16g questions

well im picking up a 16g from a 03 evo 8 and i have a few questions about it.
1 is how i can adjust the stock wastegate from 12psi down to 5 psi so i can up from that point as soon as other mods support it.
and 2 was to anyone that has it if they ran into any quirks they could let me know about
thanks

1) buy a new wastegate actuator.
2) No ideer.

Dange 09-25-2006 02:53 AM

does anyone know if this will work on a 16g?

It should work. You'll have to fab a bracket up though.

i just used a spring and eye hook attached tothe wg actuator by a clamp. I could adjust the WG level by pretensioning the spring. i suspect this hads an adverse affect on my WG as it doesnt seem to like to hold at high psi now though. i used a peice of 1/8th inch steel to make the bracket to hold the eye hook and a couple of nuts on the threads to hold the hook in position.

i dont know if an evo 8 can run on a standard 16g manifold they are supposed to be twin scroll the evo3 will work. match up the manifold profiles before you get to crazy. This will save you alot of headache.

Dange 09-25-2006 01:03 PM

yeah there are a couple "big" 16g evo III turbos around... so i should grab that one instead?

turbored 09-25-2006 01:10 PM

big 16Gs have the same flanges as a 14B turbo found on a DSM, as well as the T25 found on the latter DSMs.

I don't think the evo8 turbo would work. The orientation of the turbo is opposite to that of the DSM turbos.

Here are some pictures I found quickly showing the difference between the two. On top of that, no one makes a manifold for the evo 8 turbo. It would a custom fabbed deal. (You probably already know this, but the evo8 is twin scroll).

Sorry bro. Another thing to think about is that if you buy the turbo first, you have just decided what manifold you're going to have to buy also.

I would decide which direction you want to go with the build. If you go cheap like me, you can use DSM specific turbos, but that means you must use the Megan stuff, which will eventually crack, who are we kidding.

Turbo choices are many. Manifold/Downpipe choices are limited. Look at the best mani. d/p combo you can afford, then see which style turbo fits that application. Best way to start.

Are you rockin the 1.6?

As far as the 16G variants go, the small 16G is the most efficient at lower boost levels. I'm not calling the big or evo3 16Gs inefficient, but the reason for going to a big 16G or evo3 is to produce higher levels of boost, at slightly lower efficiency.

Now, if you have a good intercooler this could all be moot. Also, finding a cheap, lightly used 16G variant, no matter which, could make your decision for you.

well my plan is to pick up the megan racing mani+downpipe. i was going to have my friend weld up a few braces to prevent the cracking

i did a search on ebay and the 16g thats ported and clipped surpriingly comes out at a pretty good price around 300 for brand new...

Sounds good then! The 16G is a good turbo.

nester 09-25-2006 10:34 PM

300 brand new for a 16g? I can't even get a GT 16g for that price, at wholesale.

magnamx-5 09-26-2006 12:50 AM

make sure it is an evo 3 or small the large wont flow as well as these two in -15psi boost levels just something to think about. I like my megan racing setup for the money it is hard ot beat. Hey Nester when are we going to have a KY dyno day? Or at least me dyno day.

nester 09-26-2006 09:04 AM

small 16g's and big 16g's are the same price..

I just want to make sure he's not buying a SS Autochrome / XS Power 16g.

nester 09-26-2006 09:06 AM

PS, best way to adjust down to 5psi is to install an external gate. Then you can clock the turbo anyway you want. ;) Have the flapper welded shut, and I have mitsu downpipe flanges with no internal wastegate hole cut..

Dyno day, I'm not sure. There's some guys on 502streetscene.net who are organizing a dyno day for $50 a person..

my granpa died on friday and i didnt feel like driving 500-600 miles to VA there is a difference in the big 16g and the evo3 if i am not mistaken th evo has better wheels on it. hence the 620 cfm at 14.7psi evo3 vs the 505 cfm big 16g or 520cfm small 16g. ill ave ot give street scene a look.

Evo3 flows more than a big 16G, which flows more than a small 16G. I wouldn't call any of the three "better" than the others. It depends on your car/mods/boost. The Evo3 certainly has the ability to flow the most.

Why run a larger turbo than you need? Ultimately, there's not really enough difference at Miata boost levels to matter. Get whatever one you get a good deal on.

peak efficiencies for some MHT turbos: (for whatever that's worth)

14B is 76%
Small 16G = 77%
Big 16G = 71%
Evo3 = I couldn't find it!! (why am I posting?)

magnamx-5 09-26-2006 01:16 PM

that is what i was getting at for sub 15 psi setups the small does great but th evo 3 is better and the big isn't as good as the small until you hit 16-17 psi. I track what your saying though. here is a site with flow charts and other good facts on mitsu turbos http://www.stealth316.com/2-turboguide.htm
