1987 Mercedes diesel turbo?
Local pull apart has one i can get for 50 bucks. I searched the list of usable junk yard turbos and this one is on the list but the list says(Calf). It has an external wastegate. This is my first turbo build and I'm wanting to stay under 1500. Should I get this turbo and rebuild it or keep looking. I definitely want an external waste.

Not trying to be offensive but If you have to ask those questions you may not be ready to turbo your own vehicle yet. Also junkyard turbos (besides the common t-25/sr20 line) require lots of custom fab work that if you can't do yourself is going to cost you lots in the end.

Why does asking that question make you think I shouldn't? What would be the standard question for someone that is gathering parts for a turbo?

Let me say I have a high skill level in fabrication but this is my first turbo build. So back to my original question.

I have ordered an MS3. I just want to know if the 50 dollar turbo after a rebuild is a viable option or just get a new one.

I'd still go with no. You can get a 2554r (or 2560r) for $250-$300. They spool well with our engine and makes good power until you decide to go towards the engine building route.

Thanks man. That's what I was looking for a simple explanation. Thanks for not assuming. This is my first build using FI. I'm 43 years old and have to many builds. I have always messed with old stuff. I got tired of carbs and motorcycle so I bought a 91 miata. Not looking to make a monster just a reliable fun car. I'm going to do it myself. That's the point. |
Just as a question if you ask for information and are told not to use that turbo how come you try to argue using that turbo, have you done your research on other people running the turbo on Miatas?

As a broad generalization, the actual turbocharger itself is one of the least expensive parts of a comprehensive turbo build.
So simply ask the question: "Is this specific turbo the one that I want to base my whole build around?" |

I could get it for 50 bucks so I was just wondering if it was a good deal at that price. It was listed on the junkyard turbo list I got off this site. Thanks |
If you have the skills to weld your own manifold and downpipe, then by all means use any obscure turbo your heart desires.
if you want an off the shelf manifold and dp setup that you can simply bolt on to your engine and enjoy life, then no, dont use that turbo. I would personally recommend go with a 2554 or 2560 Garrett. Or a sr20det t25 or t28 turbo. These are good performers and super common. why must you have an external Wastegate on a stock 1.6? I zero reason to use an ewg turbo. Unless you want the threw the hood dump pipe tractor look. |
