You think we have it bad with the war on drugs?
Remind me to never ever set foot in Dubai.

This is what happens when the populace grant legitimacy to a ruling class.

Drugs in Dubai
Keith Andrew Brown (or Keith Brown), found himself receiving a 4 year jail sentence in February 2008 after Dubai Airport customs found 0.003g of cannabis stuck to the sole of his shoe, an amount almost invisible to the naked eye.
a Swiss man in jail for possession of 3 poppy seeds that he brought with him to Dubai after eating a poppy seed bun at Heathrow airport.
Cat Le-Huy was arrested at Dubai Airport because customs officers found him in possession of melatonin according to Daily Mail and BBC News reports. Both reports said that melatonin is available over the counter in Dubai.
Two Canadian tourists in September 2009, Rocky Sharma and Stephen MacLeod, discovered that even though Celebrex (an arthritis medicine) is not banned in the UAE, possession of it resulted in free budget accommodation in a Dubai jail for a month after Dubai airport officials discovered it in one of their bags when they arrived. The lengthy stay was apparently because it took that long for the Dubai authorities to figure out what the drug was.
In March 2005, Tracy Wilkinson was arrested at Dubai Airport after her urine tested positive for codeine. She was detained in prison until May 2005, when she was acquitted according to BBC reports. According to other reports, she was found guilty and given a 4 year jail sentence for possession of narcotics. A prescription from her GP in the UK was presented in court which helped secure her release. The irony is that she was caught when leaving the UAE, after having been given codeine at a Dubai hospital for her back pain.

Ya like the poppy seeds on the bagel you ate in the airport you left.
Or the crap that got stuck to the bottom of your shoe.
I wonder if any of these passengers who got jailed, were simply on a layover.
People in power are hypocrites. A gay friend regaled(?) me with stories of the bacchanalian gay orgies he got invited to by a Saudi prince... in a land where the religious police jail gays.

Profiling. "Suspicious" behavior (um, like having taken sleep aids on the plane), can earn you a pee test. They are also very racist - they don't like orientals and when you are profiled they try very hard to find trace amounts of any contraband. The guy with a speck of marijuana - they found a rolled up cigarette in the tread of his shoe. They keep you for several hours and go CSI on your clothes and stuff.

i have been there 13 times because its where my flights connect. its full of asian women, the girls that work at the hotel are asian. lots of rusian women too. there is constant construction going on, its very hazy there. the heat is not unbearable, i have been to hotter places....i would not make it a vacation destination but, i have never had any trouble there up to this point. i walk all over the place and i dont feel unsafe, however, when going to the market area, is best not to say you are an American as there are many other people who are not from there who live there and hate Americans. the hotel is not bad at all, for the price, is a lot better than what we can get in the us. its very clean, the staff is friendly, the food is good. the booz in the bar sucks, its very expensive so its not a drink-friendly place.

this doesn't count as sewage plumbing:
Where does al lthe poop go in Dubai? Millions of people and no sewers, just holding tanks and "poop" trucks. We found this lineup out on the highway and never found the end of it. We asked the drivers and they had been there for 3 days. Maybe why they now just dump it in the ocean and the beaches are closed. Listen closely....

yeah, I'd stay out of Dubai right now:
A spokesperson for the Navy's 5th Fleet, which is based in nearby Bahrain, said that a security team aboard the oil supply ship U.S.N.S. Rappahannock fired a .50 caliber machine gun at a "small motor vessel after it disregarded warnings and rapidly approached the U.S. ship" off the coast of Jebel Ali, a city approximately 30 miles from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
