1.6 turbo mock up pics

Hey guys, got my stock exhaust off and mocking up the turbo. Any issues that you can see here?

Your turbo CHRA needs to be clocked better.

needs to be close to vertical right?

mr steve 03-28-2017 09:50 PM

I have a downpipe with a 5 bolt flange on it, but the internal wastegate runs thru the 5 bolt to v-band adapter... thing is the flapper cant really open that far inside the 5 bolt to v-band adapter. Is it possible to run the wg actuator rod through a downpipe?

Yes.

Huh? The V-Band housing is the same as others here and it works fine. You need to port the turbo.

If your downpipe flange doesn't have the same provision to actuate the flapper than no, you can't.

T3 flange on the turbo?

I plan on porting the flapper hole and a little on the back side if I stay v-band. I guess i will cut the downpipe and have a vband and angle welded on. see pichttps://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...cf87006daf.jpg

That downpipe isn't 5-bolt... Again, T3 flange turbo?

Yes it is a t3, has the t3 flange... dont know why 5 bolt is stuck in my head from my dsm days still.

shuiend 03-29-2017 07:53 AM

Yeah I am doubtful that downpipe works at all.

m2cupcar 03-29-2017 08:11 AM

That t3 turbine is likely a Ford t3 5-bolt pattern. Downpipe looks like a t2 flange. If you already have that downpipe you need get a v-band flange on it.

mr steve 03-29-2017 09:48 AM

anyone ever try to cut the backside off the vband housing and weld a downpipe to it?

Why are you insisting on doing things the hard way? Just have a 2.5" v-band welded on the end of the downpipe and enjoy life (assuming that's all it needs, likely a bit of fab work as well).

not insisting, inquiring.
i would rather take a little extra time and not have boost control issues later. others have done this but the results won't necessarily be the same depending on turbine size and housing...

here are the specs on the turbo:

T3 Internal wastegate COM.42 A/R 45 Trim.48A/R
  • 2.37" Inlet Diameter
  • 2.28" Outlet Diameter
  • Wet Floating Bearing
  • T3 Flange
  • Oil Inlet M12X1.5
  • Compressor Wheel
  • Ind: 1.67"
  • Exd:2.37"
  • Turbiner Wheel
  • 4-Bolt Standard Hot Side
  • Ind: 2.52"
  • Exd: 1.82"

it is the same turbo used in my mkturbo setups. Port the wastegate hole and you won't have overboost issues. Use a 2.5" vband flange to attach to the turbo. That downpipe will probably need to be modified a good bit besides just having a vband welded onto the end. It's roughly the correct shape, but I'm willing to bet it some if the distances between bends are incorrect.

mr steve 03-29-2017 11:52 AM

thanks dude ^. everyone's replies much appreciated!

mr steve 03-29-2017 03:49 PM

good thing I am removing my trans to do a clutch job... this downpipe will not go in

I clocked my CHRA like this. I don't have PS or AC so IC piping was simple to route. V band on the down pipe makes for simple fast install.

looking very similar now. where did you get those oil lines?

Go look in your local phone book for hydraulic shops, then call them up and you can probably find one that can make lines for you.

It's gonna cost you about $40 if you don't have any of this stuff already, but you can basically pick it all up on the way home from work...

Thanks man. I've got most of it, need to grab the carbide cutter from HD racing

wackbards 03-31-2017 08:42 AM

I recommend a rounded tip cutter like the one I linked to. The Prussian blue is handy for determining exactly where the waste gate flap is making contact.

Quick question- anyone know which fittings I need to get the t3 working with this oil line? I already have an m10 x1.5 to 4an for the block.....RACING TURBO UPGRADE OIL COOLING FEED LINE 36" T3 T4 T04E T70 T60 MIATA RX7 RX8 | eBay

I also have the flange that bolts to the feed side of turbo

mr steve 09-07-2017 02:53 PM

That downpipe works pretty good! Almost ready to tune.... I guess I'm waiting til after the storm.

It was an ebay listing called:
For Turbo Charger T3 Internal wastegate COM.42 A/R 45 Trim.48A/R

But that is no longer active.

In other news this blew a head gasket on the first ride, some pics:

Porting just the hole didn't do the trick, you will need to do a lot of porting of hole and make a valley to the hole. What I ended up with was sort of like this but without the deep valley near the flange.

here is a pic of the car almost finished. it made around 250 on the virtual dyno at 15psi boost creeping. I will see what I can do now with the ebc hooked up...no more power but a lot more midrange

I still need to work on the undertray and get the slicks mounted for an event this weekend.

borka 11-29-2017 05:30 PM

250 is impressive for a stock 1.6 with ebay everything.

running megasquirt? what injectors?

mr steve 12-02-2017 04:35 PM

Megasquirt, 670cc injectors, 212KPA. It has an open downpipe that I cut right to about 15"

I have since dialed the boost back to 175kpa

mr steve 12-02-2017 04:38 PM

I got a steal on these rims and mounted some used SM7's on there for now to learn the car. Will probably go with A7's or the RS4's eventually depending on whether I really want to switch wheels at events.
