Ran into a overheating issue yesterday, scared the shit out of me:noes: (i baby my car). noticed my over flow tank completely empty so walked to nearest gas station and got water and filled it up and drove home VERY cautiously.
So the next day came around which and lifted the car up today and did some troubleshooting.
-checked the radiator, Was almost empty!:td:
got some coolent and topped off, Ran the car to let the bubbles float to the top and noticed a nice little pesky leak of dripping coolent drip right under the crank pully. I immediately thought it might have been the waterpump.

well it was:crx: After removing everyhing the leak was coming from right under the WP.

thinking what could have caused this i went thinking back when i did the timing belt and waterpump job( 1.5k miles ago) and remembered not applying the water pump silicone gasket sealant Doh!

Ok! so get this guys. After removing everything that needed to be removed im just laying there under the car and almost shit my pants to this:

After that over heating yesterday this mysteriously happend...No wonder i wasn't spooling quick..and again:facepalm:

Looks like i gotta go pick up some stainless MIG wire feed and fill up my argon tank for the welder tomorrow to get to work on the manifold now.

-This isnt anything new to me as i was in denial about this little issue but just wanted to show you all. I believe the seals on my little dsm 16g turbo are going bad and contaminating my intercooler piping..reason why i think this:
http://i43.tinypic.com/2iqese8.jpg
Where my BOV purges, everything is coated with oil. Decided to inspect my piping to see if there might be a collection of oil somewhere and what do i find?
http://i39.tinypic.com/302vthc.jpg

Its not that bad but its enough to make me wanna switch back to my new condition chinacharger 16g:ugh:

heres where i left off for now.

I like the way you keeps your cams from turning on you.

Little issues suck! I think we all have them with turbo except for hustler and his museum piece.

Sucks to hear man... How long was it running hot for to do this damage?

Braineack 04-23-2009 09:54 AM

at least mine were more spaced out (time wise that is) :P

must be a requisite for admin status :giggle:

I've always thought those cheap manifold support tabs were a bad idea. It seems that the always cause the thin tubing tear right at the weld spots due to the heat/cool expansion/contraction of the metal.

rebuild that turbo. it only takes about half an hour. check out gpopshop.com for a kit. very helpful and fast fast shipping.

cjernigan 04-23-2009 07:35 PM

Use the mig wire you have on that manifold man, the mild wire will work fine. Either way it's going to continue to crack. Don't waste money on the stainless wire.
Apply the sealant to the water pump. I would probably run the ching chong charger if it worked fine and wasnt leaking oil.

+1

I had the EXACT issues you have. Oil being shot from the BOV (underside of my hood was black in a huge circle) and a nice collection of oil in the charge pipes.

A rebuild kit from Gpop fixed it!!

But, you've got a nice new one from what I read, so just a thought :)

rogezeus2003 04-23-2009 11:24 PM

Well, the main thing to remember is that u catched everything on time and there wasnt any bigger issues later on. Good luck.

hustler 04-23-2009 11:59 PM

that oil could be PCV vapor.

magnamx-5 04-24-2009 12:09 AM

rofl man that sucks. Ive been there to man just keep on truckin

railz 04-24-2009 01:21 AM

i,ll use the new china charger FOR NOW but will get that rebuild kit like you all recommend.

yeah, boy . . . it's a good thing he caught them too ;)

Well, I guess the bug hit us at the same time. I found out that what I thought was just some paint chipping on my manifold, was actually a crack btw the 2 and 3 runners. FML.. I guess it gives me a reason to build a better one.

this is what happens when you make fun of people:

Those are painful as hell to look at.

I bent number one rod, and my first car came with a spare head and all sorts of shit lodged in cylinder 6, but otherwise nothing catastrophic engine-wise.

Dont want to detract too much from how much your situation sucks though lol.

railz 04-25-2009 12:57 PM

OMFG..... ok so i fixed the gasket put everything back together fired up the car and checked for leaks and guess what. drip drip drip T_T

it was leaking from the f#cking weep hole this entire time AHHHHHHHHHHH T_T

Because my water pump is newish, like almost 3k old i didnt even consider it might be the pump going bad but it was...and now i have to go out and get a new pump and start all over again

gospeed81 04-25-2009 01:18 PM

I didn't even think you weren't replacing it...why all the work and not an extra $60 for insurance. Hell, if you had just replaced it, should have had a warranty to cash in on.

Really sorry to hear you'll be doing the job again. Trust me though, it' only takes a little over 4 hours the second time.
