is 18 or 20psi safe??

i just dropped my car off at rpm to have them tune my link and install 550s and i told them to set it up for 18psi... is that safe?? they are the best tuning shop on the east coast so they should be able to make it perfect...
i am running 305s at 15psi right now and its not fast enough.. i hope that 18psi with a good tune and my big 16g back on will make more power...
thx

Braineack 05-08-2007 02:38 PM

i wouldn't push more than that...

however, I'm questioning how safe it was to run 305s past 170rwhp at 50psi of fuel...was an FMU invovled?

jasono718 05-08-2007 02:53 PM

yeah.. its not safe... lots of detonation.. just rebuilt the motor... didnt take it to 15psi that much, maybe two or three times... i hope that 18psi is enough... i think that it should be fine with the forged rods, wiesco pistons, cometic head gasket and apr main studs i just put in...
thx

vortec fmu

Braineack 05-08-2007 02:57 PM

oh....then that's nothing.

The built bottom end should make it safe. What kind of boost was Andy running with out any engine managment?

jwarriner 05-08-2007 02:59 PM

All the Mitsu 'G' wheels really shine beyond 20psi.

Lex 05-08-2007 03:06 PM

with a built bottom end it should be good for 25psi + and past that the motor will start having flow issues and more work has to go in

m2cupcar 05-08-2007 03:40 PM

18psi was Afloyd's high power run. Keep in mind if you're having it tuned to from a "coarse" tune, you should get more power for your boost level anyway.

magnamx-5 05-08-2007 05:09 PM

for real jason. how many hp are you looking to make 330 or so?

jasono718 05-08-2007 05:33 PM

that sounds pretty good to me....

xcsx 05-08-2007 05:42 PM

I run the GReddy at 18psi all day long with no detonation. I have 440cc injectors tuned with the Link.

Granted, I do have a built motor but I have had no issues with my setup so far.

That turbo is good enough for 18psi to redline?

jasono718 05-08-2007 05:48 PM

how much power are you making???

Yep. I've never had a problem with it. I can bounce it off the rev limiter and the boost gauge holds 18psi for as long as I want it to (but of course I don't)

I wish I knew. I haven't had a chance to dyno yet. It'll be this season, I'd like to know myself.

Braineack 05-08-2007 06:02 PM

Probably something in the 275rwhp range...about the most you can ask from it.

xcsx 05-08-2007 06:11 PM

That's what I was thinking. I really wouldn't want more than that in all honesty. The car is pretty undriveable in hard rain, despite my compromising choices for street tires.

It's also a pig on gas and tires. ~12mpg on 93 octane and I had the belts coming through a set of RT615s in ~1300 miles. :sadwavey:

I still love it though. :)

jasono718 05-08-2007 09:08 PM

you get less than 12mpg with the link ???
is that just under boost or all the time???
thx

Braineack 05-08-2007 09:18 PM

I assume his driving habits are to blame ;) I was still making 27mpg at 200rwhp, i expect the same at 250.

turbopezz 05-08-2007 09:29 PM

i have a link,run 93 octane and get a whoping 12-15mpg.

magnamx-5 05-08-2007 09:30 PM

yes gas milage is all in how hard you drive or brake etc dont waste all that precius fuel and momentum guys keep the speed up and figure out a way to handle the turns with out binders :gay: i got anywhere from 22-30 mpg at 12 psi depending on my driving habits, i esstimated aroung 240-250 whp with that setup.

fmowry 05-09-2007 07:35 AM

Why would you build a motor and only run 305s, even with an AFPR? No ECU?

Frank

Braineack 05-09-2007 08:49 AM

even with an ECU; raising the fuel pressure = larger injectors

305cc injectors @ 100psi = 420cc injectors = 220rwhp

I thought about doing it. It's done with the EMB all the time. The "ECU" has no way of knowing (unless you tell it) that there is more pressure, so if you just tune your maps like there is no FMU, then you can support lots of HP with a perfectly controlled AFR.
