2560 actuator question

I have a used begi system with mspnp1, etc going in one of these days into my 96.

I noticed the previous owner of the turbo kit has the uprated 11-15psi actuator on the turbo. Wondering if I should get a lower rated actuator (7psi), or just man up, and tune on the heavier spring? Am I being paranoid?

Pretty good question.

It really depends on a bunch of other components.

Most importantly, do you have the fueling parts to support 11+psi of boost from this particular turbo? If you have stock injectors, the answer is probably no. You will be flowing enough air from a 2560 at 11psi to be running lean under boost and that's not good.

Secondarily, 11+psi from a 2560 will burn up a stock clutch a lot faster than 7psi will.

Personally, if/when I get my setup built I will be running a lot more than 7psi out of it because the power gains are large relative to the cost gains. You already spent the cash, you may as well spend a bit more and enjoy it properly. Meaning, get injectors that will have some headroom for your setup and a decent clutch.

For now, if you are on stock injectors and all, a 7psi actuator is a good idea.

If you have a stock bottom I say fuck that noise get like a 4-8psi spring and use ebc to get it to your desired level. On a 2560 I wouldnt go over 12psi on stock bottom. My current setup is 10.5-11psi and its solid. That is with a good tune too. Your gonna want to go slow and start low with boost and tune your setup really well and then adjust VE as you increase boost through CL.

I've tuned NA8's to 14-15psi on a 2560 no problem.
You should probably still get the lower pressure one though, and use an mbc or ebc to bump it back up to desired level so you don't miss out on the lowend/midrange torque onset

Thanks for the replies. For completeness: I have rx-8 yellow injectors and a new ACT HD in place already. I think I will keep my eye out for a 7psi actuator and then MBC or EBC up as needed.

I'll ask in the classifieds section of this forum.

I'll have an HKS adjustable actuator for sale shortly, if interested?

Not 100% sure if the ms1 has ebc but you can use a lower 7 psi wastegate actuator and use the electronic boost solenoid to set your boost level to anything greater than that. I have a couple maps that I can switch to for 8psi, 10 psi and 13 psi by just loading a different map to the ECU.

A manual boost controller is another option.
