to think that shit is dumb. |
I'd say 80% of my experience with law enforcement has been satisfactory. Only once or twice have I dealt with a cop that was overly aggressive and in your face for no reason. Like mgeoffriau said, it's not always about the officers themselves, but the laws they have to enforce. I'm about to have a law enforcement experience right now. On my way to court to finally settle this shit that has been ongoing for the last 2 or 3 months with the tag ticket and FTA.
