how do you guys feel about the 2.5" cxracing downpipe with a v-band clamp (it looks good and has a good price tag)?

Not good. It'll line up with one of their tinfoil manifolds and that's about it. If you're getting a cast mani (as you should) it wont line up. I'd strongly recommend a custom v-band downpipe.

Has anyone out there mounted the wideband sensor or other gauges in the faceplate under/above the radio to keep better visibility around the pillar gauges?

Plenty of people. You can use the air vents or make a blank plate below the radio.

Any other smart suggestions for first timers taking the plunge and praying to themselves that they wont screw this all up?

Do research. Do Research and then when you're sick of looking at forum posts... do it just a little bit more.
This will answer most, if not all of your questions and will alleviate a lot of issues from popping up during the conversion.

  1. Stop looking at CXRacing parts.
  2. Read all the stickies in every subforum.
  3. If you have a question, type "site:miataturbo.net __________" into Google with keywords in the blank and read about the topic. You will typically find the answer to most questions without having to ask them yourself.
  4. Read through popular build threads. If you have questions, repeat step 3
  5. If you see the same screen names giving good advice over and over again, look through the threads they have started, find their build threads or other popular threads, and read them. If you have questions, repeat step 3

GUYS!!! Has anyone ever turbocharged a Miata? Is it possible?

:giggle:

Babychurbo18 02-14-2017 03:16 PM

Alright, so I will be going with a cast mani so I will stay away from the Cxracing downpipe. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get one custom made. If I do it before the build then I wont have the dimensions but if I do it after the build then I wont be able to drive to a shop to get one custom made to fit. How do you guys go about getting a custom one made that'll fit perfectly with an immobile car? What can I expect to pay or what are you guys paying on average to have a basic 2.5" mild steel downpipe fabbed up?

18psi 02-14-2017 03:19 PM

you want a good deal, go talk Lars (shuiend) into building you a mkturbo setup. or go talk to sturovo about building you a Subaru flanged setup.

Better yet, pick up a cheap mig welder, some 2.5" pipe (even better 3"), some mandrel bends, and learn to do it yourself. You will be the envy of all your car friends

I actually have a Mig welder sitting in my garage I used to weld up a mid-pipe on my Subaru. It worked but didn't have the prettiest welds. Would this type of welder be fine to use to fab up the downpipe? Would i see much of a benefit using a 3" downpipe over a 2.5" or would I even see any benefit since I only have a 2.5" catback?

18psi 02-14-2017 08:38 PM

Yes

That's awesome! Haha. That about sums it up perfectly. So a flux core mig will do the job, I just have to clean up my welds I take it.

Or not care what it looks like.

My exact thoughts on my exhaust, cover the DP in heat wrap and the rest will barely ever be seen again

The bigger the glob, the better the job

Didn't know about sturovo. That's pretty cool!

I hate you.

This thread just became promising.

Won't heat wrap cause the downpipe to rust though?

Caverly 02-16-2017 11:27 PM

Depends on whether you use stainless or mild steel.
Did some googling for you:
Should I heat wrap my downpipe?
https://forum.miata.net/vb/archive/i...p/t-17463.html
VWVortex.com - Heat wrap the downpipe or don't heatwrap the downpipe?
Heat wrap down pipe....Good or bad idea??? - MR2 Owners Club Message Board

tl;dr: It's an opinion thing you won't really get a solid answer on, but nobody says anything bad about ceramic coating. Seeing as you're a city driver, I'm assuming you sit in traffic? Might want to bite the rust bullet and wrap it anyways.

Okay thank you for that, but yeah it does seem like a matter of opinion. I think I will do the heat wrap then to keep the heat down in the cabin. What are your thoughts on turbo heat shield blankets? Are those worth anything in regards to keeping temps down?

General thoughts from reading.

Heat shield = good (to protect brake MC and lines) & plenty of picture examples
Blankets = Bad (esp if journal bearing) no actual air convection.
