Which 2871 does Savington have?

Which GT2871?

There are 3 trim options for the compressor, and at least 2 turbines and 2 a/rs:

neogenesis2004 04-09-2010 01:34 PM

You can usually tell from the compressor housing. There is only 1 turbine option and 2 compressor options. Not sure where you see different turbines in there...

aznDragonX 04-09-2010 01:37 PM

how funny..I was just searching for that too. Jason, where are you going to get your GT2871R from?

Savington 04-09-2010 01:38 PM

52trim, T25 .86 A/R.

aznDragonX 04-09-2010 01:40 PM

I found this from Sav's post.
https://www.miataturbo.net/showpost....7&postcount=91

neogenesis2004 04-09-2010 01:40 PM

Scratch that, there are 3 wheels. Still only seeing 1 turbine though...

Savington 04-09-2010 01:42 PM

Neo, I think you can get it with a T3 housing in .63 or .82. Too lazy to actually check, though. :p

Your turbine housing is too big. I have a .86 and it hits target boost at 3200rpm. I should have gone with a 2554.

shlammed 04-09-2010 01:46 PM

Big A/R is magical.
i also have 0.86 and it works well. boost hits like a wall

Haha...naw dude, you need an IHI in your life.

Turbine so small I couldn't stick my peter in it.

correct. BRGRacer has a .48 A/R T3 housing on his 2871.

neogenesis2004 04-09-2010 02:15 PM

Still the same turbine though.... So I'm win.

infinitesimally small.

You should have gone with VVT. watch that 3200 rpm number get smaller when he gets his isht on a dyno.

this statement is kinda funny.

raise your hand if you think "boost hits like a wall" is a good thing...

I'd love to see a test of how comparable the .48 T3 is to the .64 T25, and the .63 T3 to the .86 T25.

I think that's the exact term I used when I found out my boost protection was set at 1.5psi after the install...

sorry. ive been saying that for a while.

it comes on like its just nothing, and then your at peak boost. (inverse of hitting a wall)

Hustler, your pic is here.

Its the setup that Splitime had for sale... i dont have any better pics of my manifold off hand... i have dialup at the shop :(

Oh, i also have just got it running and it needs alot of work to be tidy.

Tom went with that housing because he figured the larger inlet of the T3 housing would be better, but wanted to stick with the smaller T3 .48 A/R size for his low CR 1.6L. But I've heard the are pretty much identical as far as teh ratio is concerned.

Braineack 04-09-2010 07:28 PM

shlammed, where's your intake filter, in the tire well? pics of this now pleeeeze.

miatauser884 04-09-2010 07:50 PM

Damn, I thought .64 A/R was where it's at. Damn, I should have got the .8 A/R.

Maybe...I was fine with hitting target boost at 4400rpm before, but with the AF mainfold it makes that pressure 1200rpm earlier.

Braineack 04-09-2010 08:35 PM

wow, that's an insane difference in flow!

shlammed 04-09-2010 10:14 PM

they are always up anyways, so it doesnt matter lol.

webby459 04-09-2010 10:41 PM

shlammage, 440s might be marginal for you.

shlammed 04-09-2010 11:35 PM

:S
i was thinking that too.
i NEED to convert my 92 over to sequential or im 100% going to run out of injector. what about fuel pumps... when do the stock ones tend to die? the FAQ just says PSI not horsepower they support

i have a dyno tune day setup for the first of the month too.

Sorry for de-railing this thread...
i will start a build thread shortly.

webby459 04-10-2010 08:41 AM

I don't think doing sequential gives you any more head room.

Fuel pump, guys use the stock one to 300 wheel plus on gas. I would think if you are above that, you've got serious money in your motor, a new pump is very cheap insurance considering the age of our stockers.

There are 3 compressor trims 48, 52 (Sav's) and 56.

The 48 appears to be a nice size for a 15 psi street setup:
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...47-1comp_e.jpg

52 trim:
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...0-15comp_e.jpg

Note that the 48 trim's max efficiency point is closer to the miata's peak torque in a 15 psi setup which would be around 250 hp / 25 lbs/min.

The 52 trim would be better for a track setup because the max effciency point is closer to the powerband peak (~280-320 hp)

The GT2860RS may be better at lower boost because its max efficiency point is closer to 10-12 psi and is probably better at spoolup at lower RPm because it's more efficient in the 5-10 psi range and lower flows:

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...48-1comp_e.jpg

There is a small trim GTxx60 - 55 trim which would be good for a lower power setup:
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...60-7comp_e.jpg

which is pretty close to the GT2560
