1994 Protege

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and mazdas in general so I need some help. I just bought a 1994 Protege with the 1.8BP DOHC engine. The guy before me owned it since 2009 and while he owned it he did a lot of mods to it. As it's running now it has a holset HX35 turbo, GTR intake manifold, gasket matched with cylinder head, 550cc RX-7 red top injectors, 3 inch down pipe, and H-beam rods. Running mega squirt DIY for ECU. There was no pcv valve or breather filter on the valve cover when I bought it and i haven't gotten one in there yet but there is oil coming from the pcv valve hole. It's not like spraying out but it leaves some under the hood after driving it for awhile. I tried plugging the hole for now but the turbo begins to smoke badly when I do that so I suspect that it pressurizes the crankcase and the turbo can't drain well enough then. So it's just open for now. But I figure the oil coming out has to be from too much oil under the valve cover so it spits it out when it gets to the baffle. So I looked to see if the drain holes in the head were clogged and three of them only seem to line up halfway or so with the holes on the block? Could this be causing too much oil to stay in the heads and blow out the pcv valve? Or should I be looking more into possibly piston rings? Block was supposedly rebuilt not long ago when the H-beams were put in after he bent the stock ones. If you have any questions for me please ask and I'm sure I'll have some more to ask you too. Thanks everyone!

There are two ventilation hoses to the valve cover (which then leads down to the crankcase). If you have one of them plugged and the other connected, chances are you are blowing boost air into the crankcase with nowhere for it to go, with predictable results. Probably nothing wrong with rings or anything like that, just pressure in the wrong place.

The valve cover on the FWD engine is slightly different than on the Miata (the inlet is on the "flywheel side" on the short edge), but everything else should be equivalent with regards to PCV and catch cans and those kinds of things.

Hey guys thanks for the replys. Put a pcv valve in and that just made the turbo burn oil like crazy again? Pulled the head off to check the head gasket and rings and both were good. Pretty stumped as to why it's burning so much oil with the pcv system hooked up? Also when I pulled the head I noticed two different types of injectors in the car, 2 red tops and 2 purple tops. There was a noticeable difference in the cylinders between injectors so I know they must not be the same. Can anyone tell me what they could be? Thanks

Leave the PCV valve out and instead run a hose to a catch can with a breather from that hole and it will likely be just fine.

Post a picture of what everything looks like now. I don't need to see the fenders, get us close enough where we can see where things are routed.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1460859644Sorry this is the only pic I took of the engine before I pulled the head off today. Hopefully it's good enough for you to see what you need too. The pcv valve port in the valve cover is just open and the port it attaches to on the intake is closed off with a bolt in the hose.

When FWD is lyfe.

This is my 323 (like your protege, but 2 door). Yes, it's a freakin' mess; it's as how I got it from the PO, and I'm cleaning it up now. This was running a 200-shot. :giggle:

Two hoses to a catch can with a breather should work well.

Ok sweet so I need to run both ports off of the valve cover into a catch can? Can anybody help with the injector problem? I'm having my cousin get 4 new red top injectors from a Mazda b2600 on his trip to the u pull today. Does anybody know will these work or are they low impedance? I've tried googling but I can't even get the flow rate just that they are red tops. Thanks for all the help guys really need to get this car running well soon

Ok guys found a catch can in the boxes of parts that came with the car so I'm gonna go ahead and hook that up when I get the head back on. I'll use the catch can thread and post any questions if I have them. But these injectors have me pretty worried. The purple tops were in cylinders 2, & 3 and the red tops were in 1, &4. The red tops are supposed to be 460cc injectors from a NA RX7 and the purples are supposed to be 550cc injectors from a turbo RX7. I think maybe the guy that owned it before me grabbed them at a junkyard or something and maybe they are bigger and smaller for primary and secondary on the RX7? The cylinders didn't seem to support the theory that the purples were bigger though as the cylinders those were in seemed to be very lean compared to the cylinders that the red tops were in. The spark plugs in the red cylinders looked good and had a nice color to them (maybe a tad on the black side) while the spark plugs from the purple top cylinders looked clean with almost no color on them which means lean correct? I guess I'm just not sure what's all up with these injectors and would like to get this beast back on the road asap. There is a guy semi local to me with a set of 4 S4 T2 injectors which is what I believe the purple tops are supposed to be. Only wants like 80 bucks for them so I'm almost inclined to go pick them up just to have them. Let me know what you all think thanks for all the help guys
