3In exhaust with Magnaflow 22' muffler, Sound quality/DB level?

Hey guys,

Got my exhaust made for my car. Used 3" ss pipe from the Downpipe back, downpipe is a beautiful artech SGDP. I've got 3 vbands on it, 2 at the cat 1 at the rear. No resonator, using the 5x11x22 in magnaflow muffler :brain: used.

I've got a bit of a noise issue with it. Its not to terribly loud at cruise, but I took it to redline the other day and I'm surprised I'm not perma-deaf.

I'm thinking I've got a leak at one of the multiple vband clamp bastard things. but maybe 3ins is just too loud for me. So i'm checking with other people to see if their similar setup is fairly loud, or no.

My turbo/manifold/downpipe is all pretty secure. its an FMII w/gt3071. I've got gaskets and sealant at all the connections, rene-41 hardware and such. Doesn't stretch, and its all verified tight. also, the majority of the sound is from the rear of the car anyway.

Thanks,
Nick

Full 3" mandrel stainless with a single 4x9x14 Magnaflow oval here. It's WAY quieter then I ever thought it would be. I wouldn't say it would make me perma-deaf. Totally bearable even GF approved... Although bigger turbo on your car may have somthing to do with it....

I don't think the larger turbo would make more noise really. its not too much bigger than a 2871. I dunno. Honestly it doesn't look like it impedes flow much less than a smaller one. Still a big fan blade in the way, still an imediate ninety... should muffle sound good.

Pretty sure I have exhaust leaking from every orfice of my exhaust system. God damnit.

Sure is nice its -13* out so I cna go outside and work on my car on the ground in a tshirt.

You shouldn't have an dB complaints with a 5x11x22... you're doing it wrong.

Sokool 02-02-2011 03:02 PM

Kinda my thoughts as well....

Having dealt with exhaust leaks from every possible orifice, I say this

If it is smoov and bassy, that is just the sound of the exhaust

If you hear nasally higher pitched raspy shit, you have a leak

If when boosting you hear the sound of air wooshing other than normal compressor intake sounds (my 3071 woosh is LOUDD and i like!) then you have a leak

This. Sav's car with that (and no cat) is something like 87db at Seca.

My car with a Magnaflow, no cat 400+ whp. 3" all the way back...not sure of the exact specs of the muffler but I will dig them up if you're really interested.

Damn. Ok, Ok. I fucked up. I'm betting I know what happened.
1. Suck at welding
2. spatter on vbands = no seal
3. fuck.

I guess I'll either try using a gasket on those affected vbands, or weld it straight at those points. Should be fun for removal.

there's that, or just have Abe do it for me. I work too much for this crap. blah.

Really, the 22in muffler is that chill? I miss my stock MSM crap, it wasn't half bad with no resonator/fm downpipe. Long behind me at this point....

Just take a whiz wheel to the spatter... and make sure that you don't have any holes in your welds.

Good idea with the wheel. I guess all I had was cutting wheels but no sanding disks. I'll get some for my grinder and pull it all out next week or so and fix it. hopefully.

Yup. I always take a wheel to my vbands. They warp a bit after welding.

Faeflora 02-03-2011 08:58 AM

What is a whiz wheel?

flap wheel / flexible abrasive for your angle grinder.

so splatter is why I dont use flux core anymore. get some damn shielding gas!

The ones I think of are for air die grinders. It's like a little sanding disc that twist locks into the fitting. But a flap wheel on an angle grinder will do the same thing.

And if you stitch weld it, alternating areas the v-band won't warp.

wittyworks 02-03-2011 11:14 AM

Or you can just wire wheel the splatter off and file the v bands so they become flat again....
