Although I'm skeptical I will atleast give them credit for trying something new and continuing to evaluate the results. At the elementary school age reading and language skills are the most important to develop because they provide the basis for communication and understanding which helps a student excel in all areas of learning. There may be some merit in this experiment. The lack of any math related practice at home concerns me though.

Right on. Better than teaching creationism as science and cutting critical thinking from the curriculum.

I wish I didn't have any homework as a kid. I would have gotten straight As. Instead I got straight Cs.

I did almost no homework as a child. I made every excuse in the book, and got away with it most times. But, I read voraciously, and still do. I was well versed in history before we got that far in school, because I had already read something on it. My test scores were always exemplary, so I got usually got away with the no homework thing all through high school.

The only downside was math, because homework is practice, and I think you need to practice it to be good at it.

I wish I did homework as a kid. I'd have gone to a real school and not art school.

I like this idea and I am not saying it to be contrary. Reading a book instead of doing homework could be good for creativity. The student body has a large quotient of ESOL students and reading could help there too.

In a material sense, creativity is generally vastly undervalued by society. The reality is that many professional jobs require good amounts of creativity while menial/unskilled labor jobs do not. Also creativity helps your life from being fuckying boring.

This is all assuming that the kids even read the books at all. Then again if they are sucking at school they're probably not doing homework either.

And. FWIW I always did my homework on the bus or 5 minutes before it was due. School. Puke.

that's all we need, is more people #occupying parent's basements.

this is what happens when you justify failure; coincidentally, it's the problem with communism.

I had this one teacher in junior high that had a habit of leaving folders and stuff unattended on her desk. I got into a bad habit of ignoring deadlines for papers and projects. At some point, a day or two later when I'd finally finished my work, I'd slip it into a random folder on her desk when she wasn't looking. At some point, she'd come to me to say that she didn't receive my paper on time, and I'd say, "But I'm SURE I turned it in on time! I worked really hard to make sure it was done. Can you please check again and see if it got lost in your other papers?"

I'm not proud of this.

lol @ 'real schools' ... they're a great way to make tax exempt income off uninspired youth.

bachelors in fine arts > design focus > medical field > triple digit income

...and to think all my friends who went to 'reputable business schools' and scoffed at me 'drawing cocks' (figure drawing for you uninformed) make equal or less yet are paying for 200K worth of college debt (my tuition was 7K a year ... yay for living in the only state with a public art school).
