I thought it was Norway. Since they have an enormous amount of natural resource wealth to pay for their spending. Their sovereign wealth fund is the largest in the world.

Couple perspectives.

Yeah: A basic income for everyone? Yes, Finland shows it really can work

Yes.

In the US, it's currently practiced in Alaska and by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Other folks have either done it in the past or are doing it now.

The Seminole tribe presently have rates of unemployment, alcoholism, drug abuse, obesity and chronic disease which make Mississippi look like Portland.

Alaska seems to be doing ok. At least, as ok as you can be when your seasons consist of "we're definitely all going to die if you can't get this engine started" and "dear god, where did all these mosquitoes come from?"

Everyone in the outskirts of Nairobi is still poor as hell, and dying of mostly the same stuff as before. The folks in the more urban regions are doing ok.

People in Utrecht, Netherlands work about 10% fewer hours per week on average than before the implementation of Weten Wat Werkt, but still find time to look reasonably hip and complain about all the German tourists.

Also, it's been an interesting day in the world's securities markets.

I am not really a fan of universal income but I think Native American tribes have a host of other issues related to culture (rejection of the white man's system), systemic oppression (causes #1 and #3), and an under educated population that skew the ability to compare their UBI to a broader UBI.

Alaska seems to be doing ok. At least, as ok as you can be when your seasons consist of "we're definitely all going to die if you can't get this engine started" and "dear god, where did all these mosquitoes come from?"

Alaska's general fund dividend is like $1000/year. That is hardly enough money to change working habits or increase a person's risk appetite. You cannot sustain even the most basic needs (food, water, and tarp to keep you dry) on that kind of money.

Everyone in the outskirts of Nairobi is still poor as hell, and dying of mostly the same stuff as before. The folks in the more urban regions are doing ok.
Don't really know anything about Nairobi so I cannot comment.

This experiment, like the one in California, is not actually a test of UBI. It is merely a welfare system as it targets people who are low-income or unemployed. To really see the effects of UBI it has to be given to EVERYONE. There are also other constraints on the Netherlands experiment like the fact that it is known to the participants that this income is temporary which has a significant impact on how this money will be treated by the participants.

Of interest; Ford Files Patent for New Composite Cylinder Head

Last week, Ford filed a patent for a new type of composite cylinder head design that could reduce weight, slash manufacturing costs and save money on raw materials. The company’s new “Hybrid Composite Cylinder Head” would be made up mostly of a polymer composite instead of the traditional aluminum or iron.

Ford’s patent application describes an “internal metal structure” made of cast iron, which could include the upper combustion chambers, combustion chamber inserts, fire deck, engine coolant ports, and oil drain ports. The internal structure would be surrounded by an FRP composite structure that could contain oil feeds for hydraulic valve lash adjusters and spark plug/fuel injector pockets (assuming the engine has direct injection). According to the patent, Ford is considering thermoset resins, including polyurethane, epoxy, phenolic or polyamide. That polymer would be reinforced by either carbon fiber, aramid fiber, glass fiber or other alternatives.

As lightweight, high-strength composites become more prevalent in commercial automotive applications, it’s not surprising to see Ford look at metal alternatives for its engine components. Two years ago, the automaker showed off a 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine at the Detroit auto show that made use of injection-molded carbon fiber for a number of parts, including the cylinder head. The mill’s weight fell nearly 16 percent compared to a stock motor.

And last year, Ford and Magna teamed up to develop a carbon fiber-reinforced composite subframe. This key piece of architecture weighed 34 percent less than a conventional subframe, employing far fewer parts.

Anecdote that is only tangentally related:

Back in 2005 or so I went to the Wikwemekong indian reserve in Ontario Canada to bury my Grandpa's ashes as per his wishes. When we got there we met his 70+ year old cousin and one of her 17 year old great grandkids. That's who lived on the reservation. Geriatrics and teenagers. I can't say for sure, but I recall that at least while living on the reservation all indians of their tribe got a monthly stipend. It may have been paid monthly, maybe every two weeks, I can't recall.

Adults would come home to the reservations to have kids so that they would be considered full blood indians, and come back to live (die?) when they got old, but during the years of about 22 to 55 they would be off all over the world working and making money in places with more opportunities. The only money coming into the reservation was a government check. And at least in the case of my Grandpa's cousin? The check would get cashed, they would drive off reservation and buy groceries and beer. They would drink until all the beer was gone, and just sit around and wait till the next check. It was the most depressing poverty I have ever seen. Not in the material sense because everyone had houses and nobody was starving, but it was poverty in the intellectual sense.

That is just my "white man's" view of what I saw. Maybe what they were getting out of it was fulfilling and beautiful, but it didn't speak to me for sure.

The situation with the Seminole is interesting. I got to witness it first-hand about 10 years ago, when I spent a little while living on the reservation as a guest of the Chief while we were doing a project for them.

When people think "Indian business" they tend to think "Casino." And that's certainly how the Seminole fortune started, but their leadership has wisely invested and re-invested their fortunes over the years. Today, the tribe owns all sorts of businesses you wouldn't typically associate with them, including the Micco Aircraft company and the entire Hard Rock Cafe & Hotel chain.

As a result the stipends paid to each tribal member are huge. As in >$10k a month huge. That, in addition to free education, free healthcare, and guaranteed jobs (if they want them) means that a huge number of people simply never leave the reservation. And, what's more, the majority of them don't work. They've all got guaranteed jobs if they want them, but why bother when you can make six figures doing nothing?

As you move around through the reservation, you notice that the vast majority of the people working in low-wage positions (kitchen & hotel staff, casino dealers, custodial staff, etc.,) are all white, with Seminole really only bothering to show up for customer-facing positions where there is expected to be a red face.

So, to Ryan_G's observation: I can only speak to one particular Indian tribe in the US, as it's the only one in which I've actually spent time down in the trenches working alongside the tribal leadership. But in that one specific case, the problems of obesity / education / alcoholism / unemployment / etc., are entirely the Seminoles' own creation. Their council got themselves elected by promising to create the ultimate welfare state, and they delivered.

govt. tackling the worlds biggest issues.

https://www.theblaze.com/news/2018/0...ampaign=buffer

A pair of New York Democrats have introduced a bill in the New York State Assembly that they say is necessary to combat the consumption of Tide Pods. The bill would require the pods to packaged in a uniform color, as well as requiring each pod to be individually wrapped in plastic complete with a warning label.

What the heck?

Teenagers and some young adults have started an Internet trend called the “Tide Pod challenge,” in which they post videos online of themselves with Tide Pods in their mouth. Although the source of the problem is clearly the fact that reckless stupidity can get you internet fame, New York State Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas — both New York City Democrats — believe that the problem is that people somehow do not understand the danger associated with swallowing commercial cleaning products, or perhaps that Tide Pods actually look appetizing to some people because of their colorful design.

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, there have been over 80 cases of intentional misuse of Tide Pods reported so far in 2018, up from only 53 cases in all of 2017.

more on Flynn:

Newly revealed text messages between FBI paramours Peter Strzok and Lisa Page include an exchange about preparing talking points for then-FBI Director James Comey to give to President Obama, who wanted “to know everything we’re doing."The message, from Page to Strzok, was among thousands of texts between the lovers reviewed by Fox News. The pair both worked at one point for Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Page wrote to Strzok on Sept. 2, 2016, about prepping Comey because "potus wants to know everything we're doing." According to a newly released Senate report, this text raises questions about Obama's personal involvement in the Clinton email investigation. In texts previously revealed, Strzok and Page have shown their disdain for Republicans in general, as well as Trump, calling him a "f---ing idiot," among other insults.

Among the newly disclosed texts, Strzok also calls Virginians who voted against then-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe's wife for a state Senate seat "ignorant hillbillys." (sic)

That text came from Strzok to Page on Nov. 4, 2015, the day after Jill McCabe lost a hotly contested Virginia state Senate election. Strzok said of the result, "Disappointing, but look at the district map. Loudon is being gentrified, but it's still largely ignorant hillbillys. Good for her for running, but curious if she's energized or never again."Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., along with majority staff from the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, is releasing the texts, along with a report titled, “The Clinton Email Scandal and the FBI's Investigation of it.”

The newly uncovered texts reveal a bit more about the timing of the discovery of "hundreds of thousands" of emails on former Congressman Anthony Weiner's laptop, ultimately leading to Comey's infamous letter to Congress just days before the 2016 presidential election.

On Sept. 28, 2016, Strzok wrote to Page, "Got called up to Andy's [McCabe] earlier.. hundreds of thousands of emails turned over by Weiner's atty to sdny [Southern District of New York], includes a ton of material from spouse [Huma Abedin]. Sending team up tomorrow to review... this will never end." According to the Senate report, this text message raises questions about when FBI officials learned of emails relevant to the Hillary Clinton email investigation on the laptop belonging to Weiner, the husband to Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

It was a full month later, on Oct. 28, 2016, when Comey informed Congress that, "Due to recent developments," the FBI was re-opening its Clinton email investigation.

"In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation. I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday..." Comey said at the time.

The question becomes why Comey was only informed by his investigative team on Oct. 27, if the Clinton emails on Weiner’s laptop were discovered by Sept. 28, at the latest.

Other texts show more examples of the officials' opposition to Trump.

On Election Day 2016, Page wrote, "OMG THIS IS F***ING TERRIFYING." Strzok replied, "Omg, I am so depressed." Later that month, on Nov. 13, 2016, Page wrote, "I bought all the president's men. Figure I need to brush up on watergate."

The next day, Nov. 14, 2016, Page wrote, “God, being here makes me angry. Lots of high fallutin’ national security talk. Meanwhile we have OUR task ahead of us.”

Page’s meaning here is unclear, but according to the Senate report, coupled with Strzok’s Aug. 15 text about an “insurance policy,” further investigation is warranted to find out what actions the two may have taken.

The last text is from Page to Strzok, and comes on June 23, 2017, when she wrote, "Please don't ever text me again."

It's unclear whether she was mad at her friend, or if she suddenly became aware that they, and their thousands of texts, had been discovered.

again: find the deleted post between 9929 and 9930 and the one-side conversation around/after that.

I was told Flynn is the most important news/thing to happen ever in the history of the world and everyone but me cares about Flynn, because Flynn lying to the fbi proves collusion. He was in the news cycle for 1 day. So anytime I post anything that breaks the collusion narrative and actually suggests the opposite, I mention Flynn.

remember: I'm dumb and say dumb things.
