Obama: ATMs Contribute To Unemployment For Eliminating Tellers

"The other thing that happened though, this goes to the point you were just making, is there are some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers," President Obama said about unemployment in an interview with NBC's Ann Curry.

Obama claims ATMs and kiosks at airports have eliminated some jobs.

"If you see it when you go to a bank you use the ATM, you don't go to a bank teller. Or you go to the airport and you use a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate," he said.

Obama: Robots can pump jobs into the economy

Technological innovations such as robots can help pump jobs into the economy, Barack Obama said this morning.

The President said such technology can spur growth in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

In his radio and Internet address today, Mr Obama echoed a plan he unveiled Friday in Pittsburgh to join the federal government, universities and corporations and re-ignite American manufacturing with an emphasis on cutting-edge research and new technologies.

'Their mission is to come up with a way to get ideas from the drawing board to the manufacturing floor to the marketplace as swiftly as possible, which will help create quality jobs, and make our businesses more competitive,' he said in his address.

The speech was taped Friday during the President's visit to Carnegie Mellon University, where he saw a display of mini-robots that explore water and sewer pipes.

He also marvelled at robots that can defuse a bomb, mow a lawn, even scrape old paint.

I guess bank tellers and airport kiosk workers are more valuable than painters and landscapers.

Nope.

Yeah, because you don't need people to design, build, maintain, or repair ATMs or airport kiosks.

Oh, Obama.

*facepalm*

Im not sure why its so hard for people to comprehend that just about anything that makes your life easier and products cheaper is a good thing, even if it means that jobs are replaced by machines.

Its just like people bitching about outsourcing. Yes, Americans have lost jobs to it, but overall we are better off because it makes things cheaper.

ATMs don’t destroy jobs. Politicians who treat the country like an ATM destroy jobs.
