Default The warrior police cat is out of control.

Not a huge thing, but I found this interesting. Supreme court rules that police cannot extend a traffic stop beyond the amount of time required to resolve the original intent of the stop. So if they pull you over for a tail light out, they can't make you wait around for a drug sniffing dog without whatever probable cause they would need to search the vehicle anyway. If I understand right, that is.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/22/us...fic-stops.html

This part seems a little sketchy: In a separate dissent, Justice Alito added that much will now turn on the order in which police officers complete their tasks during traffic stops. Issuing a ticket or warning, he said, will now become the last step.

if you think this will actually stop the practice, you havent seen the warrior cop thread.

What alito is suggesting is that cops will fish first and tend to the actual reason for the stop second, in order not to "prolong".

he also said the smell of air fresheners was reasonable suspicion...

It's true, I don't believe this decision will make any difference in whether or not they bring the dog.

I'll be honest, I haven't read the warrior cop thread in a while. I think I skimmed it a while ago, but I don't remember.

youll just start seeing every cop in hot-bed areas start working with dogs, and every stop will have a sniff as part of standard procedure as to not prolong the unrelated stop.

the cop warrior thread got so big with so much crap and banter that I pretty much gave up following

I do agree though: this will accomplish nothing, because they can still be honey badger and just probable cause everything

Ultimately none of this matters. They will do what they want, when they want, however they want, because they can.

I can definitely see that happening, or at least having some (more?) dedicated "roaming dog" cruisers so when cop A pulls you over for speeding and sees that you have dreadlocks and and a pot leaf keychain, he can radio back to officer B with the dog and have him there before he even finishes writing the speeding ticket.

Sidebar:

Every day, I commute through Grand Central Terminal.

If you've never been there, you'll have to take my word for the fact that it's pretty Grand, and you can use Google Maps to verify that it is, in fact, quite Central.

There are typically a much higher concentration of law enforcement officers (MTA Police, NYPD, NY State, and US Army) lounging about the main concourse than is typical of most places. And a number of very serious-looking dogs are also everpresent.

Now, on a typical evening, I'm usually pulling a Brad Pitt as I walk through the terminal on my way to my train. Usually it's just a slice of 99˘ pizza from one of the many Manhattan-based venues which provide this luxury, though if it's late then I'll often have grabbed a proper dinner and be carrying it in a brown paper bag. Pad Thai is a common indulgence, though I sometimes go for the curried goat.

I'm always slightly self-conscious about the fact of walking right past a number of police dogs as they sit there silently contemplating me and the pungent aromas wafting from my person and effects.

And yet none of them have ever lunged forward and attacked me. Quite impressive.

Actual pictures of dogs doing dog-stuff at GCT:

I guess you* could say that I'm being subjected to unreasonable searches several times each day as part of my ordinary commute.

* = Braineack, specifically.

i mean they might as well use ducks and chickens. a k-9 handlers can say a dog farted and that's an alert to whether your drivers license is valid or not.

I was going to guess that cats are crooked and more likely to smuggle drugs themselves than help detect criminals? Cat trained to smuggle drugs into prison

In former Soviet Union, cat polices you!

Stavropol is a city in the south-western corner of Russia, not far from the Caspian Sea. On the outskirts of the city, on the road leading to Moscow, is a police checkpoint where vehicles were stopped to check for smugglers in the battle against the illegal trade in caviar, and also salmon. The Caspian provides 90 per cent of the world's caviar, but sturgeon are seriously threatened by the illegal poaching of their eggs, with prime caviar fetching high prices in Moscow and other large cities, and up to 2000 US dollars a kilogram (2.2 pounds) in the United States.

During 2002 a stray male kitten wandered into the checkpoint, and was adopted by the policemen, who fed him on scraps from the material they confiscated. They named him Rusik, and found that he had an extraordinary sense of smell and could detect the location of fish or fish products with great accuracy. So they spent a considerable amount of time training him to become their 'sniffer cat', replacing the former employee, a dog. After about a year, Rusik duly went on duty performing spot checks on vehicles and travellers, meeting with considerable success and finding caviar no matter how ingeniously it was hidden. 'He finds the caviar in any hiding place,' a spokesman said.

However, in so doing he clearly upset the smugglers, and it is possible that led to his downfall. On 12 July 2003, after only a few days' work, he was run over by a car and killed. Some Russian media suggested it was a deliberate act, a 'revenge killing', saying that the car moved forward over him as he was about to detect some hidden salmon and that the car responsible had been stopped on a previous occasion and its owners found to be smuggling. However, a St Petersburg Times report said that after ensuring that a bus was free of illegally harvested seafood, Rusik had jumped lightly to the ground, only to be hit by a car. 'It was a sad accident,' said a police spokesman.

Thus ended Rusik's short career. His colleagues in the police had come to regard him as a valuable member of their team and were deeply saddened by his death. They said he had not died in vain, though, as he had shown the valuable contribution that cats could bring to law enforcement. They were talking of training another cat or cats to take over, but if they ever did we have not heard about it. There was also talk of a plaque to honour the cat who died in the line of duty, but again we do not know whether that came to fruition.

This thread is now about police cats:
KYOTO’S POLICE CAT FIGHTS CRIME WITH CUDDLES

In Kyoto, Japan, the long arm of the law ends in a paw

There’s a police officer in Kyoto Japan, who is getting paid for his crime fighting skills… in kibble and tuna.

Say hello to officer Iemon(ee-eh-mon) aka the first cat to ever become a police officer in Japan.

Prior to joining the police force, Iemon was a stray, at the age of two-weeks, that wandered the streets of Kyoto, Japan. Until one day, he was discovered by Police Sergeant Yamada’s wife and the local police station eventually took him in and was made an honorary member of the Yoro Station. Ever since that day, he became a great asset in the fight against crime in Kyoto. Iemon has also brightened the lives of the people that work at the station. Kyoto's Police Cat Rats Out Criminals police cat Kyoto's Police Cat Fights Crime With Cuddles Kyotos Police Cat Rats Out Criminals3

Just like any other officer, Iemon wears his own uniform when he is on duty. As a true believer of justice, Iemon cannot stand jailbirds — now you know the truth behind those claw marks on the bodies of prisoners.

Besides keeping the workers happy, Officer Iemon operates in a small town in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, which has a population made up of mostly elderly folks, who are frequently targeted by telephone scammers who trick them into wiring over funds.

He travels with other officers when they are investigating situations that involve suspicious phone calls. Sgt. Yamada thought it would be a good idea to bring Iemon along on his investigations to help the victims feel more at ease, and had his wife make the cat a very official looking uniform for the job.

This comes to show you that sometimes the key to taking down crime is to have a cute feline on reserve for any kind of crisis. You are a hero to all cats everywhere, Iemon. Keep up the good work!

In the late 1960s, the CIA created a cybernetic spy cat.

No bullshit.

Acoustic Kitty was a CIA project launched by the Directorate of Science & Technology in the 1960s they intended to use cats to spy on the Kremlin and Soviet embassies. In a hour-long procedure a veterinary surgeon implanted a microphone in the cats ear canal, a small radio transmitter at the base of it's skull and a thin wire into it's long fur. This would allow the cats to innocuously record and transmit sound from their surroundings. Due to problems with distraction, the cat's sense of hunger had to be addressed in another operation. "Victor Marchetti, a former CIA officer, said Project Acoustic Kitty, which cost about $20 million."

The first Acoustic Kitty mission was to eavesdrop on two men in a park outside the Soviet compound on Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, D.C. The cat was released nearby, but was hit and killed by a taxi almost immediately. However, this was disputed in 2013 by Robert Wallace, a former Director of the CIA's Office of Technical Service, who said that the project was abandoned due to the difficulty of training the cat to behave as required, and "the equipment was taken out of the cat; the cat was re-sewn for a second time, and lived a long and happy life afterwards". Subsequent tests also failed. Shortly thereafter the project was considered a failure and declared to be a total loss.

The project was cancelled in 1967. A closing memorandum said that the CIA researchers believed that they could train cats to move short distances, but that "the environmental and security factors in using this technique in a real foreign situation force us to conclude that for our (intelligence) purposes, it would not be practical." The project was disclosed in 2001, when some CIA documents were declassified.
