1.8L Street build questions

Hey everyone,

This is my first post after lurking and researching for around a year.

I'm from the UK and I have a 1995 Japanese import 1.8L S Special Type 2.

I've owned the car for a year now and I've competely fallen in love with it, but it does need more power. I've been looking in to turbos for around 9 months as well as searching here and around the web for awhile now, but I'd like more specific advice for what I want.

My Idea:

Aiming for around 200-230whp

Turbo - GT2554R

Manifold & Downpipe - Kraken

ECU - ME221

Injectors - Bosch EV14 640CC

Intercooler - Bofiracing

Radiator - Mishimoto

Clutch - Compition stage 3

The main goal would be to have a quick spooling street car that can also contend with most cars on the street. My only concern is if I'll end up wanting more power later, so I could possibly change the 2554 for the 2560. I've also read that some people think the 2554 is too small for the 1.8. Is this the case and is the 2560 the better one for my car?

Thanks in advance.

Good parts choices. +1 to kraken awesomeness.

I would personally go with a 2560r. It's a great turbo, spools good, real happy making 250hp and taps out around 280hp.

If you are buying new, consider the efr 6258. It's a bit more expensive, but well worth it. I went from a 2560 to efr6258 and the responsiveness difference is amazing.

I would strongly consider an EFR 6258 turbo.

If he is on a stock engine, there is no need for a 6258.

If he wants to build one, he should go with the bigger turbo.

an EFR will spool as fast as a 2560, and provide enough headroom for more power if OP wants.

I thought an efr on waste gate pressure was enough to bend rods?

I have zero experience with this but I swear I read that somewhere....

Ash94 05-08-2019 03:25 PM

Thanks for the responses guys. Efr could be a possibility, but I don't really want to build the engine.

Would it be fine running 260whp stock engine, or would it be a waste and just stick with the 2560?

ryansmoneypit 05-08-2019 04:03 PM

it is a better quality turbo, that spools just as fast. a few builds lately on stock rods too.

ps, a set of 250 dollar rods is cheap insurance.

These are my two concerns.

Turbo is too small for your "what if" scenario. Do consider EFR6258 they are expensive but many parts you require with a Garrett are built in as well as being newer technology.

Motorsport Electronics have a bad reputation here. That is about the politest thing you will find. There is a search box and me221 is a search term.
They are only a few miles from me and I've had dealings with them through others. I will not use them personally.

It is, but comes with other costs and having to pull and open the engine.

If the efr is safe (enough) on a stock engine, and your budget can take it, get the efr. Spools really quick, and is good for 300+ whp if you ever get up to that point.

Only issue really is cost... But money was made to be spent

To answer the OP's question, in the Garrett product line the GT2560 is a better match to the 1.8L engine. The GT2554 will make some boost faster then the 2560, but the 2560 makes full boost faster then the 2554. The extra power potential makes the GT2560 an obvious choice for your engine.

yossi126 05-09-2019 12:47 PM

I would be in the minority by saying that, but I think you'll enjoy the responsiveness of the 2554. It has enough juice to bend your rods just as much as the 2560.
I would only get a 2560 with a vvt.

EFR 9180 or bust

Just buy this setup though. Seriously

2560 will do the job and spool a little slower, which call me crazy but on a fun street car a little lag can be fun. Nowhere near the awful MSM levels, but also not on the opposite end of 12psi by like 2k rpms, which is just asking for trouble.

I put a ton of street miles on my fm2 '95 with that turbo and loved every minute of it. 220whp at about 11psi, dead nuts reliable on the street and the track.

Ash94 05-09-2019 06:04 PM

Thanks for all the responses everyone. All greatly appreciated.

I am now more torn between turbos than I was before this post. May take some more pondering and money saving but, I'm really liking the sound of the EFR or the 2560.

matrussell122 05-09-2019 08:38 PM

Once again

Just buy this setup seriously

Another vote for the 2560r. Great turbo perfectly suited to the 1.8. I just made 296whp/301ftlb on this turbo with a built motor and 18psi. So it's a very capable little thing.
