16g DIY Turbo Kit

2 Attachment(s)
Well i "was" putting together a real nice turbo setup for my wifes 92 1.6l miata. Setup details -

Aem EMS, 5bar, IAT, UEGO, GM BCS
TONY custom built Manifold and 3" DP
REAL Mitsubishi Evo3 16g
DSM 450cc inj & resistor box wired in sequential firing
Genuine Walbro 255hp kit from fuelpumps.net
SX Fuel Pressure Regulator
Modified DSM 6an Fuel rail to fit on miata manifold
2.5" Aluminum IC piping
Ebay FMIC
1g DSM Bov
Aquamist Methanol Injection Kit w/shurflo pump
ACT Xtreme Clutch Kit and Fidanza 1.8l Flywheel

My goal was a reliable 250-275 hp 2000lb car to drive around and let her have some fun in since shes not allowed in my 700hp dsm.

But soon after some of the parts started showing up at the house she realized they weren't for my dsm and got quite pissed. I will be posting some more pics this evening when i get home. If anyone is interested in anything please PM or email me. I dont want to advertise pricing since that will probably cause a stir up with the mods.

MOD EDIT*** Us MODS are cool as shit, and you should advertise the price and get someone else in on this.

Braineack 10-26-2006 03:01 PM

I don't see any trouble hitting that goal with that setup. Love that dp! I take it you dont have a/c and p/s.

95Talispe 10-26-2006 03:04 PM

Actually Tony made it to clear the PS and the A/C!

magnamx-5 10-26-2006 04:33 PM

the evo 3 is overkill but it is still nice is the manifold a modified megan racing?

Atlanta93LE 10-26-2006 04:36 PM

I'll let you know when I get it :D

magnamx-5 10-26-2006 04:45 PM

realy how much did it go for?

95Talispe 10-26-2006 06:28 PM

Why do you guys think the evo3's are over kill?

No its not a modified megan manifold. Tony made this from Steel bends similar to the JGSTools stuff but with better effeciency in mind...and placement:) Its beefy and WILL NOT BEND, BREAK, CRACK.

Im asking 250shipped for the manifold and DP. 400-450shipped for the evo3 16g depending what accessories you want with it(gaskets, flanges, bolts, oil & coolant lines, etc) I will of course do combined prices.

Atlanta93LE - Please dont say its sold when you havent paid for it yet.

Atlanta93LE 10-26-2006 06:36 PM

Sorry about that.

magnamx-5 10-26-2006 06:38 PM

the 16g is good for 400+ whp the small wich i run is good for 300+ whp. there maps are similiar but the evo 3 pull it all the way from bottom to top. it is a great turbo but like i said it has alot more potential than 80-90% of miata owners will ever use. so how much for that clutch and flywheel. wish i hadnt bought hte safc now i woulda like the aem but ohwell.

Correction the manifold/dp is sold! Thanks Atlanta93LE

I dont see how you can say a evo3 16g can make 400whp on a 1.6l when on a 2.0l 4g63 (a FAR more efficient motor) barely gets past 350-370whp @ 25+psi. All 16g's have the same turbine wheel and the evo3 has a slightly larger housing & outlet. The 14b and all 16g's spool so close its almost undetectable which turbo someone has without looking at the compressor blades.

I hope know one takes this the wrong way but a T2SMALL is a junk turbo on dsm's and is so far out of its effiecieny range at 14-15psi its not even funny. Not to mention they are most unreliable turbo ive ever played with. Ive seen 2 come from mitsubishi with shaft play out the box. A t25 is far less efficient then a greddy 15g so it would be like downgrading. This is all coming from the DSM world of things...

Tony & I both expected the 16g to spool up to 10-12psi around ~2300rpms and keep strong up to redline. A 14b might spool up around ~2100 if that. I never researched the greddy kits that much but im sure the 15g and that joke of a downpipe would spool up int he same range.

Not sure why you guys are so worried about turbo lag. Its like foreplay before sex. This is the new turbo going on my 2.0 ->

Atlanta93LE 10-26-2006 07:53 PM

One word. Whoa.

magnamx-5 10-26-2006 08:10 PM

uh i run a small 16g and get 10-12 psi by 3600-3800 and start boost at 2000 rpm. the evo 3 flows like 612 cfm that is enough air for 400 whp easy. it isnt a lag issue. i am just saying that most miataphiles wont use all that turbo hence it is akin to swatting a bug with a hammer. if i run past 15 psi on my small and feel it is not enough then i will go to an evo 3. if we can get 430 cfm 15g's to put out 250 whp with good tunnig then a evo3 with good tunning can put out 400 no problem. and a small can do around 300 i hope. Still no reply on the clutch and flywheel what the hell is it for sale or what.

magnamx-5 10-26-2006 08:34 PM

i noticed you back tracking my post history for credibility. i thought i was hte only one who did stuff like that. :) find anything interesting?

95Talispe 10-26-2006 08:59 PM

magnamx-5 - I dont want to get into a pissing match with you but your setup is quite restricted compared to what i had in the works. The megan manifold has some of the smallest runners ive ever seen on a turbo manifold. Also the megan is a 2.5" dp and im sure your running a 2.5" or smaller exhaust. Also your MAF sensor, MBC, and wastegate actuator can all have affects on spool up.

Tony has already ran a similar setup to this but without the speed density aem ems and gave me those spool up characteristics. I also believe those numbers with how fast these turbos spool up on 2.0 and 2.3/2.4 stroker 4g63's. The runners on this manifold are larger and the design is in my opinion optimized for such a small motor/turbo setup. Also the 3" dp makes sure their are NO restrictions and boost control problems.

I dont see why you would upgrade from a small 16g after only going to 15psi. Their is such a huge difference with this turbo running 14-15psi to going to 22-24psi its unbelievable.

Also like i said when my wife killed the turbo miata plan i was able to cancel some of my parts orders. I posted my "plan" for the car not what i had instock here at the house...sorry if that caused any confusion.

Parts i HAVE for sale are -
Brand new Genuine Walbro 255hp Fuel Pump Kit - 105shipped

Genuine Mitsubishi Evo3 16g w/ 34mm Flapper & upgraded actuator(6hrs) - 350shipped or 400shipped with these accy-
CNC Oil Drain Flange & custom Line Kit
14b/16g SS Compressor Outlet Flange 2" outlet
Mitsubishi Turbine Housing Inlet and Outlet Gaskets

DSM 450cc Injectors w/ fresh rebuild, orings, seals - SOLD
SX Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator - SOLD
Modified Eclipse Fuel Rail w/ 3/8 hose in/out (MUCH larger inner Diameter) - SOLD
1g DSM BOV (uncrushed)- SOLD
Boomslang Ecu Extension Harness w/ SAFC harness - SOLD

I was able to cancel the clutch/flywheel order since it was through a friends shop. the Intercooler and piping Im still in the process of cancelling. If I am not able to get out of the order then I will ofcourse post it. Im paypal verified and always ship UPS insured.

magnamx-5 10-27-2006 09:39 AM

im not trying to do any of the such just stating what is doable. the small 16g starts going down hill in flow past 16 psi at 530 or so cfm so at that point it would be economical to go with a evo3 as it gives me more cfm of flow per given pressure ratio. 2.5 inch exhaust is plenty for 300 or so hp. the runners onthe megan racing are about 1.25-1.125 inches wide each not to bad. the reason i made the comparison in the first place is that it looks like the manifold with abit more pipe between the runners and turbine flange. I wish you the best of luck on the sales and hope you get however much you need out of it. good luck

DSM 450cc Injectors, SX Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator, 1g DSM BOV, Boomslang Harness - SOLD!

95Talispe 10-30-2006 07:51 AM

I lowered the asking price on the evo3 16g.

Side note - I guess with me posting this thread it made a local come out of hiding. He apparently just reads this board but hes quite new to tuning and came over to my house sunday. Tuned his safc with my wideband and I must say these cars are quite a bit to handle when boost comes on. I must be spoiled with my AWD:skid:
