What's the harm in illegal aliens anyway? RIP Zupan

Sad day for Portlanders. I wish newspaper articles more often reported on the immigration status in these kinds of accidents. It might help raise people's awareness of the true impact they have on the country or communities.

John Zupan, 66, of Vancouver, was rushed to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with critical injuries after the crash. He later died at the hospital.

Investigators said Edy Reynoso-Ramirez, 32, was driving erratically and speeding eastbound along NE Marine Drive when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into Zupan's motorcycle near the 138th Avenue intersection. (Ramirez pictured in police mug shot at right.)

The driver fled on foot but police said they found him a short time later and arrested him around 8 p.m.

NE Marine Drive was closed between 138th and 148th Avenues as police investigated. They said both vehicles left the roadway after the crash, and Ramirez' Honda Civic ended up at the bottom of a steep embankment. The motorcycle was a 2009 BMW.

Ramirez was facing several charges, including DUII. Police said he was also placed on an immigration hold.

Zupan started his unique Portland grocery store chain in 1975. His son, Mike took over in 2000 so that he could enjoy retirement.

For anyone not familiar, Zupan's is a high end, natural, eco friendly supermarket similar to Whole foods or Trader Joe's.

Poor guy.

Makes me wonder how many incidents like this are never reported by the media.

Shit happens all the time in Houston.

You can spot this type easily as they drive:

-without insurance, so you're not covered unless you have UI (which is smart)
-uninspected, and likely unsafe for the road, at the least spewing oil, unburnt fuel, and coolant out the pipe
-unregistered, so not paying their share of the road tax, even though their addition to the congestion is one of the main reasons ALL of Houston is under construction
-unlicensed...therefore erratically, and with no regard for laws or conventions (left lane campers, no blinkers etc.)

There's a good song Walton and Johnson (morning talk show) play on Fridays to the tune of the Beatle's "Paperback Writer" called "Immigrant Driver" that pretty well sums it up.

One here in Houston recently got liquored up and killed an off-duty cop.

I've always wondered what the statistics for motorcycle's would be if you took out all the under braked HDs, drunks, reckless riders, and incidents like this. Could be interesting.

On a side note, I loved Zupans. Just the right mix of quality for price. Zad day when the one down the street from my childhood home closed up. I think they only had the one left in Sellwood last I checked.

The motorcycle rider at fault accidents are sub 10% according to my msf teacher. Sure you find few here and there from squids but thats it. The other 90% are caused by cagers.

This country could be so baller.... if it weren't for the a good portion of the people(illegal, and legal).

I dont see the problem.

The Internal Revenue Service allowed undocumented workers to collect $4.2 billion in refundable tax credits last year, a new audit says, almost quadruple the sum five years ago.

Although undocumented workers are not eligible for federal benefits, the report released Thursday by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration concludes that federal law is ambiguous on whether these workers qualify for a tax break based on earned income called the additional child tax credit.

Taxpayers can claim this credit to reduce what they owe in taxes, often getting refunds from the government. The vagueness of federal law may have contributed to the $4.2 billion in credits, the report said.

The IRS said it lacks the authority to disallow the claims

Question: Does undocumented mean illegal? If so that quote is fucked up. How the hell does a person not legally living/working here get refundable tax credits? And why the fuck are they paying taxes in the first place? I thought illegals had to be paid in cash under the table.

Braineack 09-07-2011 08:37 AM

see for yourself

http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/auditr...1141061fr.html

The auditors highlight the finding themselves:

"Individuals Who Are Not Authorized to Work in the United States Were Paid $4.2 Billion in Refundable Credits"

Many individuals who are not authorized to work in the United States, and thus not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) for employment, earn income in the United States. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides such individuals with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to facilitate their filing of tax returns. Although the law prohibits aliens residing without authorization in the United States from receiving most Federal public benefits, an increasing number of these individuals are filing tax returns claiming the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), a refundable tax credit intended for working families. The payment of Federal funds through this tax benefit appears to provide an additional incentive for aliens to enter, reside, and work in the United States without authorization, which contradicts Federal law and policy to remove such incentives.
they arent paying taxing, they are just filing for a tax "refund"

gospeed81 09-07-2011 08:53 AM

Yeah, the whole Tax ID # deal was a great idea to allow illegals to pay in...that kinda backfired. I wonder why...?

Seriously, when someone brings their whole family with them, doesn't pay into the system, but uses every benefit available (educational, medical, food stamps, tax credits) there are some serious problems, but they were made by us.

If you don't say "no" and stem the flow there will always be people lined up holding empty buckets.

You mean like put up a fence and send them all packing? Why, that would violate their constitutional rights!
