14 or 16?
I've pretty much decided on a DSM turbo for my project but I'm having trouble deciding which one to get. My goal is 200whp.
The 14b will spool quickly, but I'm afraid it will run out of breath at the top end. The small 16g will definately have enough breath but the spool will suffer. I think what I will do is keep searching for both and buy whichever one I find for the right price first, unless there is some reason to stick to one over the other. A little searching didn't reveal many people running either one, but I got a couple dyno graphs that lead me to believe I won't have any problem with top end on a 14b. Does all this sound like good reasoning? |
don't worry. It won't run out of breath anywhere near 200whp. I put down 209 on the lowest rating dyno in existence, which is about 241 on a dynomax dyno, and I've still got a few more psi to play with.
Edit: I meant dynojet :) |
That is exactly what I wanted to hear.

It'll make your goal, with little room to wiggle when you get bored :)

How about a t25?
|
SR t25 would be a good choice too but you can get 14b's for dirt ass cheap. The one I'm running was either $75 or $80 and I've bought them in the past for the same $.

the DSM guys take them off and replace them with bigger ones so they pretty much throw the old ones away it seems. |
Yeah, the T25's are even more disposable. :)
On my talon (with my old 2.0) held 17-18psi to 7,500rpm with a 14b. Small 16g held more like 20psi to the same. Both should work great for your goals. If you get a good deal on the 16g go for it. They spool almost exactly the same. If you want amazing spool get a T25 or 13g (flows a little more than the T25). |
The T25 confuses me. Most of the ones I see for sale are T25/28 or other hybrids. They also come in a bunch of different A/R ratios, right? The 14b is pretty simple as they're all the same from what I can tell.

Don't confuse DSM T25's with SR T25's. Totally different turbos.
DSM T25's run out of breath quick but will spool even if your car is shut off, as long as there's a breeze. |
Yikes, sounds like I'll be better off to stick with a 14b. No confusion there, and the we know it will hold boost to redline.
|
If you find a great condition 14b for a good price, go for it. Otherwise, I'd go for a small 16g. I love mine, even at a piddly 9psi. I'm waiting as long as I can stand it before upping the boost, but like knowing that my power sky isn't set by the turbo.

14b will be fine, i wouldn't bother with a mitsu t25
|
If you find a 14b and are concerned about top end at all or need room to grow in the future you can always swap out the 6cm2 exhaust housing for a 7cm2 one. It makes a real difference up top.
