This is a video my son shot in his 10th grade debate class. Basically the teacher did an example of how a debate would sound like. He used his radical left ideas in the example. The theme of the debate was that Black Panther Style Communism is better than the Purge. WTF, these kids aren't even legally old enough to watch that crappy movie series.


I'm pretty against the cancel culture, so should I request this teacher get some kind of bias training or something? F, I try so hard to stay out of this toxic political environment but they keep putting me in a corner. Any thoughts on how I should proceed here?

Oh and the monetization is off on this and its not a plug for anything.

Batshit premises have been part of debate classes since well... the beginning of time. In my high school debate class we debated the merits of cannibalism vs marrying your first cousin. Yet... i don't think my teacher liked to eat people, let alone was trying to brainwash me into eating people. The context here really just isn't that hard to understand: "Ol Joe" (neat nickname) isn't saying "Hey kids you all need to be Black Panthers." The context is "Thing A is better than Thing B, here's an example of what a debate of Thing A vs Thing B would be like." That's the entire point of that class. Would different Thing A and Thing B maybe have been a better choice in today's "woke" society where parents take to social media in outrage because feels? Absolutely.

If you're actually asking for input how to handle it: Just talk to the teacher. He's a human. He presumably has some brain cells. (Or maybe not because he's a public school teacher in 2021 working for peanuts in a toxic environment.) "Hey Ol' Joe, these are 14-15 year old kids and would you mind choosing subjects to debate a little more age-appropriate?" I'm pretty certain he's not going to hulk out in a "Woke SJW Teacher" rage. Just bear in mind there's a very large gap between "Showing kids The Purge" and "Explaining the premise behind The Purge." I'm assuming by this point in your kid's academic career he's probably heard or read about slavery in various cultures, The Crusades, World Wars, etc.

I appreciate your thoughts, however incorrect they may be. Imagine a business meeting where the same examples of the Purge, Communism, and the Black Panthers were discussed to explain supply chain issues. Is the lady in the meeting talking about supply chain or is she trying to pass off her weird political ideas to the board. Now take that example which would be wildly inappropriate in a grownup setting and apply it to 15 year old kids. We have so much victim blaming these days its sick. I can absolutely blast this guy and still disagree with cancel culture. Evil always hides in the shadows hoping people are to scared to bring it into the light.

Imagine that high school debate class isn't a business meeting.

Haha, yes imagine its an impressionable teenager. Maybe if he had used Hitler and the Nazi party this would be easily swallowed. Hitler was an amateur compared to Mao. I'd love to have a discussion over what the cutoff line on death toll numbers is to get upset. I thought 100 million had me pretty safe.

Would it be easier for you if the discussion was drug laws vs availability and the teacher explained how Meth was the better drug because you can easily cook it in the woods, here is the ingredient list, and the mix and cook schedule.

Academic institutions should be spaces where opposing ideas, even extreme ones, can be openly discussed and debated. Imagine being so offended by someone else's expression of different political ideologies. Sounds like something the right usually complains about on college campuses.

The thing is that in the context of a debate class, my frontal lobe is developed enough that i'd understand that the teacher isn't telling me that everyone should actually do meth.

And my frontal lobe was that developed when my teacher told us that cannibalism was superior to wedding first cousins in my debate class. Granted, Youtube wasn't around then so i guess my dad didn't have a platform to cancel anyone with, but staunch of a Republican as he is, he recognized that this was a debate class, and not a brainwashing.

Would you have been in 10th grade? Would the last line of his speech have been, " remember kids, when someone tells you you'll never amount to something, you can always cook meth." So the issue is the public nature of the complaint? I'm not even a republican, im just a human, but im pretty acutely aware of brainwashing propaganda.

Thats actually a very true statement. If you only told the class that being a Nazi was perfectly fine because Hitler was a great speaker, then I have an issue. I can't believe the lack of concern about biased discussions and dangerous cancerous complicated topics being discussed with kids in a very biased manner. If the discussion was the good and bad points of Communism or Black Panthers, sure sounds good. My issue is the blatant bias. Honestly, there are good and bad points with the way any government is run. I'm for capitalism and freedom but can absolutely explain 10 nasty things about it without hesitation.

Just an FYI, movie ratings have no legal implication. A studio or director doesn't even have to submit a movie to the MPAA for a rating.

So, OK, like right now, for example, the Haitians need to come to America. But some people are all, "What about the strain on our resources?"

But it's like when I had this garden party for my father's birthday, right? I said RSVP because it was a sit-down dinner. But people came that, like, did not RSVP. So I was, like, totally buggin'. I had to haul ass to the kitchen, redistribute the food, squish in extra place settings. But, by the end of the day it was, like, the more the merrier!

And so, if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians.

And in conclusion, may I please remind you that it does not say "RSVP" on the Statue of Liberty.

I took debate classes starting as early as 8th grade thru graduation. We all did. I would have been 12. 8th grade was Incest vs Cannibalism.

I don't think you're aware of brainwashing propaganda at all. I think you project that everything you don't like is brainwashing and don't seem to be capable of dissecting subject matter in context. I don't like what you're posting because it's blowing my mind in not a good way, but i wouldn't label it as propaganda.

It's a debate class. The entire point of debate class is you choose a side and then attempt to win with it. Debates literally do not happen without the existence of bias.

This is not a "Pros and Cons of Communism 101" class. It's not even a class about communism in any form.
