323 GTX/Capri XR2 Manifold (not the normal Q)
 

Hey so question

I know the turbo itself wont work due to opposite direction, but is the manifold flange symmetrical? as in could I just flip the turbo around or use another (what flange is on the manifold?) turbo that would fit?

Theres an xr2 at the jyard and idk if I should pick it up for kicks n gigs. Also are the injectors any good?

Nope, turbo hit block.

Wouldn't be able to flip the manifold upside down if that's what your asking. And the turbo would fit fine on the correct manifold, but a 323 manifold can't work on miata because the turbo flange is way to close to the block.

not flipping the manifold, but using the manifold with a turbo pointing in the opposite direction, if that makes sense.

Like Luke said, the 323 manifold places the turbo flange very close to the block. If you tried to mount the turbo to point the other way, the snail would hit the block.

Makes me wonder though, do turbos generally only exist in one 'orientation'? Would make sense to have left and right-handed versions to have a 'symmetrical' setup on v6 or v8 cars.

Well that's what I was talking about in the rest of my post. Unless you have the turbo on backwards from normal miatas, exit exhaust out the hood, and run charge piping all the way around its not going to happen

thanks for the clear and quick reply. IDK it depends on the application, some are probably clockwise dependent, while others could be counterclockwise like you said.

heres a picture of CW and CCW turbos, so its a thing at least aftermarket wise. Thats the reason i brought up using the xr2 manifold. Search around a bit for a CCW turbo that would fit, and make it oem ish.

The oem flange is ihi not t25 or t3 so only oem turbos fit it.

Only way I can see this working is to make an adapter with two flanges and with a ninety degree pipe bend inbetween.

If you can fabricate all that yourself, its probably the only way you can still use the original manifold.

If it was me, I would sell that front wheel drive manifold, and buy an exhaust manifold that is miata friendly.
