The taxi drivers scared the **** out of me in NYC. BUT, they got where I needed to go very quickly. Much better than driving in DC.

Yeah, but then you don't get to own a fun/modified car. That would be quite a change for me having had something fun/able to tinker with all 18 years of having a drivers license.

It's definitely exciting. But I rarely use taxi's in NYC.

I saw no better way to get to point A to point B in the shortest amount of time.

'Global climate emergency' declared after jet stream crosses equator | Inhabitat - Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

A prominent climate scientist has declared a “global climate emergency” after observing the jet stream in the Northern Hemisphere crossing the equator and mixing with the jet stream in the Southern Hemisphere. Paul Beckwith, a geography professor at the University of Ottawa, wrote in a blog postthat this behavior is new and “indicates that climate system mayhem is ongoing.” If the merging of the jet streams continues, it could disrupt the seasons, threatening the food supply chain and causing “massive geopolitical unrest.”

In a
, Beckwith explained that the warming Arctic from man-made climate changeis slowing down the jet stream and making it wavier. He pointed out a few spots where the jet streams have merged, pinpointing the exact time when they touched each other as June 27 at 11 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Beckwith said we’ve lost the separation between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere jet streams and that if the trend continues it could lead to the equalization of the entire global temperature, reducing seasonality.

Related: The Arctic is greening and scientists confirm it’s due to human activity

Beckwith was alerted to the development from a blog post by environmental writer Robert Scribbler, who wrote that this “weather weirding due to climate change” is something that “would absolutely not happen in a normal world. Something, that if it continues, basically threatens seasonal integrity.” Scribbler explained that the barrier between the two jet streams is what has generated the strong divide between Summer and Winter during the Holocene Climate Epoch. If the boundary is eroded, it could create what Scribbler described as a “death of Winter” scenario with “more Summer heat spilling over into the Winter zone and vice versa.”

Both Scribbler and Beckwith agree that human civilization is not prepared to deal with this new climate trend. “There’s very strange things going on on planet Earth right now,” said Beckwith. “There’s very, very strange things going on with the jet streams which guide our weather patterns.”

I never use taxis, and only rarely Uber; mostly just when I need to get to LaGuardia (which the trains don't run to).

Mostly I walk, for grocery shopping I use the bike, and if I'm in a hurry I take the subway.

Ah, yes. An "environmental writer" (that must be a lonely profession) says that we are going to lose our seasons and a GEOGRAPHY professor repeats the unqualified opinion, so it is true. Sounds legit.

No, the Earth's jet streams are not spinning out of control | Ars Technica

There are plenty of reasons to be concerned about the Earth's climate, from rising seas to droughts and intense heat waves. But amidst these concerns there is the potential for hyperbole, and we saw some of that flare up during the last few days, when two protagonists put forward the idea that the planet's jet streams are spinning out of control.

One of the people making this claim was Paul Beckwith, a self-described "well-known climate science educator," who noted that the jet stream in the Northern Hemisphere has crossed the equator and joined up with the jet stream in the Southern Hemisphere. "Welcome to climate chaos," Beckwith wrote. "We must declare a global climate emergency." He then encouraged readers to donate to his site. Another person, Robert Scribbler, declared that the jet stream was now wrecked. These claims went viral.

It sounds terrible, of course, and we definitely need to be concerned with rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases playing havoc with global atmospheric circulations. But in this case, we can probably view these claims as a bit of hot air.

The influential Capital Weather Gang, which forecasts conditions in Washington, DC and also writes about global weather issues, looked into the matter. After interviewing several scientists, the site declared the claim of a wrecked jet stream to be "utter nonsense." And for good reason—air flow between the hemispheres is not all that uncommon. This cross-equatorial flow occurs at both the upper and lower levels of the atmosphere as part of the seasonal transition in the Western Pacific Ocean.

Some credible scientists have raised concerns about a warming planet destabilizing the polar jet streams, and there remains a vigorous debate in peer-reviewed journals about these ideas. But as one of the scientists who proposed the destabilization theory, Rutgers University's Jennifer Francis, told Capital Weather Gang, "I’d say cross-equator flow cannot be unprecedented, maybe not even all that unusual."

I'll explain why this question made me inhale a little bit of pastrami just now.

That picture was taken by my sister a few years ago, when she, my brother-in-law, and my niece came up from Florida to visit.

She posted it on Facebook, and then, about midway through the comments, added this:

And the pastrami:

Looks like Clinton just got a hell of a pass from the FBI.
Hundreds of classified emails including 8 at the top secret level were mishandled and they are recommending no disciplinary action.

Absolutely infuriating. Literally no words do justice to how unacceptable this is.

I guess Snowden is getting a pass too now right?

Fun Fact: The Obama administration has brought more charges under the Espionage Act against officials for allegedly mishandling classified information than all other administrations combined since it was signed into law 99 years ago.

Fun Quote: “There’s classified and then there’s classified,” President Obama said nobody gets treated differently by the Justice Department “because nobody is above the law.”

He never touched on why she used a personal server to begin with.

Was this to avoid FOIA requests? I can see no other reason to risk clearance sanctions.

There's been a lot of speculation flying around. The best I can put together is this:
  • People in high branches of government frequently use non-secure communications paths to send secure information mostly because secure systems are a pain in the ***. (Anyone who has ever worked as a gov't contractor knows this.)
  • Clinton, like most other high-ranking members of government, has both a private (non-secure) and an official (secure) email address.
  • The documents in question were sent to Clinton at her private email address by others, and despite containing classified information, were not actually marked as classified.

So, at the risk of sounding like I'm standing up for Clinton (I'm not), it looks like she actually didn't do anything wrong, and that she's merely facing increased scrutiny because she's a candidate for the Presidency of the US. In other words, we (WTP) would appear to be attributing to a conspiracy something which is adequately explained by laziness.
